The past three days have brought back so many memories and reminded me how much I love this country, there is definatly a natural mystic blowing in the air here. Its crazy how many people and friends ive met up with again without any numbers or contacts. Funny how the world works. Today is the start of my third week in Samara, a little beach village in the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast. We got here during Semana Santa, the week that everyone from the city goes to the coast. Our daily routine consisted of going to the beach during the day and going to the bar in the evening. There is one clothes shop here, two mini markets, two bars and one nightclub, so there's not a whole lot more to do. After 2 days we knew most of the people in the town, so by now we're pretty much locals (well, sort of) We've been snorkelling out by Isla Chora where there's a nice reef. One morning we went kayaking which was very relaxing, until my friend Rachel got caught by a wave and ended ... read more

Well we're leaving the beach tomorrow after a little over a week soaking up the rays. I'm currently in tamarindo with will, karin, and lucelena. For a group of strangers (all students except lucelena who teaches English) we get along great and have become very close. I loved the surfing here. The waves are great for the beginner but at the same time satisfying for the novice surfer. We also went on a nature trip and saw monkeys, porcupines, crocodiles and a plethora of birds. I hope all is well and i´ll talk to you all later. nick --for all the k-sigs..what happened to paul??-- ... read more

I have so much to tell, but only 15 minutes before we head back to the research station. I may come into town this weekend, but maybe not. Life is one minute at a time around here. I did get my first turtle on Tuesday night. I was patroling Playa Ventanas with Kaija on the early shift (7pm-11:30p) and we were on our second pass on the beach when we saw her. She was already up on the beach and was working on digging her nest. I made myself a body pit and layed down with my head at her tail. I watched as she dug and then she moved her fin over the nest and began to have contractions. I moved the fin out of the way and began counting. 65 eggs later, she started ... read more

We arrived at Playa Samara, on the pacific side of Costa Rica. Playa Samara has a reputation of being one of the country’s safest beaches due to the protection provided by a coral reef. The beach extends for 4 miles. The tropical forest surrounding the area gives you a chance to see Howler Monkeys and Sloths. We stayed at Hotel Las Brisas del Pacifico, which is located on Samara Beach, Guanacaste. We were fortunate to stay in the top bungalows which gave us a view of Samara Beach. In staying in the bungalows, don’t be afraid if you hear a deep howl or grunt over your roof. It's probably howler monkeys hanging around your bungalow. It wasn't surprising, around the hotel area, to see Iguanas as they were part of the landscape. The area is incredibly ... read more
