Europe » Montenegro » Kotor July 15th 2013

July 15 We chose Kotor because the photos of the bay looked extremely inviting, and also because of rich cultural heritage and a possibility to swim. We flew with JAT Airways from Beograd to Tivat, took a taxi to Kotor Old Town for 15 Euros (rather expensive for such a short distance – quite reachable by foot but there is a long tunnel through the mountain), and, having grasped a map at Tourist Information Centre, entered the fortress gates while following the printed hostel directions which proved helpful – our feet came directly to its door within no time and not a single deviation from the correct path. The old town immediately left a deep impression on me, it felt so cozy though narrow and with lots of outdoor cafes and crowds of tourists, but nevertheless, ... read more

Europe » Serbia » North » Novi Sad July 10th 2013

July 9, 2013 Initially I, of course, had great plans for a comprehensive Balkan trip, including the best places (mostly Unesco World Heritage Sites) in Serbia, Macedonia, Kotor, and Albania. The trip gradually boiled down to Serbia (Exit Festival in Novi Sad) and Kotor, with possible excursions to Dubrovnik in Croatia and Shkoder in Albania. Unlike the previous year, we’d not take the exhausting bus from Beograd to Montenegrin coast along the serpentine, but simply fly from Beograd to Kotor and back. Our (my and Vasily’s) second trip to Serbia and Montenegro was arranged somewhere in the end of March or beginning of April; we bought air tickets for a modest price and waited patiently. Alexey (my schoolmate) decided to join us later and would only stay with us in Serbia. This time we stayed one ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest July 5th 2013

My attention was first drawn (or rather not so) to Priozersk in 2011 when I went on a boat tour to Lake Ladoga. Priozersk is a starting point for water expeditions and also excursions to Konevets and Valaam Islands (I hope to visit them soon). The train station, on the left, faces the lake, while on the right stands the town itself. It is not easy to get lost there, but the way to the fortress is not short. The small town has at least one deserving sight for a person deeply interested in history of Russian North-West – Korela Fortress. It took me long to arrange the trip (simply finding a free day), though it’s so close by (145 kilometers). I went together with Vasily, a friend of mine, who came to Petersburg for a ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lausanne June 14th 2013

We took an early bus to Geneva, and it was mutually agreed that Luda would stay in Geneva and I’d go to Lausanne where my total stay was a little bit longer than one and a half hour, or two hours at best. I was rather exhausted by this time and did not want more sights, but simply get home and rest a bit. The price of the train ticket was crazy, but it can be afforded once in a year. The bus to Minsk would depart at 16.00 from Geneva Gare Routiere. Luda constantly repeated how much she liked Chamonix and the Evian Water! I am just now thinking that, if there were a couple of thousand spare Euros in my pocket, I’d still be there, climb Mont-Blanc (say, from June 15 to June 19), ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix June 10th 2013

June 10 I have visited Chamonix in February, and surely decided to return there in summer. I told Luda, we have to choose between Chamonix and Nice, which one do you prefer? She answered, let’s go to Chamonix. I replied, you’ll love the place. She did. It turned out that during our stay only two of the lifts would be working – Montenvers train and Aiguille du Midi lift. Others would start working from June 15, just after our leave. An unpleasant occurrence, but there were fewer people. Arrived in Genève, we wasted two whole hours in having a coffee and trying to find the baggage storage. The baggage storage within the station was out of service, and we asked an official for help. ‘It is between tracks number 4 and 5’. We were stupid enough ... read more

Europe » France » Picardy » Amiens June 7th 2013

I had bought a ticket to Amiens in advance. I wanted to go there to see the Amiens Cathedral, listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I had early departure (and cheap ticket) in the morning, but managed to have breakfast (it was scheduled at 7-30, I went there at some 7-20 or so); there was no milk and I had to wait about five minutes. The train to Amiens took an hour and twenty minutes and there were no cancellations or late departures as compared to Rouen. I walked without a map, saw an unusually tall and narrow building in front of the gare – it is called Tour Perret, a 27-storey residential skyscraper. I was looking for signs of the cathedral, and soon its arches showed up. The cathedral is the tallest of the classic ... read more

Europe » France » Picardy » Chantilly June 5th 2013

June 5 The name of Chantilly came to our notice during the previous visit in 2012. Back then, we wanted to go there but somehow our free day fell on Tuesday, when the castle was closed. Nevertheless, this time I had tickets in my pocket before leaving Russia. It took about 23 minutes from Gare du Nord to reach it. I think it is possible to combine the visit to Chantilly and Compiegne because they are on the same train line. In this entry, I will rely on web information to make the narration detailed. The castle is located about two kilometers from the train station. The trail crosses a large park, finally reaching the Chantilly racecourse. I saw a building, called Grandes Ecuries (the Great Stables), and erroneously considered it to be the castle. We ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Rouen June 4th 2013

I bought train tickets to Rouen for us in advance, but Luda was unable to accompany me because of sickness, and it was such a happy coincidence, as we'll shortly see. This time Luda made for me some sandwiches, which we found to be an excellent way of sustenance, tasty, cheap, and fast. The train was due to depart at 10.40 or so, but when I came to Gare St. Lazare and observed the information display, a feeling crept all over me that something went wrong, because there were captions “retard indefinit” – we can translate the second word, and deduce the meaning of the first one, ‘delayed indefinitely’: meaning that train would not depart for an unknown amount of time, maybe an hour, maybe two, maybe three… There were public address notifications delivered in French ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Chenonceaux June 3rd 2013

Perfect Way to Spend a Day I do not quite remember when the information about Loire Castles came to my notice. I know that I wanted to visit them (a couple) the previous year, and that this year I bought a guided bus tour to three Loire Castles with FranceTourisme. I chose the company because of the price, it was 110 Euros per person as compared to 170 Euros with Visitscope (tours in Russian). I supposed this tour would be in English, but the language did not matter too much. The Chateaux de la Loire are part of UNESCO World Heritage. There is a very long list of them, and it is, I guess, possible to comfortably visit 3-5 of them within a single day. If one has a car, or a bike, or a motorcycle, ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Le Bourget June 2nd 2013

The word ‘encore’ in English is defined as ‘a demand by an audience for an additional performance…’, while in French it means ‘more’, 'again’. Paris seems in demand for a billion additional performances. We decided to revisit Paris in 2013 for more Roland Garros games (I managed to secure only the women’s and men’s Finals pack for 200 Euros), while also planning to go to Chamonix (again! – referring to self, I wanted to show the magic place to Luda) and Nice, but the latter was discarded due to lack of time and funds. The preparation for the trip included buying a lot of train, bus, and plane tickets and booking accommodation in Paris (a hostel) and Chamonix (a three-star hotel, because I did not want any neighbours’ noise there). I also obtained a French Schengen ... read more
