Oh Amsterdam, why do I have to leave you?! *went geocaching and had success! This is culture central, such an accepting, positive and free environment to be in. Everyone seems relaxed and chilled, not to fussed by other people's beliefs. But at the same time, the people seem to be social yet peaceful activists for the things they believe in, fighters against all injustices even if they don't necessarily concern them personally. For example, we saw an exhibition that was explaining to social climate in France at the moment where students are forced not to wear any religious icons to school. Whilst the exhibition didn't explicity propagate a wrong or right side to the argument, it did parallel this situation to the religious persecution of the Jews etc and also paralleling it to the communist regimes ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin January 12th 2011

Ohhhhhh I have a new love! Berlin :) Move over London and NZ, Berlin is the suavest city I've ever been to. I so wish I had more time to enjoy the place, I feel so rushed through. Although, Billie, Mum and I agreed last night that when Billz finishes uni and gets her placement we're coming back, woohoo. So for the purpose of ensuring my return, I've left much to return to. Brilliant plan. Today I started early with a freezing walking tour exploring the places commonly linked to the Third Reich. We visited places like the Reichstag, where the chancellery building stood, the Jewish memorial and Hitler's bunker. Our tour guide was amazing and had such a wealth of knowledge on the subject that I was madly envious of her. She's a student/lecturer at ... read more

I'm in the Deutschland! I absolutely adore Germany so far, first stop: Dresden! It is surprisingly beautiful and well maintained, despite it being bombed to smithereens in WWII. They have done so much to fix the place up and turn all the beautiful old buildings back to their former glory. I appreciated the Aussie restaurant we found called "Ayers Rock", had a yummy chilli chicken salad that really hit the spot. I'd like to come back here in the summer and get a warmer perspective of the place. Next stop, BERLIN!!!!! So excited xx Lex... read more

Some Prague lovin'! I love those days where you just plod around and take it all in, not stressing about trying to see and do everything... but you end up seeing everything and more! My favourite part of today was definitely visiting the Lennon Wall! The artistry was brilliant and the meaning of it so purposeful. It's its own little peaceful protest against communist rule. We spent the rest of the day checking out the usual sights, having coffees, taking random photographs and climbing bell towers. Our hostel is epic! It's called the Mosaic Hotel and has one of those showers that falls on you from the roof and has a powerful had held shower head as well. Great after a day out in the brisk chilly air of Czech Republic. We're just about to head ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Auschwitz January 10th 2011

Today was a day I was both looking forward to and dreading at the same time. I've been studying and teaching about the Shoah (The Holocaust) for over 10 years now. I've been to Israel, been to the International Holocaust Museum at Yad Vashem, heard hundreds of survivor testimonies in person, but this is the epitome of it all. A concentration camp. Not any concentration camp, the biggest and most gruesome: Auschwitz-Birkenau. 1 100 000 thousand people entered the gates that read Arbeit macht frei (work makes free) between 1942 and 1944 and never came back out. Mass murder. Genocide. Extermination. Jews. Gypsies. Homosexuals. The disabled. Asians. Political prisoners. All persecuted seemingly beyond that of human capability... that is what makes this place so profound, that you can walk in and see the horse stables the ... read more

Another epic day in Eastern Europe. I'm so impressed by the amount of things we are cramming into each day! Woke up nice and early and caught the bus into the centre of Krakow. Ella and I decided that we were going to see the Salt Mines, the Jewish Quarter and the Castle with the dragon's lair. We started making our way to the shuttle stop for the Salt Mines when we were mightily distracted by a huge shopping centre we found. We were averted for three hours in this shopping centre when we discovered that everything was super super cheap! We bought a whole heap of medication that we estimated would cost over $80 back home.. cost us 40 zlotys which equates to about 10 Euros which equates to about $14!! So we continued shopping, ... read more

What an epic day we had yesterday. Breakfast in Hungary, lunch in Slovakia and dinner in Poland. Our bus also had a car crash in between. Not that anyone was hurt, thankfully, but it set us back 2 hours and we ended up risking around the centre of Krakow at 9pm and had dinner when I'd much rather have been in bed! But oh well, it's just another adventure I can add to the inventory :) Today we are heading into the centre of Krakow to check out the salt mines, the palace as well as a few WWII historical sites (like where Schindler's factory was etc). I will update again tonight xx much love, Lex.... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest January 6th 2011

So I've now been in Budapest for two days. Despite absolutely loathing the place when we first arrived (mostly due to finding hairs in my bed, the sheets not reaching the length of the bed, me catching Liz's cold, the food being revolting and it being bloody freezing), Budapest has surely grown on me. In fact I've grown to love the city. The architecture is unbelievable, ranging from ancient Roman buildings through to Habsburg palaces and bland Soviet blocks. There are some amazing mansions dotted along the main boulevard that are kind of creepy but fascinating at the same time. Some elements of the city really remind me of London... and if you know me well you'd know how much I adore London. Once again, Ella and I decided to cram as much as we could ... read more

Got. to. love. Vienna!! Austria... I never knew! Such secrets you kept from me. Definitely my favourite place so far. We arrived in Vienna around 6ish, it was pitch black. We did a quick driving tour of the central city and then headed to the hostel. We had a quick costume change and then headed back into the centre to visit the Kursalon for a classical music concerts. It was so much fun, I enjoyed listening to Bach, Mozart (of course) and Strauss and got to hear some operatic singing and ballet dancing. All in all a great experience and I now feel so damn cultured!! We had a great sleep at the Wombat Hostel in Vienna (which was a super cool hostel) and in the morning Ella and I decided to see as much as ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg January 3rd 2011

This is our second day in Salzburg, my favourite city so far. It is stunning. Everything glistens in the snow, they have streets and shops that dazzle you as you walk past, a grand fortress on a mountain top and lots and lots of history. Not only did this place contribute to the break out of World War I, but it is also where Mozart was born and raised.... AND good ole' Sound of Music was set. Most of our tour group today went either on a Sound of Music tour (not for me thanks) or skiing (which we'll be doing when we go back to the Italian Alps after the tour ends anyway). So instead we made our way around the city centre, which is super easy to navigate, and then headed up to the ... read more
