3 mai 2006 Oh là là! Mais comment ça passe vite quoi! Quel horreur !

ahhh the sweet smell of salt water. the loud sound of waves. the feeling of being so alive its almost feels numbing..... si si , yo soy a la playa de pacifico!!!! we reached destination Jaco (pronounced HAKO) on friday (the 28th...wow that was only yesterday...haha it feels like we've been here for so long!) morning. since then i've experienced the pacific ocean like never before! We found a comfy yet cheap hostel (9 USD a night) and booted it right down to the beach (literally 100 mts from the enterance to our hostel). The Caribbean was beautiful, but this...ahh but this...its surreal! The beach is huge, just goes on forever, and at either end of it are these gorgeous foothills with trees so green i smile just looking at them! I can't begin to desribe how ... read more

goodmorning folks!! due to my lack of money recently, i wasnt able to access internet while on the beautiful coast. it was a wicked 5 days though and now that im back in the busy city of san jose i realise just how gorgeous that blue Carribean coast water is!! Adam Rog and myself arrived in the rain on saturday afternoon. The quietness struck us as we unpacked at the hostel, missing the other 7 groups members that somehow dropped like flies before we left! The atmosphere and culture of Puerto Viejo was so different from the communities we had been living in for the last two months. Touristy, so colourful, had a breeeeeeze from the ocean, much more pricey, but the biggest difference was definetly the ethnicity of the people. It was really the Caribbean ... read more

We have gone out of our way to avoid the bigger cities (other than horrible Tegucigalpa in Honduras) but headed to the bussling San Jose to give it a chance. One night is more than enough! When we first arrived we were dropped off at a bus stop not to far from the hostel we were going to stay at and thought we would walk. After about 200m we felt so intimidated by the dirty roads, litter and homeless sleeping on boxes that we jumped in the nearest taxi! In hindsight it wasn't that bad....you know how it is: the bus stops are invariably on the dodgier ends of any town. I think after being in so many small coastal and colonial town, the city streets took us by surprise. We used the night to try ... read more

well... a bit sooner and a lot sorer than expected, I'm back in San Jose just for the day, and head off to Nicaragua mañana (as long as I can buy a ticket). I'm just returning from eating a great filling lunch at a vegitarian fast food chain of sorts, where a veggie soup, brown rice, veggie curry, salad, fruit drink, and ice cream, costed less then 4 bucks! Julie and Joel, you'd love it! So now, onto my recent adventure... Chirippó. Beautiful but not too kind on the body. I went up friday morning, leaving at 8 from the park headquarters. Had to walk 2 km before even reaching the trail, with a large backpack mind you, and was already a bit tired. And once on the trail I knew I was going to be ... read more

wholey smokes. what a 24 hours to document! (to understand this story you must know that we{re staying at a hostel in San Jose as a transition before we head to the beach) it began at 2am yesterday morning (friday the 21st) when i was awoke at 2am to Shannon anxiously telling me she was rushing Lauren to the hospital (both group members that stayed at on to travel longer). (!! irony in this being SHANNON has been in and out of hospital lately because she has 4 kidney stones that may need operation!! ) lauren had been having stomach pains all day and was up for the last two hours vomitting. Rog and I got up to see them off and then of course couldnt fall asleep. its incredible how motherly you feel to eachother ... read more

17 abril 2006 ¡Holaaa!

April 11, 2006 Hello everybody! How are you? It has been a while since I wrote the last mail in English, so I have to briefly update you. Some of you already know about my situation, but for the others…I am in Costa Rica! I was in France studying a master’s programme on sustainable development and tourism. A month ago, I left Grenoble in order to do an internship (after this I´ll be done with studies for a while) here in San José. I am working for the Costa Rican association for community-based ecotourism. My mission consists in doing the follow-up of a plan which aim is to improve the quality of tourism structures in terms of sustainability. 26 different lodges belong to ACTUAR, and they’ve all been created by local people. In Costa Rica there ... read more
