Left Singapore on March 23rd for a trip half way around the world - Oceania Cruise Line. We will be traveling for 109 days - yes that is a long time!

South America » Colombia » Cartagena July 4th 2015

It was a surprise to see all the high rises from the ship as we approached the harbor. We decided we would take a taxi on our own to the Old Town of Cartagena but at the last minute changed our minds and decided to take a tour that a friend had arranged. It was in the mid-nineties and very humid today but we were happy that we took the tour as it afforded us an opportunity to hear the history and see a few places we probably wouldn’t have. This actually was a very nice port and if we had more time, could have enjoyed it more. The heat however was oppressive. We just heard from the Captain that there are storms in the forecast and so a decision was made not to stop in ... read more

We are finished with Central America and for that I am grateful. In all fairness, there were excursions that went inland and that were probably wonderful and exciting but we have pretty much had it with tours. It has been a fabulous trip and we have done more than anyone can imagine and now we are ready for reality. Reality isn’t so bad - the lake is beckoning, the boat is beckoning, we miss our family and friends - only 2 more ports and then we reach Miami. We did our obligatory stroll off the pier and glanced toward the souvenirs and strolled back but not before taking a picture of the beach! Ugh! Yes we are definitely ready for home.... read more

Didn’t expect much and didn’t get much. We walked into the town which is adjacent to the port and were greeted by many who wanted to take us somewhere else. Since we weren’t interested, we just walked up the mains street and observed little shops that were inside dark entrances and chose not to explore those either. Turned around and headed back to the ship. End of visit to Nicaragua! Next stop Costa Rica - no plans there either but we will go out and see what there is.... read more

I am not going to lie, I predicted the last two weeks of this trip were not going to be our favorite stops and it is proving to be true with the exception of San Diego and Cabo San Lucas. Today’s port was super industrial although they had an attractive area at the pier for shopping. Many arts and crafts vendors were in residence and although I found their goods attractive, didn’t buy a thing. We have no room to bring anything else home so we will not be buying anything else from here on in. Saw some iguanas near the shore and other than that not much to do unless you travel 50 miles to see Antigua. The temperature today was in the nineties so we were happy to spend most of our time on ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Huatulco June 28th 2015

The ship arrived at 7:00 a.m. this morning but we didn’t rush to go out as we didn’t have a tour planned. When we finally went ashore we strolled around the shopping area adjacent to the pier and bought vanilla extract and beer. One had alcohol in it and the other did not. We met up with some friends from the ship who were swimming and all decided to go to a restaurant right on the beach and have some drinks. Three margaritas later (Jerry had beer, of course) we headed back to the ship (it was only 1:30p.m) because we were sailing at 2:00. I immediately headed for bed where I slept for 3 hours. As we prepared for dinner, I was still feeling those drinks. That was the first time I drank margaritas this ... read more

We arrived in Cabo at noon today while the sun was beating down. We decided that we would have lunch and wile away the time before heading out to explore the area. After a 10 minute tender ride to the pier, we walked a short way and were approached by a hawker for a water taxi so we decided to take it to go see the infamous “Arch.” The arch of Cabo San Lucas, is a distinctive rock formation at the southern tip of Cabo San Lucas, which is itself the extreme southern end of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. So happy we did that as it was extremely hot but was cooler on the water. The landscape was just beautiful with caves and stone formations that looked like a pig and a witch. We especially liked ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Diego June 23rd 2015

It was a delight to wake up in San Diego! Off the ship we went to the Ferry just a short jaunt away with friends Bob and Sandra. They wished to come along with us as we went on our excursion to take a look at the condo we will rent in January, 2016. Upon arrival on Coronado Island, a free shuttle was waiting to take us downtown leaving us off in front of City Hall. We then waited for a bus to take us to the Coronado Cays about 3 or 4 miles south of town. After a little walk we found the condo and took pictures and strolled the neighborhood a bit. We felt quite pleased at what we found - should be a great home for 3 months next year. Back on the ... read more

After 5 days at sea, it felt good to land our feet on terra ferma. Gene picked us up a little after nine and drove to Huntington Beach to pick up Nicia. She was having her condo prepared to be painted so we walked to town and the pier which was a short distance away. After a nice stroll we headed to Newport Beach to have some lunch. We then drove to Crystal Beach, which is a nice little State of California treasure. The cottages were once used by the Hollywood elite but after awhile were run down and abandoned. The State rents the cottages out with still more to renovate. It is a cozy little spot and we had a beer there too before heading back to drop off Nicia and then us at the ... read more

North America » United States » Hawaii » Kaua'i » Napali Coast June 16th 2015

We arrived at the airport and were very excited about our flight over the island of Kauai until we were told we had to be weighed in! Now we have been on a cruise for 88 days so I was nervous because the clothes are not fitting the way they did. Fortunately only the office person sees the results and after doing her calculations we were told that collectively we were fine. After a big sigh of relief we were on our way. What a thrill to see this most unusual and beautiful island from the air. There is a stretch of shoreline that can only be seen by air or boat and it was breathtaking. We flew for an hour and snapped photos like crazy as we oohed and aahed. Back on the ground, the ... read more

North America » United States » Hawaii » Maui » Lahaina June 15th 2015

We heard the island of Maui is beautiful but we weren’t on it long enough to determine that. As soon as we were tendered to the pier, we boarded a catamaran and sailed away to a snorkeling spot. Was lucky enough to spot three smaller turtles and get photos. As we were leaving that area, we noticed a very large turtle swimming by. We had lunch on the catamaran and spent leisurely time aboard. Upon our return to Lahaina, we walked into town and bought some T-shirts and then met some friends at the local bar. Took the last tender back to the boat at 4:30. Needless to say, we didn’t have much time to explore Maui. Maybe the next time…... read more
