Week 18? Really? That is just so strange to me. I've been living in Dubai for more than 4 months. Since Gwen left, life has returned to some sense of normalcy. I went back to work Sunday morning and thus a difficult week at work was begun. The week before, I'd received a terrific package from my parents, which contained sunscreen, a few movies I'd ordered, my new kindle cover, and (most importantly) two large bags of pretzels! (The pretzels didn't last very long and Sam literally ate the every last morselly bit). There were also a few items of my Grandmother's, who passed away August 13th, that my parents gave to me, including some of her jewelry. I do miss her. I think I actually had a (small) glass of wine every night last week ... read more

Saturday morning, Gwen and I lazed about, took our time getting up and ready (she had to pack too). Eventually, we went to the metro to Ibn Battuta where I asked a taxi driver if he would drive us to Ferrari World, near Abu Dhabi. "Ferrari World? Yes, that is a great place!" He was very excited. He told us a little about the rides and it was the second super friendly cab driver in a row (the guy the previous night was all excited about some Pakistani Cricket World Cup or something...) We arrived at Ferrari World and wanted to put our bags somewhere. We posed at the entrance and made our way through security with our bags. Twice. Then we waited about 40 minutes in line to get tickets. I decided at one point ... read more

We woke up early friday morning to being a very busy, but very fun day. I had made reservations at the Burj Khalifa for 10:30am. If you make reservations, you pay 100AED each, as opposed to 400AED if you buy there. We took a taxi to Dubai Mall and I showed her around the biggest mall in the morning as much as I could without getting lost. We saw the indoor aquarium and the new Cheesecake Factory, which is apparently its first international restaurant. We then made our way to "At the Top" which is on the lowest floor of the mall. We were close enough to our time that they let us through, so we wandered around the exhibit in the foyer before they sent our group through security. Then there is a moving platform ... read more

I wound up not going to work on Sunday. I had planned to go in around noon, but I was just too sick. Then Sunday night, I talked to my coworker and it was obvious to him that I was still quite ill, so I stayed home on Monday as well. I usually get pretty freaked out when I am away from work for so long. So, I went in Tuesday morning, hoping to work until 2. Fortunately, unlike my previous job, even though I had 53 emails waiting for me, none were an emergency. I worked for a few hours responding and organizing my reports and files for the next day before I caught a ride home with a coworker who was going to a conference near my home at 11. Meanwhile, Monday night, Jamie ... read more

I freaked out a little, hoping that no major issues would come up today on my way to catch my flight in Milan at 4pm. So, I woke up super early and caught the 5:46am train from Riomaggiore that would take me to Genova. I had studied the train schedule we had take a picture of in La Spezia until I felt comfortable with my plan. However, because it was so early, the ticket station was not open and a couple of Austrailian guys waiting across the tracks told me how to get over there. When I got on the almost empty train, I chose my window seat and waited to explain to the conductor. A conductor never appeared. Cool! Unfortunately, because it was such an early hour, I didn't get to see all the incredible ... read more

After leaving Gwosh at the little beer cafe last night, I decided I just wanted to get some sleep and went back to my hostel. I couldn't figure out the door, so someone opened it and there were three people sitting at the dining table chatting. Oliver was a german who lived there 4 or 5 months of the year and helped out the hostel for room and board. Phoebe was my one roommate, a girl from San Francisco who seemed pretty cool. And there was a french guy who seemed nice, but a bit quiet and aloof and he was there visiting for a couple days to go hiking. They invited me to sit and have a drink. I had water in my hands and was satisfied, but figured I may as well get to ... read more

Thursday morning we woke up to say goodbye to Florence and begin our last adventure: Cinque Terre. Continuing our learning experience from the run to the Rome station, we left at a decent hour. We walked along the streets of Florence to the agency to drop off the key and head to the train station: Santa Maria Novella. Gwosh had got the train tickets the previous evening, so we were all set. Along the way, we walked behind a woman walking her West Highland Terrier (Westie). I started laughing as did Gwen. The previous day during our vespa tour, there was a Westie at the first stop and Josh didn't like it - "Those things are viscious!" Well, my parents have one and she is by far the sweetest dog in the entire world as is ... read more

I woke up on Wednesday morning so excited for the Vespa tour - this was to be the highlight of my trip: touring the Tuscan countryside on a Vespa, sipping wine, having a great lunch, taking lots of photos. I got up nice and early, took a shower and got dressed. When Gwosh got up, I threw open the windows and ... RAIN??? I mean, I know that the forecast said there was to be rain today, but it wasn't supposed to hit til the afternoon. I was so disappointed. I left my short shorts on, hoping that it would clear up later in the day and become the beautiful weather we'd had almost the whole time once again. We went to a little corner shop for some capuccino and tried to warm up. We bought ... read more

So, today was our first day with no plans and we planned to sleep in. For me, that meant I was up at 8am. I watched TV, read a book, took a nice long shower in the world's tiniest shower. And waited for Gwosh to wake up. I thought about going for a walk, but my usual luck is that they would have woken while I was gone. As it was, they got up at noon and we eventually made our way outside. After some food which I can't remember we made our way to the Museum where Gwen was dying to see David. We paid a little extra for a tour which bypassed the longer line and after about 20 minutes of waiting in the hot sun, we were inside. Our tour was quick but ... read more

Learning from our mistake the day before, we actually scouted out the train departure times and left at a decent hour to catch the regional train at the closer station, Pompei Scavi, eating the few euros if we were to have caught the train at the city's train station. After our free breakfast, and saying goodbye to our great hosts at Easy Bed Hostel, we walked the 250 meters to the station. It was much better being able to sit around and wait for our train, rather than arriving at the last second. Even though we found seats together, the train was not as nice as the others, which really isn't saying much, and we stopped at every station on the way to Naples. We were very thankful we decided to take the earlier train because ... read more
