MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! So I have made it safely to Perth, after a month of traveling around the south eastern parts of Australia. I hope that the Holidays find you in good health, and that Santa is kind to you this year. And although I may be on the other side of the world from my immediate family, I'm not alone. Thanks to the Arnolds for inviting me into their home. I hope you enjoy the stories and the photos. If you have any suggestions for making the blog more interesting (and posting more often isn't much of an option for me, sorry), feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide December 20th 2006

I stayed for a couple of nights in Adelaide. Impressions: Small city by day, quiet town by night. On the map, it looks like it might have been similar to Canberra, with a north and south section divided by a body of water (the River Torrens). Only a much more condensed version with less traffic circles. But Adelaide isn't trying to copy any other city. It's got its own charm that doesn't really compare with other cities that I've been to. What I liked about Adelaide is that it's very pedestrian friendly, full of old colonial style architecture, and it's really easy to get around to see all the sights in a day if you please. In fact, most of what a tourist might want to see is located all on the same street. How convienant! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » City Centre December 19th 2006

So I have spent the past week in Melbourne. First, I have to thank Imran, Dino & Emma, and of course Anthony for making my stay in Melbourne absolutely fantastic. So what did I see in Melbourne? What did I do? Surprisingly, not much. I did a lot, and saw a lot, but nothing touristy. I had debated seeing a few museums and such, but I ended up spending my days wandering around the city, enjoying the sights. When I first got to Melbourne, after taking the overnight bus from Canberra, I made my way out of the bus station, where a very helpful fellow told me how to get to my hostel. As I waited for the tram, a few ladies asked me "Aren't you freezing?" (It was perhaps 18, or 65), and I replied, ... read more

So I must now share stories about the Great Ocean Road. This was something at the top of my "must-see" list for Australia...and I couldn't be more excited to see it. Man-made tourist attractions may be cool, but nothing compares with the beauty sculpted by Mother Nature. I booked a tour with Todd, who runs his own company called Ride Tours, which is a fantastic 2-day tour of the Great Ocean Road. What a wonderful tour it was. Todd was a great tour guide, and the views were great despite the strong winds and light rain that we had on the first day. We drove to the end of the GOR, and worked our way back along the coast, stopping at Tower Hill for lunch, an extinct volcano where we saw koalas, grey kangaroos and emus. ... read more

So after another day in Sydney, I had enough of the busy city. I feel that Sydney is like NYC. All the tourists want to go there...it's the place to go. But I'm not a huge fan of NYC, and I'm not a huge fan of Sydney. Especially after the wonderful hike in the Blue Mountains...it was a bit of a shock being back downtown. I spent the last day in Sydney by visiting the Museum of New South Wales, and hanging out with two girls I met at the hostel. And then I was off to Canberra. I've been told by many people, including my roommate in the hostel room in Canberra, that the ACT (Aussie Capital Territory) boring and not worth spending time there. Or I've been told to "spend only a day or ... read more

So after wandering around Sydney, and being lazy on a beach in Manly, I've decided that I really am not the biggest fan of Sydney. It's just too much! The beach at Manly was nice, but Sydney is noisy and busy, and reminds me a bit of NYC. Not very impressed. But I am a fan of the Blue Mountains and Evan and his wonderful Walkabout Tour. I decided to escape the hustle and bustle and noise and poshiness (is that even a word?) of Sydney and head to the Blue Mountains. I also decided I wanted to a book a tour that would take me off the beaten track, and it's always good to support the small local guys, right? It was worth every penny and then some. We did a challenging 8km hike up ... read more

So after a rush to the airport in Denver (which I still think is one of the most architecturally interesting airports with its tent-style roof), I was back on the plane to LAX. After some confusion over checking in at the Qantas desk (at first they didn't have confirmation that I indeed had a visa to travel to Australia), I boarded the plane to Sydney. Stuck in a middle seat with bad circulation for 13 hours is not fun. I hope I get an aisle seat next time! So I arrived in Sydney surprisingly not too jetlaged, despite the fact that Tuesday, December 5th never existed. Just poof, gone, as we crossed the date line. If you lose time going west in North America, how is it that you fast forward and jump a day into ... read more

So on Friday, December 1st, I wandered around downtown Denver. I actually went into the Art Museum, which turned out to be pretty cool. The architecture of the building is really neat, and the artwork inside was nicely laid out and arranged. And it was a nice blend of different art styles, with something for everyone. However, I was highly annoyed by people on cell phones. I was always under the assumption that museums are places to be quiet, as everyone wants to enjoy the art in their own way.... Saturday we drove up to Garden of the Gods. The plan was to do a tour of the Gardens, then head to the Pikes Peak Cog Rail to go up Pikes Peak. However, it was rather snowy. And visibility was, well, non-existant. So after waiting a ... read more

So on Sarah's day off, we were off to Red Rocks Amphitheatre. All I have to say is: COOL!!! Ok, well, I guess I have a bit more to say that just that. The Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a rock formation that has been turned into an awesome concert venue. I will definitely have to see a concert there next summer when I fly back into Denver. It's not used for concerts in winter because of the snow, but the park is open and it is beautiful. The contrasts of red, white and green against the blue sky are just fantastic. Then it was off to a late lunch in Morrison, a tiny town just outside Red Rocks. We went to the Morrison Inn, and I have to recommend their nacho plate...it came in a heaping ... read more

Just to say hello to everyone from Denver! I arrived in Denver last night after a layover in Atlanta (Boring airport, by the way! I think I walked up and down the terminal about 10 times out of shear boredom). The Denver airport is nice...very well laid out from what I could tell, and the architecture is pretty neat, with the centre looking like a tent city and blending in with the mountains (or so I was told since I couldn't see the mountains through the snow). And it was snowing when I arrived, and it's been snowing on/off all day. I ventured around downtown a bit, and my first impression is that the city is a lot like Calgary...a cowtown that's up and coming. The Denver Art Museum is pretty neat...I didn't have time to ... read more
