Again and once more I bought a guided tour with Pervye Linii agency to the town of Valdai. It can be reached by public transport (such as bus), but I'd rather have this comfortable one-day trip. Besides, I would require a taxi to reach the monastery, which was quite far from the town and could not be reached on foot. Could be, but not reasonable. The five-hour road to Valdai, with the second half of it being more picturesque than the first thanks to the gradually changing terrain , the plain transforming into hills, went smoothly and I enjoyed observing a lot of small crooked shabby houses along the road and the autumnal yellow dance of leaves. The guide had a peculiar manner of speech, as most of them do, but I did not listen to ... read more

Europe » Belarus October 10th 2013

10 October I have managed to plan a one-day visit to Belarusian Mir and Nesvizh Castles, but it dawned upon me in the course of planning that it was not advisable to visit both castles on the same day, unless I had a private car. It turned out my changing of the tickets for a 2-day visit was the optimal decision, because I managed to sleep, eat well and comfortably visit the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Belarus. I bought Ecolines bus tickets to Minsk and spent some 60 Euros for a night in Tourist Hotel. I chose this one because I and Luda had been there on 9 May 2011, and it included a breakfast. I chose it mainly because of proximity to the metro. I also bought two bus tickets from the Belarusian ... read more

Old text: Here are some new photos after my short trips to Pushkin, Lomonosov, Gatchina, and Zelenogorsk. Definitely those places are of much interest. Zelenogorsk I didn't see previously, so I can say that it's a wonderful place, looking like a resort. It's full of trees and greenery and has two interesting churches and generally the place is pleasing in all aspects. I have already written about Pushkin, Lomonosov and Gatchina. I had about 10 days off work in September and had nothing to do, so it was a good idea to revisit those places. In October I will go to some other interesting destinations near St. Petersburg. This time (30 May 2013) I add the photoes of Shlisselburg Fortress (Oreshek) where we went in 2011 in the company of three persons. The weather was not ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Vyborg September 29th 2013

I first visited Vyborg in the autumn of 2009, approximately at the same time as Veliky Novgorod. In 2013, the excursions repeated themselves, with the main difference being that in 2009 I went to the towns on my own, this year – with an agency, the already known Pervye Linii. The main reason I revisited these two towns wass to write entries for this website, because I have lost the previous photos, but, of course, I did indeed manage to see new things this time. It is a bit hard getting up so early in the morning, but I soon reached the departure point and again had a breakfast at McDonalds (near Vitebsky Train Station). In the bus I thought about many things, such as whether I’d like to travel by car. I do not drive, ... read more

A McDonalds breakfast and a green tea in the warm room is a good way to start the morning in some cases, when you arrive rather early and the excursion bus has not yet arrived. If you are served by a young fat lady you perhaps will think that a fast-food restaurant is not the best place for any overweight person even to approach. But first we have to return back to the autumn of 2009. Back then I visited Novgorod for the first time (it was cold late autumn), saw the Kremlin and lots of churches, and clumsily ‘stole’ another person’s meal at a café… I did not understand what I did, I simply took the food that was brought to the counter, though my own order would come next. The excursion of 2013 was ... read more

Look at the globe: Here it is, the Earth And on it, Bashkiria, No bigger than a leaf. Just one small birch leaf, One leaf on a tree. And the birch, the great Russia, Stands so green and tall. (poem by Mustai Karim. Translated by Arthur Shkarovsky) My life has been connected with Ufa since times immemorial, perhaps when I was seven or eight years old (let’s assume 1992-1993). Basically, there are three important cities in my life: Birsk, Ufa, and St. Petersburg. When I was a little child, mother took me and brother to the circus, of which I remember only taking photos on the clown’s lap. Our sister was too little back then. Also, my brother was having some medical treatment many years ago in a sanatorium, and I also remember visiting Ufa when ... read more

I bought the one-day excursion for me and Luda online from the website of Pervye Linii for 1190 Roubles ( I and Luda had separate places (there is no option to book certain seats from the website), she asked a person to change, the person refused saying ‘I don’t want to’, so we sat separately and I listened to music during the whole drive. I listened to almost nothing the guide was telling us, though, undoubtedly, her speech was interesting and full of details. The first stop on the itinerary was Pskov, where I have been a year ago. This time I listened to the guide’s story about the Kremlin, the cathedral remains, and other things. There (and in Pechory Monastery as well) we met quite a lot of small (2-3 persons) groups with a personal ... read more

21 August Pushkinskiye Gory is a settlement in the Pskov Region of Russia, with about five thousand dwellers. It has regular bus connections with St. Petersburg and can be reached in some 7-8 hours. The worthwhile sites are the Mikhailovskoye, Trigorskoye, and Petrovskoye homesteads and its memorial parks dedicated to the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, as well as Svyato-Uspensky Monastery with Pushkin's grave, lakes, Bugrovo mill and museum, and a lot of apple trees! The name of Pushkin is, perhaps, among the most well-known in Russia, the same as Lenin. I do not know about the perception of his works worldwide, but a titan of Russian literature he is. What I’m driving at is that I felt a need to go and see at least some of the places where the poet had been and ... read more

I first read about Staraya Russa a couple of years ago, did not find it much interesting, but now I actually realize how many of the small places in the vicinity are worth taking a glimpse at. I now have a list of about a dozen of such places. First, I bought a guided excursion with Davranov Travel but they cancelled it (I suppose because of the lack of tourists). In a week, I found another company offering excursions to Staraya Russa (about five Euros cheaper than Davranov's), Pervye Linii, paid 30 Euros (1190 roubles) and waited. I did not go to the office, but paid at the nearest Evroset Office via an automated payment machine to a Yandex Dengi account (the agency instructed me by telephone). The name of ‘Russa’ might actually spell very much ... read more

Europe » Finland » Southern Savonia July 27th 2013

Luda had been to the Finnish Lappeenranta for a shopping tour in July 2013 with Orienta-Tour Company. Among their offers at the website I found the one-day tour to Savonlinna, and immediately decided to go there sooner or later, because it had a Fortress. About two weeks ago I registered for the tour (no prepayment) and at 23-30 on July 27 arrived at the departure point (St. Petersburg, Chernaya Rechka metro station). There were dozens of people awaiting buses, one was already full and departed to Helsinki, came another one also for Helsinki, and the third one was to Savonlinna. A crowd of people rushed to it, hoping to get their seats as soon as possible, and in this haste I was among the losers, because I had a seat with my back in the direction ... read more
