We have tickets today for Singapore Zoo and its River Safari. We have bought bulk tickets through the internet before we left Tenerife which covered these plus the Jurong Bird Park. Also includes the tram within the Zoo and the River Cruise and Amazon River Quest within the River Safari. Think we got 10% discount by buying in advance. We had heard nightmares about the journey up to the zoo, so were pleasantly surprised when all went according to plan. About an hour and a half after leaving the hotel we were walking into the River Safari. It was a short ride on the metro and a 40 minute local bus ride. The route through the various animals is well laid out so that you do not miss anything. At the top of the walk is ... read more

We had planned to have breakfast in Marina Bay Sands, but looks like this was destined not to happen. We had to leave the hotel before 9.00am to stand a reasonable chance of enjoying this. But when we got up at 7.00am and looked out of the window, it was raining really heavily. This did not stop till about 8.30am. We really do love tropical rain. We then decided we would head to Marina Bay Sands anyway and perhaps catch a coffee in their sky restaurant. Unfortunately, we got the metro stops confused and ended up a couple of miles away. We were unable to work out how to get back using the metro, so decided to walk instead. This took us through the gardens by the bay which was really interesting. We eventually arrived at ... read more

We are both feeling a little tired this morning, so are quite relieved we do not have much booked today. Just before we left Tenerife we heard, through Trip Advisor, about a food trail they do through the hawker centre in ION Orchard Mall. This is a free activity that looks to be sponsored by both the food stalls and the centre. Initially there were just the two of us, but we were later joined by a lady from Indonesia and her disabled son. Our host took us into the hawker centre and explained how many of the local and non-local foods are prepared, and in some instances were able to offer us a small sample. The guide was obviously very knowledgeable and the tour was very interesting and delicious. Think we will be eating very ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai September 20th 2015

When we started planning this trip, we were not aware how much there was to do in Dubai, both culturally and touristic. Because of this, we did not allow many days here and consequently, did not get to see everything that we wanted to. This is definitely a place we will be returning to. Dubai is a city of two halves. One half, nearer to the airport, is more local with the cheaper hotels and the souks. The other half, nearer to the marina is more touristic and business orientated. Both halves are nice and have their own attraction and characters. Dubai does not have to be expensive. If you venture away from the big hotels you can find some vey reasonably priced shops and restaurants. The Entertainer book helped us greatly whilst we were in ... read more

We were up early this morning, as we need to leave the hotel at 6.00 am for Dubai International airport. Check-out went very smoothly, and the changes agreed yesterday had been applied to the final invoice. When everything had been sorted the receptionist informed us that the manager had made a note on our account that next time we book with that hotel we will get complimentary upgraded to business class with access to the business lounge. Not that we need an incentive to come back to Dubai, but when we do, we will definitely be taking up their offer. We were also sent away with fresh fruit and a set of daily Dubai national newspapers. A very nice result overall. It shows what a hotel can do to avoid a nasty review on Trip Advisor. ... read more

We were supposed to be having an early start today, but having only having had a few hours sleep each, we cancelled our boat ride, and had a small lay in instead. On our way out of the hotel, we spoke with the girl on reception about the noise last night. Straight away she agreed to move us to another room which would be a business class room with complimentary access to the business lounge with free drinks and snacks included. She also agreed to provide us with a complementary lift to the airport for tomorrow morning. This was good for a ‘starter’ for our complaint. Then another lady joined the receptionist and took our details. Although we are happy with the extras offered so far, this has derailed our holiday plans a little, as today ... read more

This morning we went on the Yellow speed boat out of Dubai Marina. When we picked our current hotel, it was with this in mind, as today is Friday and there is no metro until 1pm today. Priyankara, our guide, was very good at keeping us informed of all the buildings we were passing on our route out of the marina and along the coast line. This man knew how to drive a speed boat. There were only eight of us on the boat, although it could comfortably have taken double that. When we got to the top of the Palms and to the Burj al Arab, (the only 7* hotel in the world) Pruyankara stopped the boat and took photos of each party on the boat. He has just earned himself a positive review on ... read more

When we were booking this trip, we had no idea what there was to do in Abu Dhabi. We were only going there to see Theresa´s sister. Once we had booked the flights and started looking into what to do, we realised that we did not have enough time here. Consequently, we tried to cover the more popular places during this trip with the knowledge that we will probably be making a return visit within the next couple of years and can spend more time here then. Most of our time during this visit was in the 4 and 5 star hotels around the city. We did not get a chance to see the older parts or any of the waterfront. We are very much looking forward to our next visit which will be longer giving ... read more

A lazy morning today while we packed up all our belongings ready for our trip back to Dubai. We left the hotel at about 11.30 and checkout went smoothly. We will miss this hotel and the great service we received. We are booked into the Radisson Blu in Dubai´s Media City for the next three nights of our holiday. We have been unable to find a good map of Dubai, so have downloaded some maps onto the tablet for our journey into this new hotel and into an area that we have not ventured before. Unfortunately, Dubai is also having a lot of building works done, and the maps we have downloaded have a lot of street names missing. Result was we went round in ever decreasing circles before finding the hotel. This took just under ... read more

After our slight rearrangement last night, we are off to Marina Mall this morning. Not too worried about the actual mall, but they have a sky tower above it that have some great views over Abu Dhabi. Mick suggested we should have a coffee here. When we looked at all the great cakes on offer, we each ordered piece of chocolate fudge cake each – bad mistake. The café rotates very slowly, so we took regular photos. Once we had finished our drinks and cakes, we walked the rest of the way around to get the complete set of photos. We had a 2pm booking at the 5* Emirates Palace next door to the mall for a very lavish afternoon tea. We drove to there about 1pm so that we had plenty of time to get ... read more
