The modern Welsh name for themselves is Cymry, and Cymru is the Welsh name for Wales. These words (both of which are pronounced ) are descended from the Brythonic word combrogi, meaning "fellow-countrymen". from wiki. two quick stops... need a car to explore the countryside filled with hills, green fields, sheep, cows, and stone houses .. not to mention castles. Holyhead … This was landing spot in Wales after the Dublin escape. The B&B was within walking distance from the harbour. The path was roundabout and longer than the shortcut found during the next outing. Because of the early arrival there was enough time to find the laundry and wash all of the two sets of clothes that were in dire need after the seven days in Ireland with only hand washing in bathroom sink. Wild Atlantic Way to Galway “The Wild Atlantic Way is a sensational journey of soaring cliffs and buzzing towns and cities, of hidden beaches and epic bays. So whether you drive it from end-to-end, or dip into it as the mood strikes, it's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” from http://www.ireland.com/en-gb/articles/wild-atlantic-way …. and I sat on a coach hurtling south along the coast thru small villages where many people waited to board the bus and go to the next town or the town after. In the wild atlantic waves surfers in black body suits could be seen riding in to the beach or floating out to sea in anticipation of the next swell... OK... saw it all in a flash but I did get that feeling of abandon … as if I were on the beach ... read more

Coming from Inverness the railway passes thru Thurso and then continues on to Wick where there is also an airport. The stay at Thurso House B&B was like being at home. Shiela and her husband were extremely welcoming. The town itself is small filled with stone built houses and buildings. The walls of these houses are over two feet thick ...50cm ? Never did see the shops...to busy planning to go to the most northeastern tip of the UK. "John o' Groats lies on Britain's northeastern tip, and is popular with tourists as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited British points on the mainland, with Land's End in Cornwall lying 876 miles (1,410 km) to the southwest. It is not the most northerly point on the island of Britain." (from wiki) Nearby Dunnet ... read more

It is amazing how many place names have been copied here from the ones in Canada .... OK ..... just kidding :-) Oct11 ...Two days...three sleeps in Stornaway.... such a nice neat town. A castle dominates the opposite shore and a comfortable walk thru the park leads to it. In the cafeteria... a Starbucks....Pumpkin Latte. REALLY!?...in Scotland ...off the Mainland. Passed right by. Had been to the Woodland Cafe where many people were enjoying lunch, snack, or tea and I had had lentil soup. The morning of the first day had been spent on the bus riding to Port Ness. What a difference from the landscape inTarbert on Harris. Towards Port Ness at the tip of Lewis, the scene was one of undulating hills covered in rusty grass and interspersed with peat banks. October 9 Monday, Cal-MAc Ferry to Tarbert Hairy-legs from the way out B&B was kind enough to bring me to the Uig Pier. Now I only had to wait untill14.00 when the ferry would leave for Tarbert on Harris, part of the Outer Hebredis. Anticipating a delicious breakfast I entered the closest restaurant just beside the Uig Pottery. It seemed to be anticeptic time and the whole place smelled violently of Lestoil! NO brekkie here. Did find a soggy brown bread egg and watercress sandwich at the petrol station snack shop. To drink a Nescafe in a paper cup with aluminium bottom was chosen. Pulling the aluminium tab the instant coffee was discovered under the aluminium at the bottom of the paper cup. Adding water the coffee was ready. Ate the impromptu brekkie in the terminal ... read more
