Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice December 31st 2010

Venice. Where to start? It is beautiful, no doubt about that. The canals were fascinating, the gondolas were cool, I loved the stripey men (and one woman) and the glass and masks were funky. But can anyone say REPETITION?? Not that I'm complaining of course, it was everything I dreamed it would be, but you wouldn't need to go back twice. My favourite thing was getting to buy a copy of 'The Merchant of Venice' in Venice! How many people can say they've done that? Haha. And then it was New Years. We went to an Aussie Pub just out side of Venice and watched the countdown in the town square. Such an experience! The Italians brought their own firecrackers and so it was kind of like the Battle of the Somme (I have now come ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Verona December 31st 2010

This was just a stop off on our way through to Venice for New Years. What WAS exciting about this place, though, was that it is the setting of several Shakespearean plays... including Romeo and Juliet. They say the play is based on a true story and there is a balcony that they say is Juliet's. It was quite cute. I bought a little gift for Jess here and got my own name embroided beautifully (and better yet for free) but an Aussie gal working at the shop next to the balcony. Other than this, Verona had a few good shopping spots and a cool arena that had a huge star popping out of it for New Year. Next stop VENICE!!!... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Pompei December 30th 2010

Ahhh the trek to Pompeii. It was epic. That is all. Some people said I couldn't do it alone, others called me mad. Do I listen? Do I ever? Of course I bloody didn't... and so I trekked it solo from Rome to Napoli(Naples) on the Eurostar. Then caught the local train to Pompeii. I really enjoyed the time to myself and being able to remind myself that I can actually travel alone. I've done it before, nothing has changed. The scenery was just magnificent on the way down through the mountain ranges. I got to have a quick browse around Napoli Centrale before hopping on the local to Pompeii. This train ride took me right past Mt Vesuvius so I got a good look at the rock before the ruins. Jared had pre-warned me that ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome December 29th 2010

Another chilly day in Roma spent exploring the Vatican City (which, interestingly enough, is a country separate to Italy). Liz woke me up bright and early: "Are you serious?" said I. "Get up now," said Liz. So off we trot into the big city on the Metro (which I now know back to front and side to side) to stand in a 45 minute line outside the monstrous walls of the Vatican. This all occurred before 8am. Ouch. Once in the Vatican, we explored the different museums. Some we had to pass through quickly (much to my dismay), but we took a good look at all of the 'important ones' such as the Egyptian relics museum, the Sistine Chapel, Michaelangelo's frescoes and of course the room with the tapestry of Jesus whose eyes follow you where ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome December 28th 2010

For the first time this trip (please excuse any spelling mistakes, the keyboard is crazy here) I've been dumbstruck by a site; The Colloseum. Wow. We spent the entire day wandering the ruins of Ancient Rome: including the Roman Forum; the Pantheon; the Palatine and Capitoline Hills. It is astounding the think of the thousands of years these ruins have been laying about for, all that the city has been through: revolutions, change in rule, great wars... for them to still be standing is pretty damn remarkable really. We also chillaxed at the Trevi Fountain, wandered the back streets of Roma centrale, had coffee in a cute little Piazza and ate in a pizzeria that dated back a century. I was in constant awe of everthing I saw today and am so excited for what is ... read more

"Liz, organizzare tutti i parlare e di acquisto per me. Ok grazie si vede ciao." - Me. Rough translation: Liz, organise all of the speaking and buying for me. Okay thanks see you bye. So I survived Rome's infamous rail network, thanks to Liz. My plan was to wing it and plead ignorance... "There's a train, let's get on it...". But Liz was to the rescue with her epic language skills and organisation. I effectively told off a man on a segway "You're rude, be polite!" and Leah was in control of all the documents. So far all predictions have come true: Liz is the Take Charge Girl, Leah is the Organisator and I am the Peace Keeper. Did I mention that it's a toasty -4*C here tonight? BRRRR!!!!!!! *Air conditioning on full ball* Anywho, we're ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai December 27th 2010

After an epic 15 hour flight from Sydney, I landed safe and sound in Dubai. The ENTIRE 15 hours was in darkness and squashed between two lovely ladies. I spent the time watching crappy movies such as "Diary of a Whimpy Kid" and "Avatar" and now feel thoroughly filmed out. I did get to watch the end of Band of Brothers and even watched the first four episodes of Dexter! Youàd be so proud of me Elyse!! Next trip is 6 hours to Rome and then the real fun begins xx Lex... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Port Macquarie December 20th 2010

Currently sitting on the balcony of our exec suite at Sails Resort in Port Macquarie. I've been itching to get here and make the most of the sun and the beach before braving the colds of winter. Beach every day, swim in the pool at twilight, indie shops to browse in at will, koalas, picking own strawberries... I love this place! It's also nice to spend a week with the fam, we do this every year and have done since we were all little tackers. SO for the rest of the week leading up to Christmas this is where I shall be... beach, pool, beach, pool, fish and chips, beach and then pool. Keen!! Until liftoff on Boxing Day, take care xx Lexinamunamanamunamina... read more
