Asia » Nepal » Patan November 15th 2010

November 15, 2010 My initial idea was to have one single entry about Kathmandu, but now, looking through the photos, I see that Patan may be devoted a separate entry; this will make it easier and faster for me to complete the narrative about Nepal. I will also write several other separate entries to make perception of the whole story easier. The trip to Patan would not have occurred if weather in Lukla were fine on the morning of November 15. But, sadly, the weather was bad and the flights were cancelled and our trek to Everest Base Camp was to be changed for the Annapurna Base Camp. I think it was a very good substitute, though. After several hours of useless waiting and vain hopes at the Kathmandu domestic terminal, we went back to the ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu November 14th 2010

November 14 On this day I was to have a guided excursion to Boudhnath and Pashupatinath, the price of it was included into the cost of the trip. There was a guide for me and a car with driver. This day was the last day before the trek, so I was rather excited, if not very. It was warm in Kathmandu during all my stay. The sun shone most of the time, but in the evenings, when I went to the hotel’s third-floor open-air restaurant, it felt a bit chilly. Sitting there, waiting for the food, and looking at the airplanes flying by... I must confess the trip to Kathmandu and Annapurna Base Camp has been the most exciting so far. The excursion started at 9 o’clock in the morning and the two places were among ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu November 12th 2010

This narrative embraces the first three days of my stay in Kathmandu and the last few days I spent there after the trek. I did a good job – I’ve backed up in three different sources my texts and photos of the first 5 days in Nepal and was stupid enough to delete all the three back-ups. What a disappointment! I did want to have the text written there, in Nepal, without recollections, and now I’ll again have to sit and remember. It’s not that I don’t like recollecting, I’m sad because the text will be different. I’ve just posted short note about Pokhara, Patan and Kathmandu’s two religious sites, and now turn to Kathmandu again. I remember that my deleted texts were rather large, and emotions so fresh!.. I decided to go to Nepal all ... read more

Europe » Russia » Centre » Sergiyev Posad November 10th 2010

There is another short story about another short trip of mine, to a town called Sergiev Posad located in the vicinity of Moscow. The town is part of the famous Russian Gold Ring route and, due to its closeness to Moscow, I decided that I should visit it on November 10 to fill the time slot between my arrival from my hometown and the departure of my flight to a remote country. The idea was to leave the luggage in the luggage room, take the commuter train to Sergiev Posad, visit the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius, and there would still remain much time to spend at the airport. In October, I looked through an encyclopedia entitled Russian Cities, and made a mental note of Sergiev Posad among the preferable towns to visit ... read more

Europe » Russia » Centre » Yaroslavl October 15th 2010

October 15, 2010 In October I decided to visit Yaroslavl. It is only 12 hours by train from St. Petersburg. I came there early in the morning and left for St. Petersburg in the late evening. Here I present the highlights of the short trip, if there can be many highlights during only one day. Yaroslavl is also included in the Golden Ring Route. It is one thousand years old. It has a Kremlin, which is actually a former monastery, and a lot of different churches. There are some words to say about the sleep in the train – I didn’t sleep at all. Don’t know why. I was awakened by the steward about an hour an a half before reaching the city, and I got up, and after a very short while I fell asleep ... read more

Europe » Ukraine » Kiev » Chernobyl October 2nd 2010

When I tell somebody, especially a girl, that I’ve been to Chernobyl and Pripyat, there is immediately a reaction that, don’t I want to have children, and it’s always the same thing, as if I cannot think for myself and choose for myself and what do babies have to do with someone’s trip to Pripyat? I don’t even have a girlfriend, and doubt so much it’ll change in the nearest future, so should I care that much about unborn babies? If I am father to a mutant-baby, that’s another story, though… I’d rather not dwell on the scientific approach to the radiation dose one receives during the 4-5 hour stay in the Zone, because I do not know how to calculate all the stuff and neither I am able to use a dosimeter. But I do ... read more

Asia » Azerbaijan » Baku September 29th 2010

A simple title, isn’t it? A captive title is a prerequisite of interesting story, perhaps. Now let’s have a look at the Caspian Sea shore, at the city called Baku - the capital of Azerbaijan; the city of beautiful girls (but my eye will spot a beautiful girl anywhere), sand-coloured buildings, old fortress walls, crazy drivers, “crazy” prices and yet a warm and friendly atmosphere. Day one September 13 I am now sitting in my 80 Euro room in the Noah’s Arch Hotel in the very Heart of Baku’s Icheri Sheher. I feel very weary. This is the beginning of my 6-day stay in Azerbaijan’s capital and, judging by the first day, I’m going to enjoy myself during the whole stay. Before this, I spent a whole day in Nizhny Novgorod and also had a short ... read more

Europe » Russia » Urals » Chelyabinsk August 31st 2010

Not a long time has passed since my trip to Altai. Now, three weeks after we returned to our homes and lived up to the end of summer, having nice conversations in the evenings with Dasha (appears under the alias of D. in the Altai story) and dreaming of our return to the mountains, we have had our fun in Chelyabinsk. Ludochka (the second girl) was also there, so there were three of us. Chelyabinsk is not as old as other cities like Kazan or Nizhny Novgorod for examples. It’s sort of a diary, so I write about every little trip for me to remember; moreover, I might have said earlier that Samara was the beginning (better say, continuation) of my Russian cities tour; so Chelyabinsk is next. You had the opportunity to see Yekaterinburg in ... read more

Europe » Russia » Volga » Ufa August 25th 2010

My firm initial intention was to write no single word about the two trips to the mount of Iremel. However, thinking it over and having browsed through the photos, I came to the justified solution that it is unfair to omit these trips because, notwithstanding the fact of Rather Bad weather during them both, the experiences are worth sharing. I did not like to write about the trip only due to the reason that the weather was not quite excellent and I (we) did not see any panoramas. I like panoramas very much, specifically when on a mountain top. Given no panorama, I’m dissatisfied. Mount Iremel is about 1650 m high and is located in the Urals. It takes only four hours from Ufa to Station Vyazovaya by train. There are plenty of trains in that ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Altai Republic August 12th 2010

Foreword Altai is a mountain range in Russia. The mountains are not as high as the Himalayas, but they offer plenty of possibilities for tourism and active rest. You will find the general information about Altai somewhere in the Internet. My idea was to join an organized group of tourists on the route called “Kolban and Kuiguk: Route for Men of Spirit” (the word “men” means here human beings of both sexes); groups are invited there each year on different routes. Please visit www.altaystrannik.ru for more information. The site is in Russian. I had this idea somewhere in April or May. Why did I decide to go there? I found an advertisement about tourism on Altai in some group of the popular Russian social network “vkontakte”. I found it cheap and rather interesting, and almost at ... read more
