Hi guys! Kate here. Well mom, it finally happened. Your doting daughter left something behind at a hostel...her glasses. Not sun, regular. Hah. I realized it this morning and panicked for awhile before calling the hostel. The guy at the hostel said they hadnt been turned in but he would look in the room we stayed in and let me know in awhile. When I called back he said he had good news, he found them in their case with the blue cleaning cloth. Bad news, I thought, I didnt have them in a case, I thought I just left them on the table. He tells me they are exactly how I described them...but in a case. Good enough for me, Ian and I left for Germany again, hah. It was only a 90 minute train ... read more

Hellloooo. Does anyone still read this? Haha, I know you do....I can see the page views. Anyways, today we went to Neuwichtenstein Castle...we lucked out actually because we were supposed to go yesterday but I thought Ian had my train pass on him and he didnt so we found out last minute as we were sitting on the train that we had to quickly get off. However, it was pouring rain yesterday and just happened to clear up for today! Yay! It was about a 30 minute hike uphill to the castle and my knee was hurting a bit so that sucked (its all better now, mom, dont worry!), but the scenery was gorgeous. After seeing the castle we hiked a little more to a bridge where the view was breathtaking. So it was totally gorgeous...but ... read more

Hello! We are typing to you from Munich, Germany! We left Prague yesterday and were definitely sad about it. The first night we were there we met Ryan, from Coronado! It was so refreshing to be able to make San Diego references and have them be understood by someone. Then we met a couple, Lera and Mike, who were from the Bay Area and it turns out they went to school at UC Davis with Ryan! Small world. Funny thing is, Lera went to Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA, which I always see on myspace when searching for MY Monte Vista. Weird! We hung out with them the first night and drank our absynth cocktails...absynth, lime, and sprite...yum! Then the next day we started a free walking tour with them and our guide was ... read more

Woo hoo so we are safe in Prague. I would use exclamation points but I cant figure them out. We got here around 2 pm yesterday and have met some really great friends that we walked around Prague with today. This city is so beautiful its great and our friends are great too. Okay well I have had like 3 bottles of wine tonight so this is hard to write but I love you all we will probably update next in Munich Germany. Insert exclamation point here. Love Kate... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Auschwitz July 8th 2008

First things first. We decided to stay at this hostel another night instead of taking a night train to Prague. It just rocks too much, and we will leave for Prague, Czech Republic, in the morning. Now onto more serious, less logistical writing. Today we visited Auschwitz concentration camp. It's Kate here, by the way, Ian will post too. We both want to type our own experiences because something like this is extremely moving, and no two people will feel the exact same way. Upon arriving, I felt a mixture of conflicting emotions. I was nervous, excited, scared, curious, and awkward. The area outside of the camp was actually quite beautiful with tall green trees. The day was beautiful too, bright blue skies with patches of fluffy white clouds. I couldn't help but think that it ... read more

Well, we went to the death camps today. I am not quite sure how to put all of this. I wasnt happy to be there, but sad. I didnt like being there one bit. Let me explain. Walking through Auschwitz wasnt like walking through a cemetery or a battlefield, it was in a league of its own. The place reeked of death even though there was no smell evident to my senses. Yet everything about the place told me that it was a bad place, an evil place. I felt this despite the hundreds of people around and the oddly beautiful day, it was a feeling ive never had before. i had a constant look of disgust on my face that i couldnt get off, i felt the need to scrub my hands if i touched ... read more

Just a quick note to say that this hostel is the best ever. We get free internet and free laundry. And a free welcome drink. And breakfast is delicious. Notice there is very little punctuation when I write, just letting you know its the keyboards...they are very confusing. Mom: Verona wasnt in our plans and I was bummed about it....so it definitely was luck/fate that it was the best place to stay to train to Milan the next morning!! Hope everyone's 4th of July was great! It passed by without much thought here. Dillon had bought an American flag in Lago del Garda but had already packed it so we didnt bust it out as originally planned. I miss you guys! I hope the "Fab 4" is having fun in Florida, and I miss my family/friends ... read more

Greetings from Poland!! We had such a great time in Dro these past few days. The day that we updated last was our free day, so to speak, we didnt see the family. We went to a lake called Largo del Garda which was gorgeous and ate some really yummy Indian food. The next day the three of us played poker on the balcony of the B and B and polished off two bottles of wine. Then we were picked up by the family and had the usual salami, bread, meat, and cheeses before we were whisked away to a little rock concert at a Sports Center. I think the entire town was there, aged 5 to 60, haha and it was a ton of fun! BTW Monique to answer your question, Ian and Dillon kept ... read more

Hi!! Just a quick note to let you know we are safe in Dro! It was really awkward at first, haha, the first people we met interrogated Ian and Dillon a little bit, haha they had to prove they were family by naming like a dozen people in different pictures, which is kinda difficult for them, haha. Everyone else is great and it turns out some of them were in San Diego over 10 years ago and they had 4 pictures from a family party and Ian and Dillon were in one! Haha so that sealed the deal, and was pretty cool. Its so beautiful here you all would love it. It is straight out of a movie, i swear. The family is amazing, we have never eaten so much in our lives. We are hurting ... read more
