I bought a ticket for the excursion to Staraya Ladoga in the Davranov travel agency, my second experience with this company. It cost 1200 rubles. We started at 9-00 in the morning from the bus stop near Gostiny Dvor. As I waited near the ticket booth, I heard a young girl (not from my group, but heading for Vyborg) complaining about the bus – she demanded to change the small Ford bus for a large one, because, she said, “I have nausea in small buses! You did promise a big bus when selling the ticket! There’s a long way, not a couple of minutes…” I felt sympathy for this girl, because I also have nausea in certain buses under certain circumstances, but on the other hand she sounded annoying. It’s not reasonable to provide a large ... read more

I desired to visit Ivangorod Fortress as soon as I saw it for the first time on June 14, 2012. Almost a year passed, I have fulfilled this ‘dream’. I found Davranov Travel agency offering day excursions to various places in the North-West, and the most interesting for me was the Fortresses of the North-West, including Koporye (of which I knew absolutely nothing), Jamburg (Kingisepp), and Ivangorod. I’m sure there are some possibilities of getting there by public transport, but they are by no means convenient (at least there is no good electric train, and the places are not located within walking distance from each other). Several weeks ago, I purchased a web-voucher for the excursion via their website for 1150 rubles, but that time they phoned me the day before and said the excursion was ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva February 11th 2013

From Chamonix, at 7 o’clock in the morning I went by bus to Genève. I was so happy to be finally away from the 17-person room and constantly talking guys (I don’t mind people talking at all, if I hear them not; my headphones failed, so I couldn’t silence the talking plugging music in my ears), and I was supposed to be in the Swiss city in two hours, but thanks to traffic congestion the bus arrived an hour late. Everybody descended at the airport, me being the only person going to the terminus. There was a great lot of snow everywhere and the bus driver even announced that the airport was closed. I was almost sure, remembering Lyon’s mild weather, that there would be no snow, and indeed there was not. Genève bus station is ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix February 8th 2013

8 February In the train, I almost fell asleep because did not sleep during the night. A certain distance away from Lyon, patches of snow started appearing and at last there was snow everywhere, but I saw no mountains yet because it was dark – but I felt them and was very anxious about how my skiing would go. The previous “mountain” skiing in Sigulda was a perfect exercise, of course, but it was just a low swell of the ground. Now, I am more than certain that I’d be a failure in Chamonix had I not skied previously in Sigulda. The accommodation (hostel, or sort of guest house) Chamoniard Volant is a bit off the centre but very close to the bus stop. On pure economic grounds, I booked the cheapest bed in 17-person room ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon February 7th 2013

Chamonix is located not far from Genève and Lyon, so it was only natural that I should visit both cities during this skiing temptation. The disadvantage of inexpensive flights is that sometimes they are late at night or early in the morning; I had to be at St. Petersburg airport at about 3 o’clock in the morning. The flight to Lyon was by Lufthansa via Munich. The check-in time approaching, a huge crowd gathered near the entrances, but soon it began dispersing as passengers were allowed to proceed to check-in and passport control. In the Munich airport, German authorities put a stamp in my passport though I really hoped that a transit flight would not involve a needless entry in the Shengen zone in Munich, but in Lyon I would get a French stamp. I believe ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Kaunas January 24th 2013

The next stop after Siauliai was Kaunas, some four hours by bus. I planned to visit Kaunas during the previous autumn visit, but changed my mind, and that was a correct decision, as I saw this time. I slept a good night at the hostel, checked out, and left my luggage at the bus station storeroom. It is located in a different building than the station itself. When I first read about Kaunas, I did not consider it very promising, because the Russian Wikipedia article about it is rather short. However, expectations were much exceeded. First, I saw the imposing Sv. Mykolo Arkangelo Church, reminding me of Beograd’s Hram Sv. Save (similarity in style and form, probably). I then immediately proceeded to the 1.6 km long Laisves Aleja where trees grow, pedestrians walk, benches are installed ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Siauliai January 23rd 2013

The only reason for my visit to Siauliai was to see the Hill of Crosses (Kryziu Kalnas) in the district of Domantai, 12 kilometers from the city, easily reached by scheduled bus in the direction of Joniskis. The day was all about buses, the first one taken from Sigulda to Riga, the second one in thirty minutes from Riga to Siauliai (a minibus). I bought the ticket via the Luxepress website. Everything everywhere on both sides of the highway was snowy. The third bus was the bus from Siauliai station to Domantai. I had some fifteen minutes before departure, asked in the inquiry window where the luggage storeroom is, and it looked more like a small office. The payment of 2 litas entitled me to storage until 7 o’clock in the evening. Near the Domantai bus ... read more

Europe » Latvia » Vidzeme Region » Sigulda January 21st 2013

21.01 I arrived to Riga by Ecolines at 10-30; the bus had wi-fi and power receptacles so I managed to use the computer for a while. I bought a bus ticket to Sigulda and, while driving there, saw most magnificent views of fir trees like brides clothed in luxurious fluffy snow-white wedding dresses, everything clear white, and the road looking like a long white tunnel. The weather was so excellent I looked forward to skiing – just imagine skiing among such beautiful firs and pines under a shining sun! As I walked to Livonija guest house I noticed the quiet filling the air, and only a rare car would break the silence or a still rarer person would pass me by. The population of Sigulda is about 10 thousand, if I remember it right. I hope ... read more

Europe » Estonia » Tallinn January 19th 2013

I visited Sigulda in autumn and fell in love with the place. Now, winter means snow, and snow means skiing, and skiing means …? Skiing is my favourite hobby since the late 1999 but lately I did not engage in it thoroughly. One thing leading to another, I found myself planning a trip to the mountains to try alpine skiing (to be undertook very soon), and then found out I needed at least to have a look at the skis, boots, etc, try and run several meters on them. The first decision was to go to a ski resort in the vicinity of St. Petersburg (there are several good ones, though certainly no mountains) during the New Year holidays, but on calculating the prices I discarded it off mercilessly. I do not remember how and when ... read more

Europe » Latvia » Riga Region » Riga December 1st 2012

This entry includes a text about our short stay in Riga on June 14: "It is all too simple. We took an Ecolines bus from Berlin to Riga. The bus turned out to be very convenient and there was even an attendant and we could order meals and drinks; but there were only several persons on this route. The trip took the whole day and we passed several cities and towns like Suwalki, Marijampole etc. On arriving to Riga, I had a feeling that it seemed very much like our own Russia, something remaining from the Soviet era. There was a 4-hour wait till the bus to St. Petersburg. I bought a map and we left the luggage at the station; there was Russian speech everywhere. I wanted to have a short walk seeing the main ... read more
