Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Had to move to my new shared room this morning. Met my room mate, Shastra. We were glad to have met, as now we wouldn't have to walk around on our own. We decided to try the metro. Walked to the station and still got looks and noises. Metro is clean and was a good way to travel. The first carriage is reserved for women, which was good news for us. We got off at Coptic Cairo- the only area in Egpyt where there are 3 different religions practiced in the small area- Jewish, Muslim and Greek Orhtodox. Saw old churches and cemeteries. We then decided it would be nice to catch the local river bus back downtown. We tried to follow the LP map. We ended up off the beaten track and in ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Took a bit to get me motivated to leave my room. Finally did at 1.30pm. To save myself from being ripped off by taxi's decided to walk to the Eugptian Musuem. Five minutes of being outside I remembered why I was so reluctant to leave my room- pollution, it is disgusting. According to LP a day in Cairo is like smoking a packet of cigarettes and it is the 2nd most polluted city in the world after Mexico City- great! There are still heaps of men everywhere, I thought they would be working today. This museum is a big mess, stuff everywhere, lots of things in the dark, a few things are labelled, piles of dust on everything.- no smoking signs can be ignored- no touching means you can lean on statues- birds inside ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Had a sleep in, bit nervous about venturing out of my room. Maybe I'll hibernate for a few days until my tour starts. Was woken up by constant beeping- its going to drive me crazy. Got a taxi to the citadel. The cars here are bombs, full of dents and polluting the air. The 20 minute drive was an experience- but no need to worry, the driver had a seatbelt to wear- I didn't! Cairo seems very dirty, crazy traffic, lots of near misses, seems like half the buildings are about to crumble, too many men around- hopefully because it is a Sunday. Made it to the citadel okay. Egypt's rulers once lived here (among the dust and rubble?). There are three mosques here and building began in 1176. The main one attraction is ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Left Luton London airport and flew to Athens and landed in Cairo at 3am. Am glad I organised an airport transfer- that way no one hassled me for a taxi. On the way to the hotel I made a few initial observations about Cairo;- headlights on cars are optional- its compulsory to drive in more than one lane at once- you must beep very, very often, even if the road is empty- they are trying hard to keep this city clean, cleaners were out there picking up rubbish- there are a lot of armed security menMy hotel seems okay. I have a queen size bed- I love it and I'll be starfishing each night. Also got a TV which will be great once I learn Arabic!!... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Went to the British Musuem today. Saw some African art which was a change from lots of Egyptain and European art. I also saw lots of Asian pieces. Plenty of various gods and buddhas. There is a lot of Egyptian stuff here. Lots of preserved mummies. There were also mummified animals- cat, bird, crocodile, bull's head, baboon. Saw the Rosetta Stone which was very popular.... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Made the journey from my hotel to the airport while carrying my 16.5kg bag and changing metro lines twice without falling backwards while climbing stairs or collapsing. This is an achievement and now I know that I can travel with my backpack. I have come along way from not being able to do a lap of the billiard table!!... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097After a sleep in, I caught the bus to the Eiffel Tower to use the post office on the first level because they use a special stamp and I knew that they would know English. Paris looks really beautiful from up here and from down below. I felt much more comfortable at this level. Caught the bus to Pont Neuf for a cruise along the river. It was good but I wanted to go up the top but we weren't allowed to because of the high water level. It was a great way to see Paris- didn't have to worry about getting off at the right bus or metro stop. ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Headed to the Louvre today, didn't know what to expect from the most well known museum. Only waited 5 minutes to get in. Got an audio guide so that I could learn more about some of the works. Headed off to the Egyptian area first, which was huge!! The stuff here is so ancient, its hard to comprehend the age. Saw lots of coffins beautifully decorated inside and out. Saw a female mummy who was perfectly preserved. After viewing lots of Italian paintings including some Botochelli that were falling apart. I made it to the Da Vinci's Mona Lisa- where there was a large crowd. Seems to be quite a simple painting- overrated?. There were quite a few of Ruben's works, who I learnt about at uni. There was a whole room of Ruben's ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Sunny, blue sky, but still cold outside. Walked to the metro station to buy a ticket, there were no attendants so I used the ticket machine- which ate my credit card and didn't give me a ticket in return!! I was pissed off. Called mum and asked her to ring up the bank and cancel my card. Then headed to the Musee National du Moyen Age, which was full of heaps of old stuff. There was a room full of the 24 kings of Judah- all headless for some reason, I was amused. Saw beautiful wooden carvings. Then saw statues without arms and some missing arms and legs- they must have had some enemies long ago. Huge tapestries from the century, the one that a big deal was made over was the Lady and ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Had a sleep in this morning and then caught the bus to Sacre Couer. This area seemed a bit dodgy, but I did buy lots of cheap postcards. Sacre Couer sits on a hill, so I took the cable car up which was quite lazy as there weren't many steps at all. There was a great view of the city from here. The inside of the church has a beautiful mosaic ceiling. Mass had just started. There were lots of priests and nuns singing in French. I slowly climbed to the top of the dome, which is the 2nd highest point in Paris after the Eiffel Tower. My knees are sick and tired of stairs.... read more
