I maybe died a lot today. Unfortunately there are pretty much zero pictures because starting at 4am I was exploding out my ass. I woke up with my stomach raging, I ran for the bathroom and pretty much repeated that every 30min or so. I didn't sleep much. I lied there thinking, goddamned effing kokonda. This couldn't be what Chris had. This made Chris' little bug look like child's play. Around 8am, Chris headed up to the dining hall for breakfast. While up there, I could hear the pounding of the drums, signalling the return of the mantarays. Chris came back with a plate full of food in case I was hungry, and dressed up for mantaray swimming. I was too sick to be jealous. Forget eating. He looked a little guilty as he snuck out ... read more

I woke up for our last day on Coralview. We'd be here for the morning but after lunch our boat would be shuttling us to the next resort. I only had a 2.5hr ride this time so I was hopeful the seasickness wouldn't destroy me again. Breakfast was the usual fare of coffee, fruit, an "onion" pancake thing, and bread that was similar, but not, cornbread. Sometimes a crepe instead. We had wanted to do one last snorkeling trip but it turned out the water was choppier today. Not good for snorkeling we were told. We had another surprise awaiting us, though. Last night, the resort employees had come across a sea turtle. So they saved him for us to examine (gently) and then release back into the water. It turns out Coralview participates in turtle ... read more

Most days I've been so tired that I'm not awake any earlier than I have to be. Today, I happened to wake up as the sun was rising, though. Figuring no one else was awake and outdoors, I pulled on a pair of shorts and ran outside in my underwear to see the pink yellow sunrise. It wasn't cold but the mosquitoes were already awake so I snapped a quick picture. It wasn't until then, as I was about to head back inside, that I realized I wasn't the only one outside in my underwear. A few other people had the same idea! So, I ran back in and hopped back into bed for a little bit. That day Billy and I wanted to do the snorkeling safari. At that point, Chris had come down with ... read more

There were two reasons I wanted to go all the way out to Coralview for our beautiful island adventures. One, was the snorkeling with sharks (which we did the day before). The second, more important reason, were the Sawa-I-Lau Caves. Only the resorts (three or so) this far out did tours of the caves. Mostly because of proximity. They're these gorgeous limestone sea caves owned by the locals. That morning after breakfast we headed out to the caves in a motor boat. I really enjoyed the small boat travels- they didn't make me sick at all. We loved flying over the water, our whole group would laugh and yell when we'd hit a rough spot and bounce in our seats. Toki, our main guide, and his helper thought this was odd but funny. I think it's ... read more

Our boat leaves the harbour at 830am, which meant we had to be up for our bus ride to the harbour before that, and eating breakfast well before that. I slept hard in my air conditioned room, the last for a week. I was going to miss that luxury. It gets very hot and humid out on the islands. Smuggler's Cove breakfast was a buffet of random things like fruit and instant coffee. I hated drinking instant coffee in the Ireland hostels years ago- this is what that reminded me of. I normally drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day back home, so my one solid cup of coffee was being downgraded further lol. Oh well, when in Rome. The big modern bus drove a hoarde of us to the harbour for our water taxi. We ... read more

Today was a travel day from Rotorua to Auckland to Nadi, Fiji. We heard a rumor of bad traffic near Auckland so we hit the road at 7am, hopefully the last of the early days this trip. We decided to get driving and then stopped on the way at the most random food place in a rundown town. Literally, a small shop on the country crossroads. I ended up with a soggy but good sandwich, a custard pie and something colorful but unidentifiable. Me, "what's that?" Pointing at brightly colored cake. Cafe guy, "a Lolly cake. Me, "what's in it?" Cafe guy, "Lollies." Hm. Candy cake? 'Cause the closest thing to a lolly that I grew up with is a lollipop, and that's candy. So let's just run with it. And it was delicious, too. Tasted ... read more

Breakfast of champions this morning included a sampling of Dunkin Donuts, which happened to be a two minute walk from our hostel and quite convenient. It was a hell of a sugar rush for first thing in the morning, and really not very good. I wouldn't eat Dunkin Donuts back home in California. I was just hoping it might taste better in New Zealand. Oh well. I walked down the street and bought some savory potato pastries to ease the glycemic surge. They tasted ok. We loaded up in our giant van and headed out to the Waiotapu Geothermal Walk. There were various loops you can do but our group did the smaller of the loops. It seemed like it would be the more interesting part anyway. However, first, we were told we had to head ... read more

We woke up and headed a few doors down to find the closest coffee and breakfast, which happened to be a gym cafe type thing. Works for me! Latte and peanut butter protein ball. We assembled at the car, loaded up and headed to the first stop of the day for our continued roadtrip- Hobbiton. Initially when I'd planned out the entire itinerary for this trip, we were just heading to the South Island. My friends reviewed my plans and Nathan stated, "Looks good but you need to make one change. Include Hobbiton." I looked at my map- we had to fly out of Auckland anyway to get to Fiji, so if we just roadtripped south it was definitely doable. "Done," I replied. A good chunk of our group was pretty into Lord of the Rings, ... read more

Today was not expected to be all the exciting, and it wasn't. Just a travel day that required lots of driving and a flight. I was really sad to be leaving the beautiful South Island. I really hoped the North Island could compare. We were up early again, to enjoy breakfast at a local cafe. We ate real breakfasts again with fancy coffees. Someone got some sort of coffee that looked like a giant ice cream dessert. I enjoyed a veggie quiche with a hashbrown potato. Billy had some sort of pancakes smothered in a giant pile of berries that looked amazing. After that, we drove the rest of the way back to Queenstown, dropped off the rental car and waited for our flight. We were so scared of missing another flight that we ended up ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Milford Sound February 18th 2017

I can officially add Milford Sound to the list of some of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It's such a small area but the cliffs (towering thousands of feet high) over the water is breathtaking. We were up very early for a 6:00am breakfast at the Cafe. I chose yogurt with muesli- very yummy. And coffee of course. We were at the kayaking meeting place around 6:45am. It was literally right down the road, a little further than where we had walked yesterday. I think there's two or three companies in the area but we went with Roscoe's. Our guide, Mendela, turned out to be amazing. She was a well-traveled nomad who seemed to do jobs that had to do with yoga and guided small boat tours (kayaks, canoes, etc.). She was very informative ... read more
