Route: Vega de Valcarce - Biduedo. First of all, I need to apologize for an information I gave yesterday. We were not in Galicia as yet. There I arrived half way the ascend to O Cebreiro. Today was a nice but strenuous day. The ascend to O Cebreiro is long and steep. We climbed from 629 to 1350 m. The surroundings are beautiful and the fact that the sun was out made it just so more enjoyable. I had good company along the way, again of all kind of nationalities. Not earlier seen were a Cheque lady living in England and a Brazilian student living in Barcelona with whome I walked some time. Interesting people. At the same time, I came across a number of people I have been seeing in the last couple of days. ... read more

Route: Cacabelos - Vega de Valcarce. A beautifull day and a new panorama. After a night of heavy rain, the day resulted spectacular. Sun almost all day and a fast changing environment. I am officially in Galicia now. No more extensive fields, but rolling green hills. Very nice for a change. Met a whole new group of people (Danes, Canadians, Americans and a fellow Dutchman who has been on the road for de last 2 months) and a group of spanish people that I have seeing in the last couple of days.I walked 26 km in about 6.40 hours. 1 km more than was necessary because I left my walking sticks at a restaurant where I had coffee. Thought about it about half a km later. Not the ... read more

Another day an other experience. For the first time during this trip it really rained this morning, but in the end it lasted only a couple of hours and the skies clearedagain. When I am writing this, I have arrived at my destination for today and am now less than 200 kms from Santiago. Today was a short day just to see how the shoes and the buttock wereholding up. Both fine, thank you. After a great night sleep withoutpain, I took the road somewhat later than usual. Probably because of the time I almost walked the whole day on my own. I covered slightly over 24 kms in about 5 hours. The group that I have been walking with ... read more

Route: Rabanal del Camino - Molinaseca A long day. 27 km in about 6.30 hours. Starting out in the rain and mist. You have not heard me talk about rain until now. The rain was announced, but turned out to be lighter than predicted ( thank God). The day took us to the highest point of our journey. Leaving at 1.150m going up to 1.495m and after going down some 150 m, up to 1508 m and than straight down to 585 m over the most horrible stone paths. Going up was the best part and caused me little discomfort in my sensitive area. Going down nevertheless was a different story. I will post a picture on the blog of a part of the stone path. I give thanks to the Lord that he made me ... read more

Route: Astorga - Rabanal del Camino 3 weeks on the road, amazing. Interesting to think, as a fellow traveler pointed out to me, that in the Camino there are no obligations. The only real commitment is getting on the road and walk, nothing more than that. I wonder how that will be once I am back in Venezuela. Today a somewhat peculiar day. I have been suffering from a pain in a buttock, the right one for the people interested. I have had some assumptions on what it could be. The first one was shoes. The Hi Tech's I came with and that I changed yesterday, have lost all traction and my heels have been hurting like hell. The second thought was bad carrying of the backpack. Last night I noticed a large "morado" on my ... read more

Route: San Martin del Camino - Astorga A day that started still dark at 8.00am and cold (7C). Quite a wakening. This I had not bargained for and do not all the required cloths. My hands were really cold. I need to buy gloves and some other things in Astorga because tomorrow and the day thereafter we go higher and Astorga was this morning 2C with mist....Now with sun out it is a nice 15C. I walked 25 km in about 6.10 hours. The 4 km/hour seems to be more or less the average speed every day and as such, each calculation of distrance translates automatically into hours. 10 km to go is equal to 2.5 hours. This day could have perfect if it were not for a stretch of road of 6 km with pure ... read more

Route: León - San Martin del Camino A day with good points and bad ones. After a good night sleep I felt well rested and walked without any diffilties with my feet. The road was boring, most of day I walked next to the highway and I had to pass some 5 km through León. The weather was overcast all day with a very strong headwind. Temperature in the low teens at best, although some warmer than yesterday. Except for the first kilometeres, I virtually walked the whole 25 km in the 6 hours, alone. Not all that great. As I said, only the first part walked with companion, a young German that I met while trying to find my way out of León. We walked some 1,5 hours together had lunch and we left separately. ... read more

Route: Mansilla de las Mulas - León Little to report. A cold morning, but it improved when the sun came up. Predictions are that it will get colder as we go into Galicia. A short walk of 18 km to get my destination. Last nights stay at the albergue was not a big success. Slept bad and did not feel rested. Hope to pick up some sleep today at the nice hotel here in León. What kept me awake last night were thoughts of bedbugs. A lot of people have been complainig about this problem lately. León is a pretty town with a very nice historical centre. Went to dinner with a group of people (Irish, Norwegian, English) that I have known now for some time and ate something different from a pilgrims menu. Took advantage ... read more

Route: Calzadilla de los Hermanos - Mansilla de las Mulas A bit of a complicated day. A walk of about 17 km without coming to a village. Not sitting down regularly, thus walking too long, hurt my feet (blisters). Fortunately nothing serious, but annoying. We did relatively little distance (24) in too much time 6.30 hours. Part of road we walked today is part of the old roman road system. Parts are maintained as an historical monument and as such are ringfenced. Interesting, walking on historical grounds. Very little to share for the day except for a French lady lowering her pants to relieve herself right in front of a couple of elderly Spanish ladies who turned around to me throwing her hands in the air exclaiming "peregrinos" and looking at me in horror. The French ... read more

Route: Terradillos de los Templarios - Calzadilla de los Hermanillos A day dedicated to our beautiful granddaughters; may they all become great women (but don't grow up too fast). Already the 16th day. I have difficulties remembering the places I have slept the 15 days before. Names become a blurr. Today I arrived at the "world town" of Calzadilla de los Hermanillos and I am staying at the Casa del Cura. The mixture of the words Cura and Hermanillos make me somewhat nervous, but anyway (just kidding). The house apparently was occupied by the vicar in passed times. So I expect I can sleep at ease. There seems to be a fixed item in the names of the the villages I stay or walk through. In general they seem to have more letters in the name ... read more
