We were pretty sad to leave the US of A after five busy weeks; what an amazing place, well continentally sized place, to travel around; in particular in a Ford open-top Mustang. So many options, so many landscapes and so much to do. And although from time to time the hospitality folks get on your wick, it's generally tops for service and easy-going, chatty people who want to know all about you. A bit like Oldham :-) So after the most ridiculous fiasco in the world regarding actually getting our ticket from Los Angeles sorted out with TACA (they lost it, at least twice), we arrived somewhat rueful, on 7th November in rain-deluged San Jose, ugly capital of CR (what is it about Latin America that generally, you are advised to avoid the capital cities? Seems ... read more

Hola, I have just returned from one of the most incredible places on earth...Punta Mona. Last monday we loaded in a van and drove five hours across Costa Rica to the Caribbean cost. At last, I caught a glimpse of the ocean. Memories of my past summer in Martha´s Vineyard came flooding back and I felt at home. Standing in the sand, I knew the week ahead was going to be incredible. We were going to spend a week at Punta Mona, a Organic Perma-Culture farm deep in the jungle. To get there, we had to hike four hours. Let me tell you, I am no hiker. I LOVED this hike. It was less of the walking and more of the observation of sloths, howler monkeys, bats, golden orb spiders, caves, islands, tucans, iguanas, and eyelash ... read more

Today we explored the wonderful district of Barrio Amon. The streets are extremely crowded with pedestrians and crazy people driving car, busses and motorcycles. We had breakfast at a tiny cafe just down the street. Later we went to the national museum of costa rica where there was a cool butterfly garden. The streets are really narrow and very smoggy. We kind of took it easy and got aquainted with the area. Tonight we plan to drink some guero and imperial cerveza. It is almost happy hour and time to party it up at the hostel. We are very eager to learn spanish, we feel stupid here. adios. ... read more

We left Nathan Dees, the Texas schizo guitar legend and eventually made it to Playa Dominical. We managed to get there without getting robbed at the bus stop this time and found a really cool place to stay right on the beach. Pete bartered with the guy at the hostel (local guy called Junior) and we got a double room with en suite for the same price as a dorm. We were actually right on the beach and i could check the surf from in my bed. When we got there the surf wasn´t that great, about chest to head high but a bit messy. It was however, much better than jaco, so we got straight in. It turned out to be quite a heavy wave, and the beach had really strong rip currents. I caught ... read more

After years of travel plans in the making...I´ve finally landed in my first of many destinations...San Jose, Costa Rica. You may think of lush jungles and beautiful beaches when you think of Costa Rica, but San Jose is far from it. Here it´s big, smoggy, busy, crowded, and basically downright disgusting. My flight was good, save the two crazy old women beside me who kept arguing that Costa Rica was an island (they´re gonna get hella lost). I landed, found my shuttle, and was swept into the chaos of San Jose to my hostel, which turns out to be in a pretty run down part of town (at least it´s 4 blocks from downtown)...I guess this is why it´s only costing me $8 a night. Anyways, I´ll be outta here in the morning, heading to Jaco ... read more

J.P. ... read more
