I went back to City Center Mall last night; taxis here are ridiculously expensive and most do not have meters. Make sure you know how much you're paying before you leave! I didn't want to drive myself because I'm still a little nervous about the traffic; judging by the traffic at the souk at night, I didn't even want to deal with it. When I arrived, it was significantly different than earlier. It was packed! I don't do well in crowds, and I could the grouch coming. I decided to check out the movies and picked Pitch Perfect; I had seen previews during the day and it looked entertaining. It was, though I really am not one for unnecessary vulgar humor. The worst part, was the people talking incessantly during the movie. It was worse than ... read more

Yesterday was amazing. Just amazing. I seriously never even left the room. I kept my shades drawn and the air cool. I took a nice long shower and ordered room service. Twice. The food was not good, and was expensive, but it did the trick. I watched movies, sent some emails to a few people I've talked to recently and slept and slept... Almost done with the Princess Bride as well! This morning I woke up early and decided to try driving around this city. Dubai is dead before noon on Fridays, and I was pretty sure Doha would be the same. It is. I travelled up to The Pearl, which is this new development they are constructing; there are a bunch of man made islands, high end hotels, and huge "villas" on the water. I ... read more

Today started bright and early, meeting my new boss at 7 to pick up a couple of other coworkers and head to our big kickoff meeting. I won't go into the specifics about a sensitive project, but it sounds interesting and the clients are... interesting as well. I'll be busy for the next few months! The meeting took up most of the day - well, the meeting itself was over in two hours (some good fattening munchies on hand as well - perfect since i had zero for breakfast), then we headed to the office (which took about an hour) and proceeded to recap and start organizing for this huge project. By then, it was time to go back into town, pick up some info, drop my boss back at the airport and head back to ... read more

I am going to try to keep this short as I'm exhausted, but a lot happened today, so I'm exhausted! I woke up this morning at 5:15 (Dubai time - one hour ahead of Doha) and finished my packing and cleaning from the previous night. I was able to fit all of my stuff for a month into my laptop bag and carryon. Go me!!!! I was also able to catch a cab immediately upon leaving my building at 6, and we made it to the airport with no troubles. I was travelling on Fly Dubai out of Terminal 2. Terminal 2 is a very different place from the main airport; definitely the budget area, but not so bad. Because I had plenty of time, I grabbed an iced coffee and finished my book, The Illustrated ... read more

Just a quick blog to update you all. The last few days have been a bit hectic as it became more official that, not only am I going to work in Qatar, I am going for a month straight. I'm excited, nervous, disappointed, happy... The projects that I will be working on will be very interesting, plus the office is short staff members, so I feel good about helping out. I'm nervous working in another country, one that is even more conservative than here. It should not be too bad except that the laws are actually enforced from what I hear, unlike Dubai. I hear there is not much to do - the alcohol is severely limited and Doha is just a big city in the desert. From what I understand, the touristy stuff will take ... read more

We played our third league game on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we were creamed again, but we actually played a great team - both skill wise and personality. Many of the girls on my team have never played soccer before, so they are still learning (some of the basics need time to take hold), but it is amazing to see how much they've improved every week. I had a few shots on goal; one of them, I admittedly panicked and probably could have gotten it otherwise. Grrr. Stupid alexis! Sadly, my shin splints which have been bothering me since our first game three weeks ago have only gotten worse, so I'll be taking it easy until they go away. I'm too old to play injured! And they friggin HURT during the game. Bad. One way to ensure I ... read more

Nothing much exciting this week, as usual. We had a small lunch on Friday with the coolest fugroians. Saturday was my Arabic class, followed by our weekly coed soccer game. Actually, the coed soccer game turned more into a hardcore practice for the girls. We ran and ran and ran some more (I hate it, but it is necessary as our fitness is far below the other teams). We played some good games and I have to say that I made an amazing goal. Now if only I can do that in the game tonight... Work has been somewhat slow for me this week. Dealing with the same clients, one of whom has returned and seems to delight in being mean to me. Fortunately, I've faced much worse than him (thank you Malibu!). I spent some ... read more

I've been threatening to do this for a while now, but I am now prepared to rank the 46 airports I've had the pleasure (or disappointment) to visit. And yes, I made a spreadsheet! Because I don't trust travelblog's column abilities, I am listing the airports from best to worst, followed by numbers which indicate the following: overall score - (times visited), things to do, layout, delays, friendliness, accessibility, cleanliness 1. Helsinki, Finland: 9.00 - (2), 7, 9, 9, 10, 9, 10 - I visited Helsinki airport twice in May 2004; I'd read that it was among the best airports in the world and I was happy to see it was not exaggerated. I remember the polished wood floors which looked freshly cleaned, the friendliness of the customs and ticket agents, and just the general unhurried, ... read more

You know, my favorite thing about living here is still the fact that I do something new every week. I'm sure eventually that will slow down, but in the meantime I am really enjoying the experiences that I am having and I hope they continue. So, aside from the usual Mall journey, or soccer practice/games, or Thursday night happy hour, or Friday brunch, I had two new experiences this week that I will share with you. Driving Sunday, I finally took myself to get a rental car. It just took about an hour of my time. Jamie had told me if I go to Satwa (actually, just outside the Al Karama metro station), there is a whole line of store fronts that specialize in renting cars. They are all cheap - no Hertz or Budget - ... read more

Once upon a time, in a land far far away from America, there was a little Filipino boy named Hansel* who enjoyed accompanying his mother to visit friends at her work. The women there would gush and pay all sorts of attention to the happy child, making him feel special. Hansel was tall for his age and had large chubby cheeks, perfect for women who loved babies. However, there was an "engineer" named Samar**, tall with long dark hair and white skin. She loved fat babies and despite the ample cheeks on his young face, she was determined to fatten him up even more. Samar liked nothing more than pinching the cheeks of small children and his were not quite fat enough. In fact, that was the reason that he had come to fear her: his ... read more
