First off, I have to say hi and thanks to Martin and Kylie for making this entry possible. So the three of us hired a car and drove up the west coast during a 1 week roadtrip. Yay roadtrip!!! After getting over the initial shock of the vehicle we were provided with (a Hyundai Tucson, which is one of those fake SUV's...damn SUV city drivers!), we gathered the camping gear we were borrowing (for such a large vehicle, you would think there'd be more trunk space!) and set out on our trip. We discovered a few things about our "car" as we made our way up north...firstly that it was gutless, which made passing trailers and boats quite a nerve-racking experience (and road trains? Nah, not enough power to pass them!). Two of us also had ... read more

So yesterday I handed in my two-week notice. I will be leaving Perth on May 19th. Not forever, as we will have to drop the rental car back in Perth to avoid the $500 drop-off fees in Exmouth, but the next trip will be a transition into the next phase of my Aussie adventures. All I will tell you about our plans is that we plan to drive up to Shark Bay during a 1-week roadtrip in a hired car. Then after a few days back in Perth, we'll bus back up the coast to Exmouth, and continue onto Broome, where Kylie will fly back to Sydney to fly home. I will be in Broome without a clue of where to go next...well, not entirely true. I'd love to make it to Darwin before the ... read more

April 9-13, 2007. Sarah had her week off from studies, and I took a week off work. So where to? Back down south, to an even more beautiful region, one that is still sheltered from the tourism of Margaret River region. We visited Pemberton, Walpole and Denmark. We left Perth Monday morning. It hadn't hit me that we'd be going on a trip, and I had gone to bed without packing. It wasn't that I forgot...I was actually not in much of a traveling mood! But off we went! Our first stop was Serpentine Dam. I hadn't seen this much water inland in Oz, and the area was really pretty. We also visited Serpentine Falls...which must be much more impressive in winter when there's more water to make the falls...but it was relaxing to sit ... read more

So what have I been up to lately? Not a whole lot besides working full time at Cafe Mozart in Mt Lawley, one of the suburbs just east of Perth. I'm working as much as possible, in hopes to have the funds to travel north. There has been the occasional evening activity, such as the night walk at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary. We saw lots of whoylies (kinda look like large field mice), bandicoots, tammar wallabies, black footed wallabies, and possums (which look nothing like opposums and look more like cats!). It was very interesting and quite a bit of fun to spot the animals in the dark. The Sanctuary was set up back in 1992, with the aim to keep foxes and cats out and native wildlife in by the use of fences. The project worked, ... read more

So after a couple months of crazy road trips and traveling from city to city, I have finally settled down for a bit. When I got back from my trips (Adelaide to Melbourne, Canberra/Sydney), I had a good look at my bank account and decided it was time to start finding a source of income. So I did the typical backpacker job of picking grapes for a few weeks. Or at least I thought it was typical backpacker...I met only one other backpacker (from France, so of course everyone was excited that I could speak French), as all the other pickers were local! I had been warned by many that picking fruit is back-breaking work...I suppose it's not everyone's idea of fun. Who wants to sweat and lift heavy boxes and do nothing but cut vines ... read more

So I didn't mean to, but I've ended up visiting every city again in the past couple of weeks. After the massive road trip ending in Melbourne, I was off to Canberra to visit Anthony. It was nice to just relax after the road trip. I had issues with the public transport in Canberra, as the buses ran only once per hour during off-peak times, and of course I managed to miss the bus, or lose track of time, and end up waiting another hour. One afternoon I managed to miss the bus twice! So I didn't really see anything new in Canberra, but I had a great time anyways. Did some star gazing the first evening...I don't think I will ever get tired of seeing the night sky! Did you know that Orion and the ... read more

And onto the second part of our insane road trip. So we had made it into Victoria, staying the night in Portland in a caravan in a backyard. We decided to head up to the Grampians, as by now we were used to driving all day. On the way to the Grampians, we decided to stop at Mt Eccles, which had a little blurb written about it in the Lonely Planet. It was an extinct volcano, rich with the trees koalas love so much. On our drive, we saw what we thought must be Mt Eccles, as the mountain in the distance had a distinct volcanic shape to it. Like a Mt Fuji without snow. But the signs led away from our volcano, and it turned out that the hill we had seen was Mt Napier. ... read more

Yay for road trips! So my wonderful Danish friend had emailed me to tell me he was going to be in Australia and suggested we do a massive road trip. And as I haven't yet found a job and money wasn't too tight yet, how could I pass up this opportunity? So on January 15th, I flew to Adelaide to meet up with Tue. There was a bit of a mix-up with the hostel, but luckily the lady at Backpack Oz was nice enough to find us a room at the Adelaide Traveller's Inn (which I must say is rather hard to find and not well marked at all!). Tue hired a car in Melbourne that morning and drove along the Western Highway, arriving in Adelaide that evening. For those of you not familiar with how ... read more

So between visiting wineries, breweries, swimming off beautiful beaches and digging up kangaroo skeletons in sand dunes, our long weekend down south in the Margaret River region was fantastic. We decided to go south while everyone still had holidays. We also managed to pick the same weekend as the massive concert in Busselton, Southbound, which made getting accommodation in the area rather tricky, but we had a great time. We left on Saturday, driving south on our way to Margaret River. We stopped off in Pinjarra for a late morning break and coffee, wandering around the little town and finding lots of outdoor art. We then continued on, until we saw a sign for an art exhibition in Vasse. We found some absolutely beautiful art by local artists, all on display in what lo... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!! So tomorrow is 2007. An update on what I've been up to since arriving in Perth: Includes some old buildings, lots of beaches and swimming, some seed picking, and a concert. I've been in the Perth area for a little over a week, and I have to say I have yet to go downtown and see Perth. So what have I been up to? The first few days in Perth were devoted to running errands and doing last minute Christmas shopping. Christmas Eve we went to the Carols by Candlelight, held in a little park. It wasn't actually dark when it started, as Western Aus had just switched to Daylights Savings and the time for the Carols hadn't been changed, so the sun was still in the sky at the start. Luckily ... read more
