Exit 7-10 July 2011, Serbia Novi Sad It so happens that I mostly do not manage to write a complete story about a trip during or after it, and when it comes to the task I simply want to do away with it as quickly as possible. It is not that I do not like writing about trips. Let’s get, though, straight to the point. Exit Festival is, without any flattery, the best dance event I ever visited. There is little to relate since my 4 days were passed according to the same simple scheme: party – sleep – translate – eat – party etc. 7 July While staying in Beograde, I wanted to do some translation in the morning, but failed, slept until the checkout time. I walked to the bus station and bought a ... read more

I quarreled a bit with the girl just the day before leaving for Beograde. My spirits were very low. I did not want to go anywhere and to do anything. My train was leaving almost at midnight. The pleasant thing was my short walk on the Nevsky Prospect just before leaving. When I arrived to Moscow I felt still sleepy and gloomy due to the lack of sleep. I was falling asleep all the morning before the flight. We had very shaky landing in Beograde, due to the clouds, perhaps. I was getting more excited little by little. I arrived to Belgrade and took a city map at the information desk. It was necessary to take the bus to the city centre. I asked the bus driver for information, showing him the map and the required ... read more

11/06-13/06 I had a terrible time, working all days. It was getting too hard on me, I felt depressed and gloomy and tired, having not enough sleep. Work is good, but health is better. So I had to force myself to have some days off, and this magic opportunity was presented by the Club Perekhod who organized a 3-day boat trip to Ladoga. I paid the money, and was happy. I’m currently staying in St. Petersburg. It’s a very good chance to explore the vicinities. When I was younger we used to have a boat and I would row it almost every day for pleasure and for other affairs like crossing the river before the bridge was built. I’ve grown up near the river so I feel a natural link with different water bodies. 11.06 The ... read more

They say that Moscow never sleeps. There is a popular Russian song “Ya lyublyu tebja, Moskvaaaa”. Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation, by the way. They also say that Moscow is not swayed by tears and that Moscow was not built in a day. I’ve never been for more than one day in Moscow. This is of course a city which needs no introduction and no advertising, so my story will be just an account of what and when I saw there, and my emotions. It’s too overwhelming and big a city for me to feel comfortable there. In St. Petersburg I feel much more comfortable and there were times when I felt St. Petersburg to be my second home. No doubt, I like Moscow’s sights, but generally the city looks very disordered, it ... read more

A long time ago I thought about writing a short piece about my native town, Birsk. Strictly speaking, it will not be a travel blog, because one does not travel to one’s hometown, but I think somebody, somewhere, sometime might be interested to look at a simple, old, non-sightseeing town in the Russian province close to the Urals. As usual, I am not planning to provide information of factual character. I will perhaps try to show the best things available in Birsk, not so much its buildings, because there are few old of them, but maybe the natural landscapes surrounding it. I suppose that a person, if his intention is travelling, will not go to Birsk to see the sights (though the town has some interesting old buildings and churches), but to see the nature and ... read more

Yesterday I had a lovely evening. Me and my girlfriend have decided on our relationship. Finally! I cannot describe how happy I am. There’s a life for us. I am simply going mad sometimes. Like a child in a fairytale land. This is what St. Petersburg brought into my life. Many hearty thanks. I’m drowning in lyricism and romantic ideas and expectations. I feel very incomplete about my blogs, there being no stories about St. Petersburg and Moscow. I have realized that I simply have to write something about Moscow, because a) it deserves it; b) I’ve been there many times, though always only within one day and on a way to some other place; c) some people might be interested to read my impressions about this city. Concerning St. Petersburg, it’s a different situation, because ... read more

Peterhof is a place perhaps everyone has heard about, that’s why I will not dwell on it for a very long time. I know that tourists coming to Russia would first of all visit Moscow and St. Petersburg, and visiting St. Petersburg almost certainly involves a day trip to Peterhof. When one comes to St. Petersburg House of Book on Nevsky Prospect, there are several shelves filled with books devoted to St. Petersburg and all other nearby countries. So, I have always said, don’t expect any matter-of-fact information from me. I have been several times, five, in Peterhof and now I would like to briefly recollect the main emotions experienced there. The first time was perhaps the most emotional – in summer 2007. I am not sure whether I was there alone or with a friend ... read more

It’s a long time since I wrote my last ‘report’ about a trip. Well, much has happened since my trip to Baku and I’ve managed to visit several places. Blogs will be appearing as soon as I write them. I spent three months with no particular purpose (or a purpose I don’t want to reveal) in St. Petersburg, made some trips to several places, and missed my home badly. Living in a hostel in St. Petersburg (being no traveler there) and comparing that to life in the rented apartment in 2007-2009, I understood that I don’t want to spend time in hostels in St. Petersburg (emphasizing, though, their low prices and other conveniences). Also, staying in St. Petersburg this season brought a girl on my mind (if I can call it ‘a renewed friendship’, meaning that ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Pokhara November 27th 2010

I finally decided, and am going to be firm in my desire, to write the complete blog about the Nepal travel. It occurred to me that the easiest way to start is to write a short piece about Pokhara; the blog about trek is too large to be completed by one effort, though I already have the draft text but it will take a certain amount of time to make it readable. I managed to delete the text about the first five days in Kathmandu, so Kathmandu will also be spoken about later. In the blog about the Annapurna Base Camp trek I dwell a little on Pokhara and my first impressions of it. Looking back now, I realize the trekking journey was somewhat incomplete, so to say, because I had a cold during all ten ... read more

Annapurna Base Camp trek 16-26 November 2010 It’s now time to immerse again into the beautiful land of Nepal and take the final effort to put down the long story about the ten day trek in the Himalayas to the Annapurna Base Camp arranged by Royal Mountain Travel, though the initially planned trip was to the Everest Base Camp. Much time has passed since the Nepal journey, but the thoughts and emotions are still lively. There might be no names of the villages, or persons, or rivers and other objects, but never mind, a map can guide you through the trek, and I will give the names which I remember. All the other Nepal experiences have been already described. Our team consisted of a guide, porter, an Australian, and myself. November 15 and 16 This day ... read more
