I spent the morning with Arya, and then went clothes shopping. It was lovely. I never do this- just relax. =) Around 2pm, I headed towards Chris' work, picked us up coffee on the way. It was 100F outside. I was fairly certain it was hotter in California than it was in Nevada and Arizona. Go figure. Most people were like, "WHY are you going to the Grand Canyon in this heat?!" I dunno, maybe leaving the heat by walking right into damn furnace made some sense? You can't feel a third degree burn because you've fried your nerve endings. We got caught in little bits of rush hour traffic on our way to the Oakland Airport. In short order, we were off. Flight left on time, and it was an easy hour and a half ... read more

We were all very worried about the predicted apocalyptic traffic before and after the eclipse, on top of the usual morning rush hour traffic. Portland hadn't seemed crowded while we there so I'm not sure where all the "added millions of people" were hiding. Just in case, we still got up early. My dad wanted us all to be in the "path of totality." He and my stepmom (and now my daughter) were all camping in their RV in Albany. I didn't want to risk going so far and then back with all the crazy traffic AND a toddler. So we agreed to meet in the middle. Woodburn had a large park with a playground and was reportedly allowing eclipse viewing according to the internet (and a bbq I never actually saw happen). David and Cory ... read more

My plan that morning had been for everyone to get up and drive out to Bagby Hot Springs. Unfortunately, they were all out later than intended. Chris didn't get home until shortly after midnight which meant he had a headache at 5:30am. So we cancelled that plan because I didn't want Chris to get a migraine. We had far too much driving planned that day for that to happen. So, everyone went back to bed. We all met up in downtown Portland at the Saturday Market (it was Sunday). We glanced at the Voodoo donut line and decided hell no. Donuts are good but not THAT good. We have Psycho Donuts back in San Jose (they're just as good). We found coffee and then headed to our market. Anna really wanted to go and had heard ... read more

We flew in late on Friday night. Chris had to work all day (I had the day off) so Arya and I picked him up from work at 3:30pm. We got dinner on the way to the airport, flew through security and had a long wait in the terminal. I made a valiant effort to exhaust Arya by repeatedly running up and down the "travelator"- she gave up somewhere around the 15th trip. Our flight took off at 8:10pm and we arrived sometime around 9:30pm. Anna was already in Portland at our Airbnb house rental, and she was ready with eclipse themed wine and beer. God bless that girl. Arya had slept most of the flight, and I was very grateful I had packed the wearable baby carrier this trip. Otherwise I'm not sure how we ... read more

We woke up to the ceiling of our tent covered in condensation. At first I thought our tent leaked and then Chris explained basic science to me. Oh yeah. I guess we ARE in a lush meadow instead of on a dry peak. We tried to maneuver around the tent without making it rain on our heads. I didn't actually leave the tent til I was sure Billy and Joy were awake. None of us wanted to deal with the mosquitoes any longer than we had to. Flying bastards. At least the ones where we camped weren't as aggressive as the ones in Long Meadow. Those bastards will die trying to bite through seven layers of clothing. Once I was sure we were all wake, we all agreed to just pack up camp, eat some energy ... read more

I woke up with the sun again, swaying in the double hammock. I realized Billy was wandering around outside. I asked how he slept after the lightning excitement, and he recounted the story of his hammock ripping. He tried to get by with a broken hammock and then just ended up taking his sleeping bag and sleeping on the ground next to Joy's tent. I nudged Chris to see if he was still alive. He had a headache. I was worried he'd get a migraine so I got up, dug out ibuprofen for both of us and set about cleaning up our camp while he tried to sleep off the headache some more. I felt hungover from such little sleep. I knew I must have gotten SOME sleep because I had no memory of Billy's hammock ... read more

The unfortunate circumstance of camping on a mountaintop is the lack of water sources. So, when I rolled out of bed at 5:50am for a beautiful sunrise (not nearly as awesome as sunset the night before, tho), I had a choice- drink the last of my water... or make coffee. Ofcourse I chose coffee. C'mon, like that's a choice! I enjoyed my delicious cup of coffee, cold, because we didn't feel like dealing with the jetboil for just my coffee- also it wasn't very cold outside. As soon as the sun rose, it warmed up fast. We ate our cold lunches instead of cooking because of our shortness of water. Then we packed up camp and headed down the mountain to find some water. We headed for what I hoped would be "the saddle" on the ... read more

Chris and I woke up at the horrid hour of 4:45am. My parents are watching Arya for the weekend. Everyone kept asking if we were bringing her with us- heck no. I'm not bringing a toddler backpacking in bear country! We met up with Billy and Joy at Peet's coffee in Milpitas, and then continued our drive to Groveland to pick up sandwiches at Subway. We arrived at Yosemite's Big Oak Flat entrance about 9:30am- not bad timing! We had to pick up our permits here by 10am, or they'd be offered up first come, first serve to anyone else. The ranger helping the tourists in front of us in line seemed brusque at first. When it was my turn to review my route and plans with her, I must have passed whatever internal test she ... read more

Today was my favorite day. When I was washing the breakfast dishes at the communal spigot yesterday morning, another mom was telling me about a hike they did to the Chaos Crags. My sister had also mentioned this particular hike earlier this month when she camped here. I remembered her saying it was steep at parts but the mom made it seem totally doable with kids. Both really enjoyed it, and it apparently ends at a lake you can swim in. With nothing better to do today (besides canoeing later- Arya's been asking about going on a boat every day), that became our plan. We started out at 1045am, strolling up at toddler speed, which means lots of sitting on logs, picking up sticks, collecting rocks and even her first squat in the woods. The trail ... read more

This morning I'm enjoying my coffee by getting Arya to find the biggest pinecone she can find. She kicked, thrashed and flailed all night long, so I ended sleeping horizontal under the two of them instead of all of us vertical with an Arya sandwich. I love sleeping in tents, though. Also, this morning, I discovered the second thing we forgot to pack, the pancake mix. Eggs and bacon morning it is! Since most of the park was inaccessible due to heavy snow pack, we drove 1.5hr down the mountain and back up to the southwest park entrance. There we were able to check out the big new visitors center and atleast drive up as far as the Sulphur Works. Even though the road was closed past that point, they still allowed visitors to HIKE or ... read more
