Friday May 13, 2016 ...... Visiting Ministers Island just outside the town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea In 1790 Minister Andrew bought the island and built a house which parishioners visited when the tide made walking to the island possible. Reverend Andrew is long gone but the tides continue to come and go. In 1891 Sir William van Horne bought a parcel of land and began building a summer place, Covenhoven, befitting a railroad mogul. VAN HORNE, Sir WILLIAM CORNELIUS, railway builder and official, capitalist, and artist; b. 3 Feb. 1843 near Chelsea (Frankfort), Ill., eldest child of Cornelius Covenhoven Van Horne, a lawyer and farmer, and Mary Minier Richards.called upon Edward Maxwell of Montreal to design the house. Maxwell was instrumental in designing the CPR hotels and stations that were used as destinations by the patrons of ... read more

St. George is the only town listed close to where I am situated ... I have passed the sign on the TransCanada and have been told excellent seafood is to be had there. I when arrived from St. Stephen at the door of Bocabec Garden Cottages having no new groceries ... visions of canned salmon form in my head... The Apple Valley Cottage is located centrally... St. John is 76km east and St. Stephen 69km north-west. The beauty of the place is that St.Andrews by the Sea can be reached in 12km and Grand Manan in an hour, using the scenic 127. Ministers Island is just at the outskirts of St. Andrews. May 10, Tuesday – This Bocabec cottage was built in 2003. Everything in it is in tip-top condition. Only the cooking range is a ... read more

Grand Manan, Thursday, May 12, 2016 The first ferry of the day leaves for Grand Manan Island from Black Harbour at 09:30. It is advised to be in the waiting lineup forty five minutes before departure with all the huge transports, ATV trailers, pleasure boats, hydro work crew trucks, RV's , vans and automobiles plus walk on passengers. Everything rolled into the bowels of the ferry, even a caterpillar front loader! As with all ferry travel one cannot remain in ones vehicle. The trick is to find it again after the one hour and a half crossing time. With every intention of driving from one tip of the island to the other I headed towards Whistle Road. While stopped at a look-out, I met a mother and her college aged daughter. They knew of a trail ... read more

St. Stephen, NB, Canada's famous chocolate town does not rate a separate geographic deliniation in the headings. It is a town across the river from Maine that houses the Ganong Chocolate Factory. The red brick building is very impressive. It has a drive thru under an array of windows that brings you to the back of the building. I walked thru and found a well coiffed grey haired woman sitting on a bench. "Are you from around here?," I asked, thinking that she too was visiting the chocolate factory. "I live here."she said. How could she stand the smell of chocolate brewing every day? 'OH no, the two top floors are apartments and the second floor is for lawyer's and accountant's offices," she was quick to inform me. Quelle surprise! Turns out the factory moved to ... read more

Monday 09.05,2016 What a day! Stayed in my cosy feather bed until after nine. Outside the van ALL was covered in snow. The wind had been so strong during the night the van swayed noticeably on its four sturdy wheels. Phoned the lady in charge and she agreed to meet me in town and return my next nights camp fee. After another morning of a greasy breakie from Mac’s plus good coffee I drove off to find my Argentinian friend from Buenos Aires who lived in NB and I had met in Ottawa where she invited me to see her paintings in a juried exhibit put on by the Venezuelans. She and her husband are not at home but the neighbours have a key. I found 3502 on route 635 but no 3500. Well ! ... ... read more

Sunday, May 8, 2016 Cabano to Grand Falls via Transcanada Highway 2 Again today there were the huge advertisements about moose...dare I say ...on the loose? Again I am suffering from false advertising ... so where are alll these moose already. Better see more than one this trip and am only coming home afterseeing at least three kinds of whales.Am working out doors and it is hard to read the screen. At least it has recovered ... the screen that is ... from the vigorous cleaning done with Huggies baby wipes yesterday. Have arrived in New BBrunswick and namely Grand Falls my first stop on THe Great Maritime Adventure (GMA). Before venturing to find the apparently only open campsite in this area I stopped at the Falls in time to see the ZipLiners do their thing. ... read more

Riviere de Loup to Cabano May 07, 2016 Saturday Cabano was once a lumber town with a sawmill and enough work for the inhabitants. according to french widipekia, "Cabano est un carrefour industriel, commercial et touristique au Témiscouata. Il y existe un centre d'achat, Les Galeries Témis, ouvert en 1977.", carrfour meaning crossroads. Les Galeries is much like Place Bonaventure in Chelmsford near my northern Ontario hometown ... small, shops closed...displaying cars you could win with the purchase of a ticket. There seems to be an inordinate number of hotels, motels, and rooms for rent. Must be because of the "crosssings" of of highways going in four directions " Rivière-du-Loup et Edmundston au url=https://fr.wiki... read more

FRIDAY May 6, 2016 Charney to Cacouna (Levis - Riviere de Loup) The day began well with a good breakfast of clumpy scrambled eggs and bits of fruit lined up around perimeter of plate. All these breakies have too much sugar. Will be cooking for myself soon. The coffeewas delicious and the service was supreme! Driving thru Levis I was astonished to discover how many office towers were dedicated to Desjardins, the credit union and insurance company. “The Desjardins Group is the largest association of credit unions in North America. It was founded in 1900 in Lévis, Quebec by Alphonse Desjardins.” Wikipedia Further what should my eyes behold but a huge Doritos Nacho Truck suspended at an angle …being loaded?, getting rid of outdated bags? or recycling old Doritos into new bags? Marieville/Montreal to Charney/Levis/Quebec City From one quaint Quebecois town to another via Highway 133 & 132 made for an interesting thoroughly engrossing day ... too bad I had to keep the van on the road avoiding collisions with transports, bicycles and Detroit Mercedes wanabees. Every 100meters there was something of interest to shoot either with the phone or one of my three Sony Cybershots. Did stop for; the ultimate Quebec habitant design house with the dormers and curving roof, the double silver steeples of a 19th century stone Catholic Church, the Nicolet Cathedral that was built in the sixties and reflects the lines of the Olympic complex in Montreal, the pontoon airplane in the middle of a field beside many others, the corncrib three stories high and one city block long (well maybe not a whole ... read more

…my directional nose failed me more than once today and driving across the Island of Montreal was time-suicide … did not help that the signage is a bit French, that it was rush-hour and that the info is designed for drivers who know where they are going….actually drove thru ''the ditch' that I watched as the digging began in the early sixties. Autoroute #5 leads thru the ditch, directly to Pont Champlain, and the south side of the Island of Montreal which is an escape route to the south shore of the St. Lawrence, Sherbrooke and eventually New Brunswick. Lost over two hours negotiating freeways…local roads … turn arounds… gas station attendants … and montreal sign-age!… Was so frazzled had to stop and shop … it was an instant cure … OK so it was only ... read more
