Europe » Lithuania » Vilnius November 29th 2012

I flew from Rygge to Vilnius early in the morning, dozing a little while, the passengers nearby being somewhat noisy. Having landed, I at first stood waiting for the bus but then went to find the train station. You have to walk some 30 meters, the train came in 20 minutes; it consists only of two coaches and reaches the city in no time; ticket was bought from the fare collector. Weather was totally different from Oslo – there it was colder and drier, while here drizzling and misty. The hostel was very close to the train station, but its door bore the sign of its being shifted to another building nearby owing to repair (the booking said nothing about that, mark a shortcoming). I was met by a Russian-speaking girl and shown to the room. ... read more

Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo November 28th 2012

I made a lot of plans for this short journey. There initially were featured some other cities, but finally the plans took shape and everything was arranged. I lost some money on non-refundable air tickets and in future will plan better. I chose Oslo and Vilnius because of cheap flights, and Riga because it’s relatively near to St. Petersburg. I’ve seen a bit of Riga in summer and was anxious to return for a more complete impression. While the previous trip to Stockholm was 100% pre-planned and about 95% fulfilled according to plan, this 5-day experience was not planned as regards what to see and what to do, I was unaware of what Oslo and Vilnius had to offer. Somewhere at the back of my mind, though, the “word” Sigulda stood emphasized (I had a vague ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Stockholm County » Stockholm October 9th 2012

October 8 Perhaps I went to Stockholm compelled by some hidden attractive force of this city, because, first of all, I've already been there though seen little, and secondly, I might have chosen other options of flying from Tallinn with Ryanair such as Bremen, Dusseldorf or Frankfurt (not Oslo, because that’s a different plan already). The price was as low as one could imagine and I bought the ticket without hesitation; though, adding up the cost of bus to Tallinn, the cost of overnight stay in Tallinn, and the cost of bus from Skavsta to Stockholm I suspect there could have been cheaper options of getting to Stockholm such as via Riga with airBaltic, or maybe even from Helsinki. The subjunctive mood set aside, I state that I bought Swedish kronor in advance and the Flygbussarna ... read more

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Pskov September 26th 2012

Perhaps, to understand Russia better it is such old towns as Pskov that one should visit. It was first mentioned in the chronicles in 903 and is one of the oldest Russian towns. The past of the town is rather glorious, it underwent attacks by different nations, if you care to learn more about it, defended itself and flourished. I first thought of visiting Pskov as far back as 2009, and also planned to see it in 2011 several times, but only now I fulfilled my dream. By the way I did not go to see the Estonian Narva as I planned, purely due to my mistake of purchasing tickets with a too early departure time. I’ll see Narva on a day trip next time. The worst thing about this day trip was getting up at ... read more

Europe » Estonia » Tallinn September 10th 2012

Sightseeing is prohibited! This amazing phrase revealed itself on the website of UK Visa Department among the rules for transit visitors as I was industriously looking for information about transit and tourist visas for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, upon suddenly learning that Russian nationals were bestowed with the right to pass UK in transit without a visa for 24 hours, the so-called visa concession. I got much excited about the prospect to visit London, no matter for what duration. Also, I’d never guess the possible cheap cost of getting to London; but that’s a matter left now aside for some distant future, since I don’t like the uncertainty of this visa concession and, taking into consideration the relatively simple list of visa documents, I’ll go there in nearest future on a ... read more

Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki July 27th 2012

While waiting for the trip to Helsinki Summersound Festival, I also decided to see Suomenlinna fortress and looked up information about it. The Unesco World Heritage list came to the fore and so I had an idea that the aim of my trips could be to see all the almost a thousand sites (enough for my lifetime, I guess, if not for several ones). It is true that I have already seen a lot of them, such as St. Petersburg, Kazan Kremlin, Yaroslavl City centre, Altai Mountains, Moscow Kremlin and Red Square, Riga centre, Baku Icheri Sheher and some others. But later I realized that I’ll have to be selective about the sites, because, for instance, not all sites could be easily accessible and imagine how much money would that require. Helsinki Summersound Festival was all ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Budva July 17th 2012

Many people would wonder what was the design behind going to the Adriatic seaside for mere 24 hours… I cannot really explain, but now that I’ve seen the place I’ll go there again for a longer period. Montenegro is a small country but it has two things I like most – sea and mountains. I departed from Novi Sad (“Sad” does not mean “gloomy” here, it means a “garden”) at 7 in the morning and the bus drove very slowly that’s why I came late for our bus to Budva at 8.30. The anxious Vasia was waiting for me at the departure platform but I was quite calm because there would be a bus in just four hours. They refunded our money save a 300-Dinar deduction and we bought new tickets. Beware, the cashier could not ... read more

Europe » Serbia » North » Novi Sad July 12th 2012

12/07 I knew that I’d return to Exit this year and I bought the ticket already in April. Four days of extreme pleasure do not happen always. This time, though, I felt much better during the night and almost didn’t get tired and danced much less; generally, I spent less time at the festival, but that does not mean that I disliked it or anything of the kind. I just rested more. As always happens during my short trips, I had to make certain translations, so the pattern of the stay in Novi Sad was translate – dance – sleep – eat – translate – sleep – dance – sleep – eat – translate etc… This time I stayed in student dormitory Bajic alone in the room, because the second man moved out of the room ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Podgorica July 11th 2012

When I was planning the trip to Exit in Novi Sad, Serbia, I decided that it’d be nice to have a couple of days in the neighbouring Montenegro on the seaside. I shared my thoughts with Vasia, a friend of mine, and he suggested joining me on the trip. The thing is, I found the very cheap air tickets to Beograd via Montenegro, less than 200 Euro both ways from Moscow, though with 2 transfers (in Podgorica and Tivat), and the early morning departure was a bit inconvenient (we had to sleep at the airports). But now, as I’m putting down the experiences, I feel complete satisfaction. Exit was perfect, and Budva was perfect. To begin with, a brief account of Podgorica, the largest city of Montenegro. I’d perhaps say that a traveler has nothing to ... read more

Europe » Russia » South » Caucasus » Mt. Elbrus June 20th 2012

This entry I’m really proud of though from a professional alpinist’s point of view Elbrus might seem a mere trifle. It takes so much time to compose my thoughts and write it all down though I made brief notes during the trek. I bought the trek with a Ukrainian company for 350 Euros and our group included only Belarusian and Ukrainian citizens, I was the only one from Russia. We met in Pyatigorsk on the 20th of June and the small bus took us to Elbrus village where Elbrus treks and summiting usually begins. The road took about three hours. The guide, Maxim, was a professional alpinist; there were also two other alpinists, one a guide (Alexander) and the other a friend of Maxim (Alexey) who joined our group out of the desire to check his ... read more
