My accident on Monday traumatized me a bit - I get a little freaked out on the drive now! haha! Unfortunately, my neck is still a little stiff; when I turn my head more than a little, it is a reminder of the incident. I tried to call the police later Monday afternoon to report it, after he dropped off my laptops. They sent me around three times then I got a guy who said basically, if I wasn't in a car accident right now, they didn't care. I should call RTA and report him, but the call with the police put me off. Anyway, the rest of the week was pretty nice. We got out of work early on Wednesday and Thursday for the end of Ramadan. We also have Sunday and Monday off for ... read more

Ok, I just wrote a blog about 6 hours ago, but let me just say that those six hours have been among the craziest and most stressful of my life, but DEFINITELY during the time I've been here. We had our group meeting at 10 before our manager goes on leave. I was able to finish some work before my taxi came at noon. He was right on time and we headed to my apartment so I could meet the Du installation tech at 1:00. It is a long drive that I've made a million times before, so I sat back and started reading my kindle. I looked up and Whoa! There is a car about 6 inches from my face to my left. He was apparently trying to get in our lane between our taxi ... read more

I was looking forward to Friday last week because that was when I would have my first guests at my new apartment. Fortunately, my place is still too new to be messy, so it was easy to clean. However, cooking was something new! I haven't cooked since I've been here, so I was excited. First, I had to do some grocery shopping, which is an adventure itself. It is very hard to find things here that I am used to cooking with. For instance, the vanilla extract I found was not in a little vial, but as a powder. I hope that is the right thing... it tasted fine! Some of my usual vegetables either looked amazing (sweet potatoes, okra) or disgusting (celery). This would also be the first time I would be cooking with meat, ... read more

PAIT = Praise Allah It's Thursday (the middle eastern version of TGIF). This will be rather short as my life has been work, commute, grocery shopping. Last night was a good night at soccer. I seriously love the girls that we play with. Some of them can be a little whiny, which makes wonder how anyone can coach high school girls! But they're all fun and they've learned a lot since I started playing with them about a month ago. Our season starts in September and we are close to ready. We've had the assistant coach us the last two weeks while our regular coach is on holiday. Yesterday, he had us doing passing drills and play a scrimmage which focused on passing, and everyone has obviously improved. Each time he has us do this competitive ... read more

First, let me warn you that this will be a long one - a lot happened in the last 24 hours. Fortunately, I got to take some good photos (of more food), with my amazing camera. Ivan came into my office yesterday and said, "Oh wow! You have a G12!" I looked around and said, "I do?" Haha! At least now I know what type of camera I own and that apparently it's amazing. Good job, Ventucky crew! He showed me some more features and could not stop raving about it. So, I realized I should make a better effort of getting to know the individual functions better. I had an exciting job prospect today; I don't want to go into too much detail about the project, but I really hope we get it and that ... read more

Sunday is the day to return to work. Of course, I am back into the groove of not wanting to go back to work after a nice weekend. But there it was. At least there was no real pressure at work right? Well, I had to make sure that a test was being done that should have been done weeks ago. I trained an intern and a young engineer in how to log a borehole with mostly sand samples. I was tasked with taking care of an intern (and later, two interns) and was planning to take them to a job site in the heat of the summer to observe drilling operations. And last, but not least, I heard AGAIN from a project that I thought was complete weeks ago. I wound up talking to my ... read more

It was actually a busy weekend. Somehow, we all got out of work early on thursday. Joselet said that everyone had left and I went to go to the main building to see someone and it was locked! Whoohoo! She gave me a ride to the Mall (of course), where I proceeded to do some more shopping before going home. I still just could not find any dishes that hit my fancy. I came home, threw my stuff down, laid on my couch and passed the heck out. I woke around 10 pm and read my book until about 3 am. The next morning, I alternated between geneaology, finishing my book, and officially unpacking my stuff. It felt good to finally be able to put my suitcases away. I'd been living out of them two months, ... read more

I apologize for lack of pictures, but since I do not have internet yet at my new place, it is not as easy. I will take some good pictures for you this weekend and upload them Sunday. Yesterday was another slow day at work, so I actually left early with my Muslim coworker to go to the mall. I wanted to transfer some money, start my internet/cable service and get some more necessary supplies. First, I grabbed a ticket from Du, where you get your internet/cable/phone set up. My ticket said H383 and the board indicated they were only on H343, so I decided to walk across to the UAE exchange to send some of my cash to my home bank account, since I still do not have a bank account here and I wanted to ... read more

Last night was the first night in my new apartment! I was so excited. I still took the shuttle from work to the Metro, but I stopped at Mall of the Emirates. I had carried a bunch of things to work with me today in my Fugro briefcase (a previous christmas bonus/gift), but I needed to get some things while I was in the area. I went to Home Centre, which I think I'll just continue to frequent since they have some nice stuff for good prices. I was not quite as ready to buy as I thought though. I looked at kitchen stuff, which I really was not overly impressed with. And I could not decide on the colors I wanted for the towels (kitchen and baths). I wound up buying ice cube trays, a ... read more

I was kind of checked out of work today. I finished the pile analysis (yay!!! Actually doing engineering!!!!), set up some lab tests and worked a little on some report corrections. Then I had to go to DEWA to get the electric and water turned on and switched to my name at my new apartment. The taxi came to pick me up and took me to the metro near where it was supposed to be - he had no clue where it was. So, I went inside the metro terminal and asked a few people; fortunately the ticket seller knew that it was directly across the street (Sheikh Zayed Road). And very fortunately, each metro has an indoor pedestrian bridge across the highway and the outlet to DEWA was right next to the building. I walked ... read more
