Day 78 Not so up and at’em this morning, we had trouble getting our lazy ars*s out of bed as last night was a terrific storm, lightening, no rain but what I could only describe as a mini Cyclone. It was so humid I lay on the bed all night, at around 1.30am the wind was blowing right through the camper trailer and strangely enough the wind was really warm. The tent poles are rattling and the awning was blowing, I was sure Caroline was going to suggest I go out side and have a check around, she likes to do that to me in the middle of the night you know. We are staying on this fairly tiny Camp site in Forbes, a Big 4 at Lachlan view, by the river. We were asked to ... read more

DAY 77 (Week 11) We left Dubbo this morning, and had the option to go to Dubbo jail and have a look around, then on to have our challenge match of mini golf. We decided to skip the jail as we do need to ensure that we work within the budget we have set ourselves, it is easy to get carried away, so instead headed straight out of town to the mini golf course that is sited on the same piece of land as Dubbo Observatory, the tourist brochure said both were open, Friday Saturday and Sunday every week. We were both psyched resorting to our usual tactics of abuse and intimidation, neither was going to show any weakness, neither was prepared to loose. We arrived at the mini golf course and it was closed! I ... read more

Day 76 Up early showered and shaved, I am still persevering with my cut throat razor, and am getting the close shave I like, I haven’t cut off an ear or anything yet so all is going well. I don’t know what I am going to do when I run out of my stock of Taylor’s of Old Bond Street shaving cream, and alum block, I will have to find a supplier some where over here. It probably takes me three times longer to shave this way, but it just seems so worth it, we all have our little pleasantries that make us feel good. We had a light brecky and headed off to Taronga Zoo here in Dubbo, the weather was cool and cloudy so a good day to see animals active, we had heard ... read more

Day 75 We were as stiff as a skin heads boots today after our 12.5 kilometre walk. We went to bed last night exhausted, and I just couldn’t get comfortable as my shoulders ached. At around 1.00am Caroline said it had started to rain, and did I want to move the fridge that was plugged in to the mains. What she was really saying was, Andy get out of bed and move the fridge as it is raining. As soon as I got out of the swag, (Naked) I could not detect a single drop of rain from anywhere, but still being the dutiful husband I resited the fridge and got back in to the swag. Could I get comfortable, not a chance. Morning arrived and we both had slept through the dawn chorus, and didn’t ... read more

DAY 74 20th January 2009 I was up a 6.00am, out the swag, Instantly putting the kettle on. There were around 15 Kangaroos just milling around, as much as I wanted to watch them I needed to get on. The Camelbak, which is a ruck sack with a built in bladder that you put fluid in, had to be packed with first aid kits, camera, knife, survival equipment, and all the other paraphernalia for any eventuality. Caroline got out of the swag just after me, the tea was already done so she got down to making the sandwiches. Today we were going to walk in the national park up to the rock formation they call the Bread Knife. All this area was formed millions of years ago and the bread knife was formed by magma, squeezing ... read more

DAY 73 It was a warm enough night, I found myself pushing the sleeping bag out of the way as it was actually too warm. A good nights sleep if only a little strange for sleeping in the open, well almost anyway, just a mosquito net between the stars and us. We both woke up in the night when we heard an aeroplane fly overhead, Andy quickly went back to sleep but I stay awake listening to the noise of the insects. The dawn chorus was deafening, the shrill sound of the Kookaburra’s breaking into the easy morning silence. How could it be a dawn chorus? It was still dark. The loud raucous laughter of the Kookaburra is the countries most defining bird call, they vie with each other at dusk and dawn to advertise their ... read more

Day 72 Coonabarabran was a little jewel in this trip; it was a smashing little town that we really enjoyed. I have to say that the night star gazing, with Peter Starr was a memorable moment in my existence on the planet. The small campsite we were on “The John Oxley” was just great it all seemed to gel together. We had met 3 guys who were contractors (Riggers) working on huge mast for Vodafone, who are not really a big player over here, but they are increasing the network coverage. We had got taking to Peter, who was the site supervisor, a nice pleasant man, he was always good to talk to. His other site mates were Phil and Tim, two equally pleasant fella’s who we whiled away some time with. They were good enough ... read more

Day 71 Well, isn’t that the truth! It would seem that when you say to people “Have a good day” the quick response is that “Every day is a good day”. We have heard this many times before. Andy was up early to write up the blog from yesterday. I think he mentioned 6.00 but I was lucky enough to get a cup of tea at 7.00. I wanted to Skype the girls this morning while they were partying at Lynda’s. So it was down with the tea and out of the door and back to the Jolly Cauli for coffee and a bacon sandwich. We decided to stay another night in Coonabarabran, we both feel exhausted from the continual running around and not to mention the late night last night, what a great night though! ... read more

Day 70 We have been away 70 days today, and it’s gone in the blink of an eye, 10 weeks so far that’s just amazing. Coonabarabran is the Australian capital of Astronomy and we wanted to find out why, from my simplistic views we knew the night sky here was big and clear so today we were going to get amongst it. I had already booked us in for star gazing tonight, about 9 kilometres from town at the Warrumbungle Observatory, which is privately owned, we are both looking forward to it. As we were leaving this morning Caroline found a huge spider, just hiding, inside the folds of the trailer cover, obviously wanting to get out of the sun. This bloke was big, and ugly but I don’t think it was the venomous type. First ... read more

Day 69 This morning was scorching, all the windows were open on the trailer, I lay there somewhat comforted that I didn’t have to go to work, and could just enjoy the peace that we have been afforded. Still, I know that feeling wont last forever. Those thoughts of work have been periodically creeping in and out of my head, possibly on the level of worrying about it. Would we be able to find the sort of jobs we had back in the UK, with the levels of pay? I don’t know at this stage, but as we are entering deeper in to our adventure, travelling South and those thoughts, though real need to be set aside so we can truly enjoy our travels. We had every intention of staying another night at Narrabri, as it ... read more
