I never knew that ninth graders could be so scary until now. Emily's host sibling has the highest pitched screech ever and just wouldn't stop shrieking!! It was a good gathering, and it was fun, besides at the end when Rita (Emily's host sister) decided that she didn't want her 50 yuan back in change just because she was given fifteen 1 yuans along with bigger bills. She actually just threw the worst fit I have ever seen, because she just left all of the money on her chair and stormed out, screaming. But besides that scary incident, I met Annie (Celina's), Rita (Emily's), and Luke (Mike's). After lunch, at one of the malls on Wangfujin, Mike and Luke went home together, Ricky and Tony left to get Tony new glasses, and Annie, Rita, and Rose ... read more

Being sick is the worst thing ever. I had a headache, my entire body ached, and the fireworks just wouldn't stop!! I think i ended up only have a really bad migraine from the fireworks as they were actually the sounds of bombs and guns. I lost my appetite, and just tried to sleep it off, with all the lights turned off, and the curtains closed. I was given these pills that were for my headache and this powder that made the hot water all bitter and gross. But luckily I have a head nurse as a mother so she said that she knew what she was doing, and that I would get better. Even though I felt horrible, I tried to believe her and let her feed me whatever over the counter drugs she had, ... read more

The Newton Group today consisted of: Ms. Sargent (who planned it), Emily, Maia, Celina, Tony, Antoine, Ricky (I don't know why...) and Me. We met at dengshikou- the subway stop by the jingshan school which would end up being our meeting area for everything. We ended up going to Wangfujin- which is the shopping area by our school, which has at least 5 malls. I don't remember any of this being that exciting... the only thing that was fun was seeing the girls wince it had been 3 days- which felt like years since I had seen them last. So we had to talk about what we did for Chinese New year etc. We just walked around, and then planned to meet again on Saturday to also meet everyone's host sibling. xo- Michelle... read more

Today Mao Min picked me up in the morning and took me to the mall with her husband, father, and daughter. We walked around the stands that they had just for that week. Her father ended up buying his granddaughter and me a "chinese yo-yo" the one with like an hour glass thing, that you have to spin on a string with two sticks on either side... I tried and failed at the stand during my attempt to actually just spin it and pretend that I could do something.. We ate at a hot-pot restaurant inside the mall on the 5th floor... Mao Min remembering that I don't care for spicy foods ordered me the non spicy pot.. which ended up being good, even though I had my doubts. Afterwards we went back to Mao Min's ... read more

My oldest uncle took me and Rose to the Temple of Earth today for the temple fair. It was a lot of fun!! And guess who we just happened to bump into at the front gate?!?! Ricky, Miles, Victor, Antoine, and Tony!! So we ended up going with them around the place, I was the only one who played a few of the arcade games even though we all knew that they were rigged, uncle wanted me to try. :) I wish that I could upload my videos!!! but for some reason it's being blocked as of now, but I tried stinky tofu- and chicken lung and liver... and all this other random food. ughhh- it still gives me chills just thinking about it. After walking around the stands of everything ever imaginable, we all went ... read more

After I woke up, I was taken once again to Grandma's house to make dumplings and to celebrate the New year. We made leak and beef dumplings, which were really really yummy. And I learned that I am very bad at folding the dumplings, so I'm going to have to practice that sometime. My host family is really sweet though because even if my dumplings looked horrible they all tried to get one of mine and then they announced that they were eating my dumpling and it tasted the best out of all of them. :) We then re-watched the CCTV presentation as it replayed non stop. Oh and apparently there is a story saying that the day before Chinese New Year is when you should receive those red envelopes and then children are suppose to ... read more

So after I got off of the train, I was whisked away to my host grandmother's apartment. I didn't even get a chance to drop off my bags, they were just thrown into the trunk. We did the usual, ate a dinner with too many dishes, said greetings for the new year, the "children" including myself received red envelopes, and we watched the CCTV presentation of singers, dancers, and skits (which of course I barely understood). We played with fireworks, and watched them from the safety of the apartment. All in all, it was fun, although tiring because I didn't get back to my room until 1-2am the following day. It was filled with love, laughter, and life; everything that should be seen within a family gathering. miss you all- Michelle... read more

Our last day in Guilin started of with a good 45 minute run in the morning with Emily because we didn't have to be ready to go anywhere until 11:30am. Went to lunch and then the 7 of us left waited for the Train to Beijing. A good 23 hour train ride, a few hours less than the last. The funny thing is that we got to the Train station a couple of hours early and while we thought our tour guide had left us, an hour later he showed up and we couldn't stop laughing, because it was just so absurd that he would show up again when we had already tipped him and said goodbye. The thing that was odd was that he didn't have anything to say to us, he just told us ... read more

All we did today included driving back to Guilin and on the way stopping by the Elephant mountain?? After we got back to the hotel, we ended walking around and finding an underground market/ shopping mall where Celina, Emily, Maia, and I got lost in. We went to McDonalds, KFC, Night Street (where they had stands set up to sell things, similar to West street), and my first Super Market (which was also underground) It was a fun and relaxing day, the only downfall was that it was practically below freezing and very windy. Who would have known that the whether can change from the perfect summer day to the worst day of winter. Love and miss you all- Michelle p.s. sooo we also went to reed-flute cave... and maybe we were already in Guilin.. I ... read more

We ended up having 6 hours of free time before dinner today. But in the morning we went and saw the Giant Banyan Tree then hiked up the Moon mountain. All together those two trips took up less an hour at most to do. It was simple and quick but going up stairs to get to the top of a mountain is extremely difficult considering the fact that the stairs are an inch above one another and about a foot in width... you have to take small but long steps... after a while they get tiring. During the 6 hours of free time- I just walked around West street in a sundress that I bought the day before for... about 5 US Dollars, and shopped around in 80 degree whether. It was gorgeous in Yangshou (?) ... read more
