La Manche Provincial Park was a long time coming and the flags of welcome were an encouraging sign. We had passed many small villages usually at the bottom of a steep mountain. One such was the much discussed Witless Bay. From here the ECO tours whale excursion leave. Elaine who runs the B&B had been approached via email. Now the man with the Zodiac was interviewed. He was selling beers to the next four people he was taking out in red somewhat worn bodysuits said to be floating devices ….with open legs? … Don’t think so. His answer was to tie up the bottoms. The suits are said to be regularly washed at the laundromat in town. WE did not BELIEVE that. The total impression he made was one piracy, mistruths, arrogance … I’ve got the ... read more

June 19-20 North Sydney N.S. to Argentia Nfld. …as of this blog all entries will be written by Miles, the co-pilot. and Chuleta, a little friend he picked up in Rustico P.E.I. Our fearless leader has an abhorrence for the first person singular, even avoiding books written in that person. So to alleviate writer stress she has chosen to change the approach and outlook of the blogs. We still have not written about our ferry crossing during which we were left in the wan and our intrepid driver was up deck enjoying the comfort of a 200$ cabin with four berths, hot shower and private toilet. She had brought her own food so was not forced to Pay 28$ for an evening meal of unknown quality and/or content. The parking lot the size of a football ... read more

June 18, Friday The Mountain Vista Campground was a disappointment. Here the man has three concerns …his puffin boat tour, his cottages, and then his camp sites. He admitted that the puffin tours are on the top of his list. The condition and general presentation of the washrooms attest to that. The toilet doors do not close. The plastic roof is covered in years of dead insects. The shower needs twenty-five cents for five minutes of water. There was a pile of dog poop beside one the rusted washing machine tubs that serve as fire pits. The grass needed cutting and no one had used a whipper snapper because even longer grass hugged all the intrusions in the ‘lawn’. Fresh paint was needed everywhere. This man’s father came from Holland in 1972 with seven children. The ... read more

June 17, Friday Margree and Baddeck Left Cheticamp. Said good-bye to Carmel and Patrick. Carmel and I exchanged books. Both the evening before and again this morning we all had time for a cup of tea and a good chat. The discussion was about the flooding in Northern BC where two of their children live. The news about this situation was only heard by me on the radio Saturday morning. It was so pleasant running into them again …for the third time. They are heading north on the Cabot Trail and I am aiming for Big Bras d’Or and the Mountain Vista Campground where the proprietor is more concerned in filling his boat with passengers to go see Puffins. The Cottages and campsites are owner on his list … his brochure does not even mention camping. ... read more

June 13, Route 4 and last of Coastal Shore Trail Drove from Campbell's Cove to Northumberland Provincial Park during the day. Stopped in Montague, a pretty little town, for breakfast and Wi-Fi access at MacDonald's ...they had one Mac, three traffic lights, a KFC, an Atlantic Superstore, a big Home Hardware, Tim Horton’s, very nice housesand and no RBC Branch. Butter and lemons were bought at the Superstore in preparation for the evening’s dinner of flounder, mashed potato from Idaho and left over chickpea salad. Spotted Carmel and Patrick in their Melbourne RV while I stopped take a shot of a very picturesque yellow house. I followed them but at one point the call of nature was too great. By pulling into an Esso station, using their facilities, buying a double scoop ice cream (will not ... read more

June 10, East Cape It rained all night. This morning the wan is covered in salt drizzle/mist. It is dry inside the wan and breakfast will be a ham and mayo sandwich. The subsequent arrangements needed have been made for the extra days now available in Nfld. since the St Pierre Miquelon trip has had to be cancelled. The rainy morning was a good time to settle all this. Once the sun began to shine the trip towards East Cape began. A stop was made at North Lake Harbour. Not a particularly pretty harbour but the beach afforded the chance to find the round end of a lobster trap, the same half round shape seen in Hopewell Rocks B&B. There it served as a frame for a lovely painting by a local artist. Frame and painting ... read more

June 4, Friday… in search of North Cape, a perfect day except for the fact that the sun did not shine. The MacAusland Woollen Mill is a short distance north east of the campground and it was the first destination of the day. There were no cars in the parking lot as there had been a few days ago. Lights were seen inside the building. Peaking in any window that was low enough for me to reach I saw no workers. Because there was no number beside the notice in the Coastal Drive booklet I dialled the tourism office. The man that answered was having a day off. He was nearby so he came to the parking lot. Seems the place did not open on weekends. The tourism guy was very kind to have interrupted his ... read more

June 3, Thursday Bloomfield P.E.I. ... south of Tignish Took a walk in soggy grass along the cliff of Waterford Campground. Waited till almost eleven and then I escaped the place. Highway 14 runs along the coast and I was heading towards West Cape and the Cedar Dunes Provincial Park. My first stop was Pleasant View Road. Driving down the rutted red road a stop was able to be made. This was going to be my first walk along a shore in P.E.I. I was all excited hoping to find some flotsam treasure. Some rocks, a piece of a wooden lobster trap and some driftwood was all I could scavenge. And so the day continued. I pulled into harbours and access roads to the waterline. In one place while I was walking along the bottom of ... read more
