Pyatigorsk was the starting point of my trip to Mount Elbrus. My spirits, strangely, were not high before the journey. I had worked very hard for three days running after return from Paris and did not have a single spare second to buy the things needed for the mountain trekking, except that I bought a warm jacket in Paris and brought some other items from my hometown beforehand. I would quite literally go to the summit empty-handed but I hoped I’d manage to get things on the spot. I thought about going to Elbrus earlier and had to cancel the plans. The first time I planned to go there in August 2011 with a friend of mine, but decided to cancel it due to some reasons and the friend was very angry with me. But this ... read more

I should say bus traveling across Europe is a treat. On the one hand, they are so cheap. I’m going perhaps to try the Eurolines pass for 15 or 30 days next year. The only drawback is sleeping, but it is also quite a soluble issue if there are many vacant seats in the bus where one could stretch one’s legs or if you arrange short trips between different cities. On the other hand, distances are not very large (Imagine crossing Russia from end to end on a bus, or another large state) because European countries are not very large. We arrived to Berlin at 9 o’clock in the morning. Check in at the good Berolina hotel this time was at 13-00 so we had to go for Yet Another walk (the first time I indicated ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Giverny June 12th 2012

The most beautiful place I saw this year so far was definitely Giverny, to wit, Claude Monet’s house and gardens. The idea of visiting the house came unexpectedly – at first I planned a trip to Chantilly for me and Luda, but then I learned that they were closed on Tuesday – and it was our last day in the French capital. So, Chantilly was left aside for the time being. I browsed here and there and finally decided on Giverny. To get to Chantilly, one takes the train from Gare St. Lazare (we Russians are most often excited about European trains because they are quite different from our own ones) to Vernon and then the bus to Giverny. Bus departure time is synchronized with the arrival of trains and the road takes about 15 minutes, ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Fontainebleau June 11th 2012

I will try to reveal the splendor of Fontainebleau in a couple of sentences. We bought a guided tour starting at 8-30. It was a bit of a problem because the tennis game was put off for that very day due to the heavy rain (Djokovitch versus Nadal) and Luda was anxious to get in time back from the excursion. The guide said we’d be back just in time. During the drive, I noticed the sign of Porte d’Orleans metro station – that’d be our destination on the way back. The traffic into Paris was rather heavy and there seemed no end to cars. Le Chateau reminded me of St. Petersburg palaces in Gatchina, Pushkin, and Pavlovsk – quite similar splendor of the imperial luxury. Had the emperors been not so generous, there’d be fewer castles. ... read more

When I turn to Louvre, Giverny and Fontainebleau, I wish I were a good writer because these places require mastery of style and a rich vocabulary. What’s the use of writing about Louvre if one is not an art specialist or does not have an artistic mind? The description of any piece of art (sculpture, painting, fresco etc) is superfluous because one must see them for himself, because art is visual. Needless to say that photos of masterpieces are also quite irrelevant unless made in high quality and large format, but even that does not make them closer to the reality. Our guided tour of Louvre was scheduled at 10.15 in the morning and the guide spoke much (audio devices with headphones were provided to facilitate hearing, because crowds are roaming the museum) about Louvre history. ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 3rd 2012

June 3 We arrived at 9-00 in the morning to Paris Gallieni. I should note that I was not as much excited as during my first visit to Europe. Luda said she didn’t like the first views of Paris because the station was somewhat gloomy and dirty and also the weather. I said wait till you see the whole of it. Meanwhile, she liked Berlin very much and so did I. We reached Aloha hostel quickly and check-in was at 4 o’clock, which neither of us liked, though this was said in the booking; but this rule should somehow be abandoned and replaced. It is very good to clean rooms but it is not convenient at all. Though, travelers mainly come to hostels to sleep and rest and chat, so what does it matter; and what ... read more

In spring we decided to go to Madrid Open tennis tournament. The idea was vague and was quite suddenly replaced by the idea of going to Roland Garros. There was also an idea to visit Belgrade for Serbian Open. Luda wanted to see Novak Djokovitch. I would keep her company with great pleasure, though I do not know a single thing about tennis, but I’d be happy to see the places. Finally, it was firmly decided to get ready for Roland Garros. There were about two months for that, if not more. I bought a ticket, and then another, for the tournament (there were almost none of them for the main court). We applied to the France Visa Centre for visas and then happened a magical thing for me – I applied for a two-week single ... read more

I decided to visit Tikhvin because of the same reason I went to Tver. I had a full day off. I bought the train tickets the day before departure. It takes about 3.5 hours to get there. I departed at 10 o’clock and returned at half past nine in the evening. By the way, now I’m staying in the very centre of St. Petersburg, in a small hotel. It’s so convenient. There is a metro station and a cinema right across the door, and some other important places for me. In 2009, as I spent much time in St. Petersburg, I visited several places near it. One of them was Vyborg. I bought a map that time and still have it here. There is the map of Tikhvin included and I got really interested to see ... read more

Sometimes I get so bored with life I simply cannot stand it, but still I have to get up, cook food, translate various texts, look through the window, think, breathe, put the rubber ring on my tooth, read books, think about home, would-be home, past, present, future, etc, drink tea, write to my friends and what not. It’s too damned boring when the person you think most of the time often does not pay attention to your calls and has so much work we can’t even meet for 11 days, living in the same city (I wish she was not ill, to crown it all). As soon as I had my day of rest, I understood that not to get completely bored I had to go somewhere and do something. Money matters do not allow now ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Vologda September 30th 2011

Vologda is first mentioned in the chronicles as early as 1147. It’s a very old city. I decided to visit it after having a look at the map, being bored, and studying the area close to St. Petersburg. I’m now staying in St. Petersburg, if you didn’t know. To put it in a nutshell, Vologda is a city of churches and wooden buildings. Some of them are in excellent conditions and some require renovation. Vologda is all about churches and wooden buildings for me. I went there on a gloomy overcast day of September 30, taking a train from St. Petersburg, only a night’s trip of some 10-11 hours. The idea has settled in my mind to visit as many Russian cities and towns as I can before another ‘great’ trip abroad takes place. I have ... read more
