Today started bright and early, meeting my new boss at 7 to pick up a couple of other coworkers and head to our big kickoff meeting. I won't go into the specifics about a sensitive project, but it sounds interesting and the clients are... interesting as well. I'll be busy for the next few months! The meeting took up most of the day - well, the meeting itself was over in two hours (some good fattening munchies on hand as well - perfect since i had zero for breakfast), then we headed to the office (which took about an hour) and proceeded to recap and start organizing for this huge project. By then, it was time to go back into town, pick up some info, drop my boss back at the airport and head back to our hotels. I came home and crashed! One thing I love about my room: you can shut out the entire world with the shades and it was nice and dark!
W called me at around 4:30 - I must have been out of it completely as he kept repeating my name, making sure it was me. I have no idea what I said. Well,
since he was heading home to Dubai to be with his family during Eid, he needed me to cover for him at the airport site on sunday and monday, and he was leaving his car for me. The Beast. So, I now have a car for the next five days - yay! Only thing: I fear to go too far with it as it kind of scares me, reliability-wise.
I made my way downstairs to pick up some supplies for the next few days: water, gatorade, shampoo, soap, etc. You know I always, always get hit on at the grocery store, but only when I am either not in the mood or looking like absolute crap. I had a little bit of both today and of course two guys tried chatting me up. Maybe tomorrow I'll be more chatty...
I met Matt at the souk again at 8 this evening; we tried the Malaysian place, which was pretty good. Not exactly the healthiest option but good flavors. honestly, I was a little reluctant because I'd been reading through some of the blogs on here, and the latest on Qatar had a story about this place that was pretty
nasty. However, I decided to disregard the blog for two reasons: 1. I think what she thought was a cockroach was actually a shrimp head and 2. since she didn't put another blog up for anything else, how do I believe her? Whatever, food was good.
We wandered about the souk some more, which was busy busy. Lots of locals, people smoking sheesha, guys watching football (soccer), and construction of a stage for most likely eid celebrations. I wondered if they would slaughter a goat on stage - apparently the slaughter of goats is an eid tradition. I may be a vegetarian for a while... We also wandered around the gold souk, which was closed, but gorgeous; it was indoors and had beautiful decorations, including a cool elevator and dhow replica. We checked out an area that sold birds, which was extremely interesting! I'm not sure what the flying rat was in this one cage, but he was cute, fascinating, and had endless energy! One of the guys pushing a wheelbarrow tried to talk to me about it and some birds, but I have no idea what he was saying. There were also rabbits, colored chicks, and turtles, and
cats.
I forgot to put captions on my photos, but they're pretty straightforward: souk stuff, my hotel, part of Doha, the Beast. Enjoy.
Tomorrow, I'm going to get some good sleep and maybe try some exploring (I may save that for Friday though). Eid Mubarak!
