With my luck, week 3 started with a visit to the University of Ghana's Public Hospital... as I twisted my ankle on my way to register for the traditional dance class. Ironic, I know. After going through the typical system of an outdoor hospital and telling myself that I was totally fine, as I looked at my swollen foot. I was sent off with a $1 (USD) icy-hot cream and $10 (USD) 2-angles x-rays. So, as I got back onto campus with my U-Pal, Atsu (pronounced: "Ah-choo", like from Robin Hood Men in Tights...but actually means twin in Twi) I went and registered for the dance class. So I had one class registered and set at the University, I was still waiting on one more, but for some reason out of the hundreds of classes being ... read more

This very morning I almost stepped on a dead, squashed into the ground, teenage chicken (that in between what’s considered a chick and a chicken). I started to laugh hysterically as soon as I looked down just in time before getting dead chicken on my shoe. It was a sad sight to see but not the first or the last. At that moment, it was just the most shocking thing to wake up to on my walk to the University. It takes 30 minutes to walk from my host family’s house to the North gate of the University and then another 10 roughly to get from the gate to the CIEE office, but I ended up getting a ride from a faculty member at the gate. So far, my class times have not been posted, even ... read more

I landed in Accra, Ghana on Friday, January 11th 2013. Stepping off the plane from my lovely upgraded business class seat (where you get real silverware and hot towels), a rush of humidity hit my face. Remembering to not pull out my camera to take a picture of the plane, like I did in Russia...I jumped into the shuttle bus as quickly as I could to avoid the mosquitoes. Then the line to get through customs grew and grew...making what I expected to be a fast trek through, more than an hour long wait. Once through and my luggage pulled off of the conveyer belt, the quest to find the hopefully still waiting there CIEE sign to take me to their safe haven began. Weaving through men asking to take my luggage for me and if ... read more

And the Adventure Begins! So from the start, even before I left my house to board the plane that would take me half way to my final destination, I was on a roller coaster ride. One of those crazy rides that make you want to have the insane adrenaline rush but also puke just by the mere thought of getting in the line. And it’s funny, odd actually for me to even be feeling the butterflies frantically trying to escape my body; I have never experienced such a wave of emotions until now. My parents stayed with me until the very latest that they could. I know, they’re crazy, for waiting the entire hour that it took for me to get through checking in and security…airports; I’ve been through enough of them to be sick of ... read more

Dublin: First Time for Everything: So…my friend and I ended up not being able to meet up the entire time I was in Dublin, but the most antsy time for me was I first landed in Dublin and could not find her at our meeting place that I was already late to…yes…I guess there’s a reoccurring theme to me being late…I’ve been bad about time and planning since a month into BRIC, why these posts were never written…so I’m just getting back into my usual course of overprotectiveness on everything-which causes me to be somewhat obsessive about my plans and calendar that I used to keep…I should probably take that out of my suitcase that it’s been hiding in since the first plane took off back in Boston… Anyways, yes, so I could not find my ... read more

Okay, so to get this straight, no, this post is not about the great condiment, Ketchup. I apologize for getting your hopes high. I am currently on the 8 hour plane ride to Beijing, China from Moscow, Russia and decided to take this opportunity to finally “Catch-up” on my blog. ( I know, I’m clever, tricking you into clicking this post because of the title.) In reality though, I just woke up from an almost 2 hour nap and came up with the title of this post right now and here- clearly I’m hungry and luckily food is on its way!! So while I have been taking over friends’ Twitter feeds and Facebook newsfeeds with the help of Instagram …The ability to share a couple of pictures to show what my day looked like in captions ... read more

The Wall: Oh, how I’ve missed my 2nd home- Beijing: (My 2nd home because of the amazing Liu family, my 2010 host family). So, I’m biased…a little…but I just absolutely love Beijing. Not only because of my host family but because of the rich culture and history that you can find on every street corner…well for the most part…every corner… The Great Wall hike and overnight stay that the BRIC group did this semester was worth every painful- almost life-ending step that we took on the empty wall path. I have been on the Wall 3 times now, and this last time was the most memorable and breathtaking because it was the longest hike and the best least used path I have been on. Even if it was exhausting, to have a family who was just ... read more

Moscow: I’m trying to remember what I did in that city but to be honest, I don’t remember much. It could be partly because I disliked the city a lot, compared to St. Petersburg or that I had to finish up Prof. C’s papers before we left for China (Which was the deadline). Either way, the only part that I really remember enjoying was our contact in Moscow, Kim and the Expat dinner that we attended, where I met a new possible mentor of mine. Besides that, Moscow brought out the dreadfulness of Russia for me. There was limited architecture and it was harder to walk around in comparison to St. P. Oh, wait, pause that thought- we actually saw a pretty cool bunker, where we rand down and up around 20 floors? To see…it was ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Saint Petersburg September 2nd 2012

The entire day before the long early morning was eventful. I witnessed a celebration of The Day of Knowledge (The first of September when all students start school), saw Van Gogh and other amazing artists paintings up close at the hermitage, walked around St. Petersburg a lot, took a nap (luckily), ate at Stolles (and tried the cabbage and the white fish perogies and borsch of course), and got to hang out with the majority of BRIC students before I decided to be "independent". I do think that this sums up my time in Russia thus far. I never know what's going to happen so I just have to go with the flow and keep my fingers crossed, my pockets in check, and wait to see where the day takes me. Even if that means sitting ... read more

Stranded on an Island. So I am fully aware that the only two posts that I have so far clearly start off with a negative tone. In reality, though, I have learned a lot through all of these experiences. For instance, who can say that they have actually been stranded on an island? I CAN! Of course, I end up getting stuck in the rain for 4-5 hours at the beginning of the day...It was all because of some random bridge and me being too cheap to pay or even find a taxi to make an extremely long detour (if possible) back to the hotel. So instead, here's what I learned happens when you get stranded on one of the many Islands of St. Petersburg, Russia: 1. You freeze your butt off 2. You really don't ... read more
