30 Julio 2006 ¡¡Hola, hoooola!!

Mike and I arrived in Costa Rica on July 27th, tired from all the running around we did in the States during our last two weeks there but very ready to begin our new adventure. Our flight was due to leave Philadelphia at 6:30am which meant a very early wake up call at 3:30! Thankfully my folks drove us to the airport and saved us a costly cab ride. Once again, the airlines tell you to be 2 hours early for your flight, yet the lines are not even open at this time so we waited patiently, still half asleep until the US Air group arrived and opened up for ticketing. This time, we knew better than to pack our “extra” belongings in cardboard boxes so instead we had 2 very large roller bags, 1 large ... read more

The rafting company picked us up at 8am to head out and white-water raft down the Gerviche river. There were two rafts, and one of the guides spoke some english. The river was great fun - mostly class 2 and 3 rapids. I fell out into the river 4 times, only one of which was intentional. After rafting we got dropped off on the Carrera Interamericana (the main highway through central america) and we caught a bus to Paso Canoas on the Costa Rican border. Once we got there, there was a 15 year old who decided to guide us through the process and chat up Trish at the same time. There obviously aren't many NZers coming through the border crossing, as they had to ask around whether or not I was allowed in... From there ... read more

So here we are safe and sound in San Jose, Costa Rica. We´ve made it all the way through five countries in the last six weeks with only the odd dose of ´Montezumas Revenge´to have troubled us! So we finally left our tour last week and had the last eight days to explore Costa Rica for ourselves. It was a bit of a relief to finish to be honest as we have been itching to travel at our own pace, eat when we want to etc. etc. So last Friday we set off for La Fortuna, a small town that sits under the shadow of Volcan Arenal, the 3rd most active volcano in the world. For both of us, this part of Central America was the real pinnacle of our trip during our planning stage. We´d ... read more

We had a flight booked to head out to Tortuguero at 5:45am, which meant being at the airport at 5am, which meant getting a taxi at 4:30am, which meant getting up at 4:15am - hooray! We had decided to stay another day in San Jose to try and get my camera repaired, since I didn't want to lug it around if it was no use. We tried calling the airline to see if we could change the ticket but had no luck, so we just caught the taxi out to the airport anyway to change the flight if we could, or, catch the flight if the ticket could not be changed. Fortunately the flight was easily changed and we headed back to the hotel, checked back in and went back to bed! We got up later ... read more

We had a delightful series of flights to Costa Rica, with a flight to San Francisco, a 3 hour stopover, a midnight flight to Houston, another 3 hour stopover, and then a flight to San Jose at about 6am. It was great to arrive in the humidity and heat of Costa Rica's captial, San Jose - a nice change from the dryness of Calgary! We caught a taxi into town and checked into the Colonial Hotel. We had a full day of exploring the city, which was a lot nicer than we expected. The town was a mixture of really run-down places and some old colonial buildings that were still kept in good shape. On our first trip out we got caught in one of those tropical downpours and bought some small umbrellas from one of ... read more

It was finally time to leave and and good chums Stef and Ang dropped us off at the airport at about 5pm. While waiting at the gate to fly out, I had a nasty surprise when I found out that after dropping my bag on the ground, my camera no longer worked! At least we still had Trishs camera that still took pictures but the LCD display on that was broken. Funny that I have managed to break 3 different digital cameras in the last 5 months... whats up with that... ... read more
