Saturday was round two of the Sevens and it was a gorgeous day out. We sat in the same area as the previous evening and drank some more heinekins. It was even more crowded - whether that was due to the weather, the fact that it was more dramatic games or a mixture of both I don't know. I think the sun wore me out because I left soon after sunset on my own. Someone put their foot down and the buses were nice and organized this time - I walked to the JLT line, was directed to one of the staggered buses, boarded a full, but not packed bus and after a ten minute wait we were on our way. As soon as I got home, I was out. Sam came home a little later ... read more

I woke up (with Sam's help) early this morning to get ready for the main reason to return to Dubai this weekend. The Rugby Sevens. This was Sam's big adventure and since she'll soon be leaving to move to Australia, this is the last time I'll get to really hang out with her. The day was pretty eventful and i hope you like the pictures. We picked up Sandra via taxi and headed way the heck out - a good half hour drive - to where the sevens are played. They probably did this because it is basically an drunken expat festival. Sam and I had trouble earlier finding a taxi and had to walk in the rain, so we prepared for a wet day in the backseat by fitting ourselves into large garbage bags like ... read more

Well, the day has ended just like it began – frustrating. Travelblog is down and it is already passed my bedtime, so I’m writing this on word to copy in later so I don’t forget everything. I had an early morning weekly meeting at 7:30 with our big client for my big project. I thought I would be going myself but I got a text from my boss who met me there. He hasn’t been involved in the project but he is definitely good at laying out the facts and making the client happy at the same time – a rare talent. We were out in 25 minutes, as opposed to the hour they usually keep the other meetings. So, it went quite well, only I was upset before for some reason, I could not say ... read more

It was an extremely busy, hectic week at work, with meetings, new projects and trying to finish one huge report. Nothing special report, but observations of life in Qatar, or the Middle East in general. First of all - fried chicken. Always! There is KFC, MFC, SFC, etc. But instead of mashed potatoes and biscuits, they come with french fries and a hamburger bun - really? Fast food here is very very prevalent. I'm not a fan of fast food, but I've had more than a fare share, especially since this is served at work. Another observation is having children ride in the cars in crazy traffic and not be in their car seats. I don't even know if there is a carseat in the car. I get behind these cars with kids standing up between ... read more

First of all, let me say I am definitively in Qatar for another month to help out with work. Still don't know how long I'll be here - maybe longer! I do really enjoy the work here and they are so busy! Project after project comes in and all need help. I guess I'll know more next week, but I'm going back to Dubai for the next two weekends: this weekend to get some more stuff since I'll be here longer, the second to go to some big Rugby festival... game... match... something like that! Melvin and I will have thanksgiving this weekend in some way - either we'll cook or we'll just do a brunch. I can't believe I am completely (COMPLETELY!) missing my absolute favorite holiday! I've often been away from home, but I ... read more

I can cross another item off of "1000 Places to See Before You Die." I picked Matt up at his hotel at 3 this afternoon and we headed to the Doha Museum of Islamic Art. Qatar's current leader, is looking to turn his country into the leading cultural center of the Middle East and this museum is one of the masterpieces. We were not disappointed! The musuem is free, except for the temporary exhibits, and there is so much to see. There are four floors and they are loosely divided by artifacts, region and time. A few of my favorites were the calligraphy area, where there were just amazing scrolls and books - my absolute favorite were the tiny octagonal shaped Qurans, complete with special cases, dating about 500 years ago. The glass exhibition was ok, ... read more

After almost three straight weeks of working in Qatar, long days of course, I decided to spend a weekend at my beautiful apartment in Dubai. Not to mention I had lots of errands to run. The week was full of lots of work on two major projects. Wednesday, my coworker came to visit for a different project and to help out on one of mine. That evening, he, Indiana and Tony and I went back to this arabic restaurant in the middle of town where we had more appetizers and shisha. Definitely a good atmosphere- I like that instead of the bar scene, you see lots of people smoking shisha and drinking coffee. I got back at about 4am on Friday morning in Dubai, taking the Ladies taxi home. Seriously - what a difference!!! You don't ... read more

Sorry again for my lack of posts, but nothing really exciting has happened. Oh, I've been keeping quite busy, but I won't bore you with the details of my work. I will, however, bore you food and driving! About 2 to 3 hours everyday is devoted to driving - I guess in a way, that is exciting. I love being able to drive the Beast - I have no fear. I thought I'd figured out a good way to and from work on Thursday, but that must have still been part of the Eid Holiday as driving to and from work yesterday (Sunday) was complete torture. I left work a half hour later (7pm) than yesterday and the drive was fairly smooth (for Qatar). In some instances, the roundabout is a great thing. In others, it ... read more

I haven't written much lately as there is not much to write. Definitely, few pictures to take, but I'll try again this weekend. Work keeps me extremely busy. I go to work at 6:45 in the morning and leave the office around 6:30 in the evening. Which is ok, because all I do is sit in my hotel room and watch TV anyway. Tuesday night - I had a big report due, but I fell asleep at 9. I woke up at 1am and couldn't stop thinking of it, so I just got up and almost finished before going back to bed at 3am. Then back up at 5:30 to finish. Ick. Eventually, I may make my way to the health club onsite and at least ride a bike for a while. The first two days ... read more

The last couple of days I've been working on the new airport site. I can't wait until this airport is finished! (See my airport rankings blog). Of course, I am the only girl onsite, but I am working with a great group of guys. Respectful and hard working, plus the project is pretty well run. I did not expect that. We go to work at 7 and are off at 4. So while it has been an exhausting couple of days, it has been one of the best work experiences thus far. Aside from work, absolutely nothing is going on. I stocked my room with some foods so I would not eat out and so far it is working. I have noodles, granola bars, fruit, cheap pretzels, cheese, pudding, water, tea, bread, PB&J and juice.
