Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum April 7th 2006

Geo: 29.9334, 36.0665Met our new tour leader Rabbi and we drove to Wadi Rum. The largest nature reserve in Jordan. Had a jeep ride through the desert, which was heaps of fun, especially when he tried to overtake the other two jeeps. Stopped at a Bedouin tent and had some local tea which tasted really nice. Then had a short camel ride around the area. We then headed to Petra. On the way we saw lots of shepherds with their herds of goats. Arrived in Petra in time for sunset.... read more

Geo: 29.4045, 34.9758We had a 2am wake up call this morning, as we are going up Mt Sinai, which sounds like hard work. We began our walk at 3am, 5 minutes later I take the camel option- I wouldn't want the camels to get lazy and unfit!! The sky was beautiful and full of stars. The ride was really smooth and enjoyable in the dark. Passed lots of people walking up. It was getting cooler as I got higher up. On the way up I passed a small group with a lady lying on the ground- she didn't look too good. Wayne was trying to help, but couldn't do anything and kept walking. The ride was much better than walking in the dark and much more fun. The end of the ride was at the camel ... read more

Geo: 28.4434, 33.8852This morning we left Cairo in a minibus heading for the Sinai region. Am glad to leave this stinky, dirty city. We have a security guard travelling with us as there are no convoys to the Sinai. Which makes me feel quite safe- especially as he was asleep during most of the trip!!! Just passed a burnt out bus on the side of the road, otherwise lots of sand and power lines. Stopped for lunch- the group before us left most of their food- which said to us, don't order much. I had fries which should be safe as they are cooked in hot oil and were served on a tissue on a plate. Passed through a few Bedouin villages. Arrived at St Catherines monastery in time for dinner and off to bed early. ... read more

Geo: 29.1853, 30.7446Was woken by Tarek at 8.30am to get ready to get off the train. Went back to the Pharoah's Hotel, had a shower, then Shastra and I had lunch at Tikka Chicken- an Egyptian fast food chain. Then after our afternoon nap we caught a taxi to the Khan al Khalli market. This time we went to the tourist section and saw no hanging meat. We bought perfume and perfume bottles- home they make it back to Australia. That night the whole group went out for dinner. Most of the group kicked on, wasn't in the mood, so went back early. I am over Egyptian food- hope Jordanian food is better.... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Luxor April 3rd 2006

Geo: 24.9573, 31.9535We got up early and packed our bags- no more river boat. We crossed the Nile by motor boat. After a short walk we came to a group of donkeys. I was matched to a light grey one and helped on. Then it started to wander away from the rest of the group!! I kept my legs out to the side to try and balance myself- I didn't want to be the one who fell off the donkey. According to Tarek, there is always one who falls off. It was easy to steer it- pull left or right. We trotted down the road, cars and buses sped and tooted past us. I'm glad the donkeys didn't get scared. We then went through a village and crossed a busy road- with the assistance of the ... read more

Geo: 24.9573, 31.9535Mummy Tummy hit me this morning, it was not good, cramps and then the runs. Took some Immodium and went back to bed. I had to miss out on the walking tour of Luxor. When I did get up I sat on the sun deck, read magazines and went a bit pink. After a lunch of hot, cooked food, a few of us went to a cafe for a drink- they made a pretty good iced coffee. In the afternoon we travelled to Karnak temple by horse and carriage- it was really fun, especially when we overtook people from our group. This city has traffic lights and the horses obeyed them. Karnak temple was pretty huge, in one part there are 134 columns. It was built by Ramses II who loved himself and didn't ... read more

Geo: 24.1872, 32.4397Another early start with no chance of a sleep in, especially after a wake up call, banging on the door and my alarm. At 6.15am we got of the boat at Kom Ombo to see a temple of Sobek- a Greco-Roman temple of a local crocodile god. Got back on board for a sun deck breakfast as we cruised up the Nile. Had a nap and two hours later we were at Edfu. There we saw another temple of Horus- falcon headed son of Osiris. Took 200 years to finish. There we also saw two baby camels with fuzzy fur. Back on board for lunch and more cruising while reading trashy gossip magazines and getting some sun- all very relaxing.Late in the afternoon we docked at Luxor, this was the end of our cruising. ... read more

Geo: 22.7308, 30.8629Our wake-up call this morning was at 3am, I hate early mornings. We weren't allowed to be late, otherwise the convoy leaves without us and we miss out. 10 years ago tourists were shot by terrorists, so the only way to get there is to be in a convoy. Three hours later we arrived. I got quite a bit of sleep on the bus which was good. There are two huge temples here. Ramses II and Nefertitis- his favourite wife of 62. Both temples were built near the dam and in 1967 were moved up the hill to higher ground. One of the heads of Ramses fell off during an earthquake and they have left it on the ground. Nefertitis was built first and is much smaller than Ramses. Both were decorated 4,000 years ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Aswan March 30th 2006

Geo: 23.9698, 32.7945Finally got some sleep this morning on the train. The seats are great and comfortable, but I found it hard to fall asleep. Aswan seems like a small city, much cleaner, less hectic than Cairo, like it already. The porters took our bags to our hotel and we walked the two minute walk. Don't know how I'm going to learn how to carry my bag if others are keen to do it for me. Our hotel is beautiful, overlooking the Nile, which is blue here and not brown muck like in Cairo. It has a pool, hope I get around to getting in it. We had a quick tour of the town and had an Egyptian lunch as a group. It was yummy. Seven of us wandered through the market. Everything seemed to be ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Today was excellent. We drove to the Giza Pryamids. They are amazing. There are three large ones. The biggest one was closed, so we had the option to go into the 2nd largest one, which belonged to the pharaohs son. I was hesitant to go in. It is quite claustrophobic. The height at some sections is only 1.3m and its not very wide- quite cosy when they are people going in and out on the same steps. It was scary and hard to breath when I thought about all the stones above me. The pyramids are not hollow, like I thought they were. They were built 3,000 years ago and took 20 - 30 years to build. They started building the pyramid when the pharaoh started ruling. It took 100,000 workers to build them. ... read more
