As usual, Thursday at work ended on a hectic note. An early morning meeting and a report due and thrown together up until the last possible minute. I made it to the airport with very little traffic, and once again took the daily United flight to Dubai. We were delayed and sat on the taxiway for almost an hour, meaning I watched almost all of Pirates of the Carribbean on the "short" flight. I finally decided to get my egate - of course, there were no lines at customs but I made myself go through with it. Egate means that when I fly through Dubai, I can access a shorter customs process with an access card and my thumbpring. Woohoo! No more lines! Friday, I slept in a bit then went to the Mall of the ... read more

We got Tuesday, December 18th off of work as everyone celebrated Qatar's National Day. They had been preparing for WEEKS - flags all over the country, bleachers lining the corniche, cars decked out in national colors... But Tuesday definitely took the cake. I slept in and rolled out of bed to go to work for a little while; we had a big report due on Thursday and I just work better when it's quiet. I got a lot accomplished and worked a solid, uninterrupted four straight hours until I left. I was afraid of the traffic because while it was a smooth ride IN to the office, I knew heading back was going to be a nightmare. My hotel is located in New Doha and right near the corniche. Sure enough, as I approached, the road ... read more

Like many of my blogs in Qatar, this has to do with the driving. Positives and negatives. Negatives. These people are the most aggressive drivers I've ever come across. I have had people beeping and flashing their lights behind me when we are in bumper to bumper traffic waiting for the lights to change - what the heck do they want me to do???? It is complete and utter insanity, which gives me new respect for police officers in the US. These people can so easily cause an accident and they really don't care. They pass on the shoulders, in between lanes, ride your bumper until you move no matter how busy traffic is... Roundabouts? Frightening at times! Most roundabouts are at least two lanes wide and most are three - apparently you can be in ... read more

Friday was a wonderful day. I had stayed up late doing some work Thursday night, but was able to sleep in Friday. I had wanted to take a trip to the beach town, Al Khor, about 40km north of Doha, but just didn't want to. Instead, I went to the Villagio Mall and shopped til I was about to drop! I bought a (reimburseable) blackberry for work, skirts, shirts, sweaters... I still need boots and a coat though; it is getting cold here. No, really! I took myself to a movie: Red Dawn. Completely cheesy and predictable, but I enjoyed it more than I thought. The movie almost (but not quite) drowned out the people talking throughout; people here have no respect for others in theaters - they talk on their phones or to each other, ... read more

After this week's issues with ordering foods, I stocked up on some healthier options that I can use at my own bare-bones hotel room. I have a fridge and a kettle - limited options but I am making do. Still no sign of a slow cooker anywhere... :( It has not been my favorite last few days, but I think it is mostly because I'm getting a little stir crazy in a one room hotel room where the only thing to do is mess around on the internet, which doesn't even work half the time. I miss cooking. So, I prepared my lunches for the week as well as easy snacks for the rest. I can munch on those for a while, right? I just had a giant steak delivered from Applebee's so I'm set on ... read more

It was back to work as usual starting on Tuesday and what a busy week it was! One of my projects was one of my first major site visits and I got to meet various French people at a french company. I don't think I've been around so much French speaking individuals since my sister's wedding! And seriously, are all french girls gorgeous? It was a pleasant day - many of these people have been here for about three years while a couple have only been here a few months. That part of the day was great. Actually, despite being incredibly busy, the work aspect of the week was great! Then I decided to get something quick to eat so I made a stop at Quizno's. 45 minutes later I got my sandwich. The "manager" was ... read more

Saturday was round two of the Sevens and it was a gorgeous day out. We sat in the same area as the previous evening and drank some more heinekins. It was even more crowded - whether that was due to the weather, the fact that it was more dramatic games or a mixture of both I don't know. I think the sun wore me out because I left soon after sunset on my own. Someone put their foot down and the buses were nice and organized this time - I walked to the JLT line, was directed to one of the staggered buses, boarded a full, but not packed bus and after a ten minute wait we were on our way. As soon as I got home, I was out. Sam came home a little later ... read more

I woke up (with Sam's help) early this morning to get ready for the main reason to return to Dubai this weekend. The Rugby Sevens. This was Sam's big adventure and since she'll soon be leaving to move to Australia, this is the last time I'll get to really hang out with her. The day was pretty eventful and i hope you like the pictures. We picked up Sandra via taxi and headed way the heck out - a good half hour drive - to where the sevens are played. They probably did this because it is basically an drunken expat festival. Sam and I had trouble earlier finding a taxi and had to walk in the rain, so we prepared for a wet day in the backseat by fitting ourselves into large garbage bags like ... read more

Well, the day has ended just like it began – frustrating. Travelblog is down and it is already passed my bedtime, so I’m writing this on word to copy in later so I don’t forget everything. I had an early morning weekly meeting at 7:30 with our big client for my big project. I thought I would be going myself but I got a text from my boss who met me there. He hasn’t been involved in the project but he is definitely good at laying out the facts and making the client happy at the same time – a rare talent. We were out in 25 minutes, as opposed to the hour they usually keep the other meetings. So, it went quite well, only I was upset before for some reason, I could not say ... read more

It was an extremely busy, hectic week at work, with meetings, new projects and trying to finish one huge report. Nothing special report, but observations of life in Qatar, or the Middle East in general. First of all - fried chicken. Always! There is KFC, MFC, SFC, etc. But instead of mashed potatoes and biscuits, they come with french fries and a hamburger bun - really? Fast food here is very very prevalent. I'm not a fan of fast food, but I've had more than a fare share, especially since this is served at work. Another observation is having children ride in the cars in crazy traffic and not be in their car seats. I don't even know if there is a carseat in the car. I get behind these cars with kids standing up between ... read more
