One of the joys of being in Costa Rica is the lack of internet, television, and other so-called necessities in many of the places we are staying. The internet has been spotty at best, so I have fallen behind on this blog. I will catch up the last few days with a couple of posts this morning. The second full day in La Fortuna (last Thursday) was taken up with hiking through the Arenas Volcano National Park. There were no swinging bridges, but we thought we would include a photo of one anyway since we forgot in the last posting. The park covers most of the volcano which last erupted in 2010. However, the last lava flow was in 1998 and that was what we were hiking out to see. On the way to the flow ... read more

As I write this we are in for the night and experiencing the rains you get when you are in the rain forest mountains of Costa Rica. For the past twenty minutes there has been a wall of water falling from the skys, it is so loud you cannot hear the river that runs past our cabin. But we missed the rain during the day and had some great adventures. The day started with breakfast, served by Felix, seeming known as Cinderella in the neighborhood. He comes by the name due to his ability to lure birds of all shapes and sizes to his hands with bananas and fruits. Right where we sat for breakfast, on the patio around his home, he has a large 'bird feeder' which he fills with fruits gathered from the yard. ... read more

Buenas dias chicos Pura vida! I am sat in my room in the Best Western Hotel in Liberia, eating nachos with cream cheese and carton of wine, finishing this blog as I have completed my first volunteer project, with the Leatherback Trust. Just enjoyed a steak dinner and beers with some of the gang. Thought this was going to be a boring blog BUT lots of cool things happened so bit longer than usual. Before my normal boring updates I need to share one two three amazing experiences I have had these last 2 weeks! First amazing event, I was on a night patrol with Adam and Alex, It was a moonless dark night and we had walked the beach twice, on our second break at the northern end of the beach we were chatting when ... read more

Buenas dias chicos pura vida! Updates ref turtles, On a wet morning patrol at 0500 Adam and I spotted a Ridley turtle which we thought was dead as on its side but when we got closer we could see her pulse in her neck so we flipped her over and she was ok and waddled back to the sea, so worth the rainy walk to save a life :o) Annoyed did not have my camera with me doh! We have been seeing more turtles each night, as many as 4 a night totalling approx 19 loras (Oliver Ridley) and 3 Negras (East Pacific green turtle) have been seen this season, sometimes they abort or we only see tracks. Peak nesting is usually Nov to Jan. We are relocating all nests as the storm has meant hight ... read more

Hola! Made it safely to Liberia and picked up by Javi the project lead at Cabuyal Leatherback project, he is from Southern Spain. We stopped for some food and a beer before driving 40 mins to the camp, the last leg of the journey included an unsurfaced road, a river crossing and the final section a muddy trail to the camp entrance, only reachable by 4 x 4. Four other people already at the camp, Emma (volunteer) from Seattle, Claudia (Turtle research assistant) from Mexico, Adam from California and Kelsey from Ohio, both the latter completing their theses for their Biology Masters serving as research assistants. Emma heads off similar time to me in early Dec and the others are all here until March! There is a larger Leatherback project a couple of hours away on ... read more

DISASTROUS JOURNEY TO OSTIONAL Well we did in the end arrive safely at the Hotel Luna Azul in Ostional, but what a dreadful journey we had - even for us ‘seasoned’ travellers … … We left Hotel Cerro Lodge near Tárcoles at 0840 hours with our ‘Greenpath’ transport driver who had GPS on his phone on the front windscreen. He said that the journey would take about 4 hours which seemed to concur with what we could make out on his phone. After dropping off our two new Munich friends in Puerto Arenas and picking up a few supplies we continued towards Limonal and all was well - we thought this is great we are making good time. Alas that was not to last, our driver who did not speak very much English and I am ... read more

An article in Travel and Leisure wrote about the places to see the bluest water in the world. I have my own choice, but here are theirs: Crater Lake The deep blue waters that fill the caldera of the sunken volcano Mount Mazama help make Crater Lake one of America’s most beautiful lakes. The deep blue waters are almost crystal clear thanks to the fact that there are no incoming streams or rivers to make the water turbid. All of this makes it ideal for scuba divers willing to brave the chilly water. Crater Lake, located in Southern Oregon, is also the deepest lake in the United States, plunging to depths of 1,943 feet, with sunlight extending 400 feet down. This is a lake that I have best seen from above, on a flight to or ... read more

Wow, was just skimming the net and found our old blog. 2012 was my last entry. Life moves too fast! I am not going to update on what happened that last 5 years as most of you have connected with us through Facebook or some other from of social media. What is new now? we just opened another location in Playas del Coco. This is more like an office for Brenda and a small Scubapro retail shop. why would we move just down the street? First of all it is because we needed a separate office space. Our divemaster internship program has become very popular and this makes the shop loads of fun with movement of people moving in and out but it made working a lot harder. Trying to concentrate behind a computer with all ... read more

Not terribly sure when I made my mental ' bucket list ', but it's been cruising around for quite a while ! :) # 1 SAILING ~ the thought of flapping white sails, blue/turquoise seas, the wind in my hair, hot sun on my face................aahhhh. The dream came true last Monday. My birthday...in Costa Rica ! My husband booked us a trip on the beautiful schooner, ' Antares', based in Tamarindo. We waded out into the shallows, where the sea was as warm as bath water & climbed into a small motor boat for the short distance to Antares. We crested & crashed through large waves & a shrieking young woman clung to my right arm, as though her life depended on me. She seemed to relax a little once I started laughing, but didn't let ... read more
