We flew this day to San Jose from Tortuguero in a single engine Cessna. There is a very small landing strip across the river from Tortuga Lodge which brings a plane twice a day. The hotel staff came across with us to see us off in the rain. Our flight was very smooth, I think in large part due to the pilot's abilities as there was bad weather. We had a good look at San Jose from the air and we were met at the small airport by our guide Omar. We were all so pleased to be reunited with him (he is rather stoic so we could not tell what he thought of being reunited with us), it was like a homecoming. It was a short-lived reunion though as we drove through the city Omar's ... read more

I just returned from Volcan Arenal, and all I can say is that I hope every weekend trip is as good as or better than this one. We left San Jose at 6 in the morning and arrived at some random waterfalls a few hours later. We all hiked down the mountain until we arrived at the waterfalls. It was amazing! Of course, we took a lot of pictures and then went swimming in the water. It was very cold but we had a blast doing it. After that we ate lunch and then checked into our resort. Yes, a resort, not hotel. I was suprised that they put a bunch of study abroad students in such a nice place. The volcano was in plain view from the resort and it is one of the most ... read more

It is now half-way through the AFS Costa Rica program and we all know what that means! Mid-Stay Evaluation! Actually it was pretty cool to see all the other AFSers again after almost 3 months. The AFS staff talked to us as a group about our experiences and we even put together some small skits to illustrate some of the problems we had faced either with work or family (most of which are much better now). A little trip to Volcán Poás was included in the package as well (and this time the view was clear!). I'm looking forward to seeing everybody again come late July!... read more

Hola, hola!!!!

I decided to sign up for an organized tour for my first trip to Costa Rica (CR) because I wanted to see many areas in the country and experience nature. I chose the company Costa Rica Expeditions (CRE) because of their ecotours and they have a strong conservation philosophy and strategic lodges. I arrived late at night and had great support at the San Jose airport from CRE. There was a mass of people right at the airport exit and the CRE guide pushed me and my luggage right through. First night and last night I stayed at Parque del Lago in San Jose . CRE includes these nights in the tour and I’m not sure why this location is chosen. The hotel was okay and modern, although little things annoyed like the fact that the ... read more

Okay, so I arrived in San Jose yesterday and it is VERY hot and there is no air conditioning! The family I am staying with is very nice, Amalia and Gerardo are my "parents" and they have 2 daughters and 1 son, I think? One of the daughters Marla and her daughter who is 2 lives wiht us also. They are also hosting a German exchange student Johanna. She is very funny and speaks good English. She is obsessed with The O.C. and cannot wait until it comes on tonight. I feel like my Spanish has gotten better in the past day, so who knows what a month will do for my speaking skills. I woke up at 6 am to get ready for class.. eh! We had our placement exams today and soon we will ... read more

I decided to leave out Costa Rica on my Central America trip. I was hoping to get a visa from the US embassy in Managua and made an overnight bus journey to Nicaragua straight away. Which included a change of buses in San Jose, Costa Rica in the middle of the night. San Jose is said to be as dangerous in the night as all the other Central American cities. But fortunatelly a guy called 'Franco' guided me through the dark alleys from one bus station to the other in exchange for a small fee. This fee he would have undoubtedly extracted in a more unfriendly way would I not have been so willing to pay him for his service...... read more

We are now in San Jose, a place we've been on another trip here, and one of the better big cities here...however, our bad luck with hotels here has held out over the years....some of you have heard about our first night here five years ago, and last night was just as bad! We had made reservations for the sister hostel of the place we stayed and loved in La Fortuna..in the flyer the place looked great--a pool, garden, roof top restaurant....well, our room was similar to what I imagine a prison cell would be like, only prisioners are not subjected to really, really loud music until past 1am...along with the accompanying drunks...Also, our room had its only tiny window opening on the stairs up to bar, and the large hallway window (which didn't open) had ... read more

Hello again, I thought I´d wait until after my second trip to San Jose before I got around to writing it. Flying over the coast and jungle into Costa Rica seemed quite exciting, but San Jose turned out to be quite similar to most other small citiesm although it was full of people with exciting stories of adventures all around Central America.. In the few days before I went to Cuba, I wandered around the markets, a museum in an old fort, which included a butterfly house, another museum containing random artwork, some parks, a plaza, the National Theatre, and the zoo. Just as I got to the zoo it started pouring with rain, but luckily I had an umbrella. Suprisingly enough noone else was at the zoo, but most of the animals seemed to be ... read more
