This morning we headed to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Using a couple of the maps that were available we managed to get there no problem. Unfortunately, finding the parking was not so straight forward. We tried twice to get through the main gate, but were refused. It is very clear from the amount of various visible security that they are pretty worried about terrorism. We eventually found the smallest entry of all of them that led out into a huge car park that was still nearly empty at 9.30 in the morning. The mosque is a very grand elaborate building and can be seen from a long distance away. We knew that the dress code was very strict, but also know that they gave out abaya´s to borrow. Theresa decided that a black abaya would not ... read more

We spent a relaxing morning finishing off the packing and loading up the car for our journey. Our journey to Abu Dhabi first takes us all the way through the streets of Dubai. As we were on the old part of Dubai, this gave us a good opportunity to see some of the newer parts. After that it has just sand and barren land as far as the eyes could see. It was extremely hot during this journey. We had ample cold drinks on board but also stopped on the way for some refreshment too. Our route into Abu Dhabi took us past Yas Island (F1 circuit etc.) and convinced us that we should return and explore this some more. The hotel we have booked for our three nights here is the 4* Southern Sun which ... read more

Sunday in Dubai is a normal working day, so we are expecting everywhere to be a lot quieter today. We had planned that our first visit today was a tour around the only mosque in Dubai that we are allowed into. Unfortunately, we have slightly misunderstood where we were to go. Before our visit to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding yesterday, we knew exactly where we had to go. Unfortunately, whilst we were there yesterday they gave us a map with a mosque on it. However, there are many many mosques here. We assumed that this was in fact the mosque that did visits as it was the centre that organised them. We arrived at Al Fahidi metro station about 9am, and thinking that we only had a ten minute walk for our 10 am ... read more

This morning we visited the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding for their Saturday Brunch. The morning was run by two teenage local volunteers but with older locals on hand if needed. They gave us lots of local information about the culture and lifestyle of local Emirates. They also answered all the questions asked by the diners. After this we were all served coffee and dates. They explained that this is the local Emirate greeting. If you say no it will offend the host. The Arabic coffee was very strong but the added date encouraged most of us to have a second cup. After this, the main food was unwrapped and each dish was explained. We tried every dish on offer, and even went back for seconds of some of them. Although only warm, it was ... read more

When we were conducting our research for this holiday, we heard about the book of entertainer Vouchers. For Dubai this is actually two books full of buy one get one free vouchers for restaurants, attractions and other items. For the book, the price was £88.00. This came with a complementary Travel book, which we have also managed to use for a good hotel in Abu Dhabi. As most of the hotels are 5 or 4 stars, they work out too expensive for the other areas we are staying in. In United Arab Emirates (UAE) the weekend is Friday and Saturday. Friday is prayer day, so not a lot happens. The souks (local shopping centres) and any government buildings are shut. The metro underground remains closed until early afternoon too. As we had a long day travelling ... read more

We had a really early start today, as our plane to Dubai left Heathrow Airport at just gone 9am. The Hotel Hoppa bus arrived on time and we were taken into Heathrow at just gone 6am. We had heard lots of issues recently that people have apparently had with Emirates Airline so we made sure that none of our luggage exceeded their weight or size limits. No issues here, they did not even weigh the hand luggage which really surprised us. Although when we got to board the plane, there were many people with bigger bags than us, so maybe today they were not checking. We have never travelled with such a generous 30kgs stowed luggage allowance. Very lavish indeed. When we got to the boarding gate the plane was there waiting for us. The gigantic ... read more

We started the day off well with a very hearty breakfast bought as part of the meal deal last night. Think we have had good value for money out of this. We will be doing this again. With our original plans, we flew into Gatwick with EasyJet and then out of Heathrow with Emirates. We thought it would be more relaxing to take the bus between the two. So we caught a National Express bus from Gatwick to Heathrow and then a National Express Hoppa to one of the Premier Inns where we will sleep tonight. The National Express organiser at Gatwick Airport managed to get us onto an earlier bus, as we were early, as normal. We are always early or on time and never late. We now have time to relax and do a ... read more

On our original travel plans, we should have been arriving at Gatwick this afternoon on an EasyJet plane from Tenerife South. EasyJet were really excellent and refunded the fare for us on compassionate grounds. Unfortunately, last week we had to be in UK for George´s Mums funeral, so our holiday got extended by almost one week. Today we arrived at Gatwick Airport by hire car that we had picked up from Birmingham Airport last Wednesday. They gave the hire car a good inspection then we were pleased when they confirmed there was no damage. This is always a tense moment as we have had some bad experiences previously with UK car hire companies. As the car park in the Gatwick North Terminal is still shut because of ongoing structural issues, the car was returned to the ... read more

Our original plans were to start our holiday on Tuesday 8thSeptember, but George´s Mum sadly passed away last week, and we needed to be in England for the funeral tomorrow. The flights for our travel today have been extortionately expensive, so we are going to stay with Theresa´s sister until our planned start time, rather than trying to travel back home again. Our original flight on the 8th September was from Tenerife to London Gatwick, but all planes on that route were fully booked for today, so we flew Tenerife South to Birmingham instead using Monarch. We have not flown Monarch for many years and were both impressed with how clean and spacious the plane looked. Unfortunately, after being up in the air for just a few minutes the pilot spoke to the customers to advise ... read more

From time to time, we treat ourselves to a day out. Masca was one of the last found villages of Tenerife. It is nestled within the mountains towards the north west of the island. Masca is accessible by a very much cork screw windy road down into the ravine by car, or by foot down to the sea when there is a half hourly water taxi service to Los Gigantes. During one of our very first visits to Tenerife, we had hired a car and ventured towards Masca. Unfortunately, we had met a bus coming the other way on one of the very tight corner on the way up to the lookout over Masca, so had not ventured down into the village. We always promised ourselves that we would get to Masca one day. Today was ... read more
