Well I'm pleased to announce my arrival back in Edinburgh after only a year and a half. One mild difference - it's now Winter and the last time I came here with Shawn it was Summer. We've spent three nights at the Edinburgh Central Novotel, a hotel close to the heart of the capital city, situated just behind Edinburgh Castle and the Edinburgh Greens. It's about a 10 minute walk up to the Royal Mile. We were lucky enough to have Mum's penpal, Moira, and her husband, Ian, chauffeur us around in a car that we'd hired. They took us up to Aberdeen, a lovely city up north. Here, like the fool I am, I wandered in to the icy cold North Sea just to 'whet' my appetite for the water. It was quite a rough ... read more

Still to come :) (can't publish anything until after I've submitted my report to Cruise Guru) ** UPDATE! So the competition is now done and dusted and guess what... I WON! Here's the link to the website with my photos, report and video: https://www.facebook.com/CruiseGuruAU#!/CruiseGuruAU/app_162383900546472 Here is a copy of my report: I’ll tell you why - it’s simple: luxury, all-inclusive meals, entertainment and easy travel all rolled up into a boat worthy of Mordor. Cruising really is for all ages: at 16, I cruised the Pacific on P&O’s Pacific Sun.At 21, I circumnavigated New Zealand on the Sun Princess. Now, at 26, I’ve cruised the Hawaiian Islands, ventured across the Pacific Ocean to Ensenada and then up to San Diego on the ‘Carnival Spirit’ as a... read more

Taipei isn't so bad this time round, there's plenty to do in this terminal and the trainride let me see some of the countryside. It's a really soggy 27 degrees, not nice weather at all! We're lucky it's never really this humid in Sydney! I'm stuck here for 5 hours in transit and then jump on the flight back home to Sydney. I'm looking forward to the last leg of the trip, the flight from London to here was actually half decent! Window seat, emergency exit = leg room and a wall to sleep against. I didn't sleep much because I'm trying to reset my body clock now rather than suffer from jetlag when I get home. Not that I'm going home anyway, as soon as I get to Sydney Airport there will be a bus ... read more

Next stop, Glasgow. A neat train ride from Edinburgh had us arrive in Glasgow early in the morning with only a day to explore the city's delights. There's a lot of hype about Glasgow, I've heard people refer to it as the 'Melbourne' of Scotland. I can't say we have really felt these vibes. Don't get me wrong, it's very pretty and we did a fair bit of exploring in our stunted allocation of time here, but I don't get the glamour, the excitement. This morning we had a leisurely stroll around Alexandra Park (yes, with our backpacks strapped to our shoulders... slightly painful) and then checked out the Botanical Gardens. This, I do admit, was quite fascinating and I'd say we spent a few good hours roaming the halls and rooms checking out all the ... read more

'Auld Reekie' - the local name for the city of Edinburgh. Probably the most stunning city I have ever set eyes on. Shawn and I, being the nomads we are, decided to trek it up to Bonny Scotland on a short break from London. First stop, Edinburgh. We flew with dodge EasyJet but survived all the same. We got on a double decker leather seated bus for 3 pounds and this took us into the heart of Edinburgh. From my side of the bus, the eye followed the streets of the New Town. It was only when Shawn said "look out to your right" that I did and was literally gobsmacked! There was the Old Town, up on an escarpment glistening in the sun (a miracle so the locals say, they NEVER see the sun!). There ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Islington July 3rd 2011

After a most epic flight from Sydney through to London via Taipei (28 hours!), I arrived at Heathrow where Shawn was waiting for me with my Oyster card. We hopped on the tube and headed straight back to Islington and to a pub for a well deserved pint of cider. We listened to a live jazz band and chilled into the night. I was quite taken aback by the daylight hours, it doesn't get dark until 10pm here in summer! Stark contrast to winter in London. We're staying with Ed and Sue who rent a gorgeous little flat in a really nice part of town. It only takes 40 minutes to walk into the centre of London from here, has several nearby tube stations, is leafy and reasonably quiet and has access to a trendy stretch ... read more

"The great book, always open and which we should make an effort to read, is that of Nature." - Antonio Gaudi. Of course. When in Bar-TH-elona the first thing that hits you is GAUDI-A-RAMA! I love the guy, he was brilliant for his time, but there is so much more to this stunning city than its reputation would like to suggest. So it´s cold here, not as cold as Austria, but there is a definite chill to the air... but the sun is shining off the ocean and the smell of the sea makes me feel all nostalgic... of home. But really that´s what travel is all about, to make you appreciate where you come from. I´m currently in a fit of jealousy after hearing that Australia will be having a 42 degree Australia Day! Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris January 18th 2011

When they say that Paris is the City of Light, they really do mean it. I spent 4 beautiful days in Paris and feel like I´ve only just scratched the surface of this place. As you have probably noticed by my lack of blogging, I packed in as much as was humanely possible. Not time for rest or relaxation! So Day 2 in Paris: Made a pilgrimage to the Père Lachaise Cemetery to visit the graves of Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. Headed to Montmartre and checked out the Basilisca on top of the hill, the artists´square and then had a traditional French meal (including escargots and boef bourginon). We headed back down the hill (I´d say mountain) to the Moulin Rouge which was bloody expensive so we flagged going in. From here we went to ... read more

Brussels was a bit of a surprise and a half. What a funky little city! We checked into the Chow Chow Palace as soon as we'd caught the train from Bruges to Brussels (which took just over an hour and a half). It was sad saying goodbye to our friends on Topdeck and we were lucky to get such a cool tour leader who even offered to drop us at the train station (cause everyone else was heading back to London from Bruges). We wanted to make the most of our time here because we were short of time (just one night). We made an attack plan and headed straight into to the centre of the city to see as much as could. So here's what we saw: Royal Palace Cinquantenaire park Palace of Justice Manneken ... read more

Today was officially the last day on the Topdeck tour for all of us. As a final treat, we got to head into the fairytale land of Bruges (or Brugge as the locals call it). This was well worth the drive, we walked down stunning streets with very medieval architecture that wound down and around until we hit the town square. It was seriously like standing in Cinderella, in each corner of the Markt square stood a highly decorated building. There were a few places I recognised from 'In Bruges', the bell tower and the canals etc which was super cool and exciting. So we ended up looking around a few shops, searched for the Tin Tin shop but to no avail, apparently it doesn't exist anymore. Oh well. So it was cute, really cute, and ... read more
