Geo: -8.51927, 115.263I only flew from one island to another (Java to Bali) yesterday, it was a 90min flight - and I crossed a time zone? Who knew, I guess that is one of the little things you miss when the announcements aren't made in English. Well, no worries, I don't have a meeting to get to or anything. I guess I'll just each lunch when I'm hungry...LOLOK, every wall of every building I've been in here in Ubud has a gecko on it, a real live gecko. I think of it now, because there are two scurrying about on the wall in front of me in this internet cafe / artists studio. Gotta love it, I said good night to the little one that was on my wall last night in my hotel. Good thing ... read more

Geo: -8.51927, 115.263Well I've arrived here safe and sound in Bali! My flight was delayed an hour leaving Jakarta, and I made a little video while I was waiting there to show y'all how gorgeous the airport is there. (I still haven't uploaded any pics or vids yet, I know, so I'll really try to upload some tomorrow. I just don't want to spend more than a few minutes at a computer!)My flight landed in the town of Denpasar and then it was a hour taxi ride up to Ubud up in the hills (away from the volcano Mom, but it isn't really active anyway). Ubud is SO quaint, it reminds me a little of Woodstock in upstate NY only the southeast Asian version. =) It's got a zillion little art studios all along the little ... read more

Geo: -6.18619, 106.806I'm nearly over my jet lag, but not quite. I'm still getting up at 6am and trying to stay awake past 8:30pm, I'm doing a little better every day. Indonesia is exactly 12 hours ahead of Boston/New York. So it's 11:15 AM on Sat the 16th here, and it's 11:15 PM on Friday the 15th there. Not an easy time change to get over. Maybe it was the Airborne's I took every few hours on the flights, but knock on wood, I've not gotten a cold from the traveling/time change/climate. This place it definitely tropical, it rains everyday, but only for 15minutes. I was out yesterday when one the downpours happened and it was like God opened up a floodgate, you can't believe how much water fell and how quickly it all happened. Everyone ... read more

Geo: -6.18619, 106.806Arrived safe & sound in Jakarta, Indonesia.. Though I can't say the flight from Taipei to Jakarta was as pleasant as the last one into Taipei. It was a madhouse getting on the plane, shoving and pushing, and it only got worse once we were all in an enclosed space. A man knocked me in the head with his suitcase while reaching OVER my head in order to cut me off to get his bag into the overhead space that I was lifting my bag into. It probably would have worked better if he weren't so much shorter than me, but it didn't stop him from getting the spot (even though there was no lack of overhead space for us all). Guess I'd better get my elbows into 'aggressive stance' for future airport endeavors ... read more

Geo: 25.0853, 121.562I found a free Internet cafe in the airport in Taipei, so I figured I'd kill a little bit of my layover and drop a quick note to let you know that I've arrived safely. Surprisingly the flight here was really great. I got a window seat, and the middle seat next to me was empty. We had a meal just after take off, then I took my sleeping pill and when I woke up 9 hours had gone by! Only 5 more to go! So I took another nap, and woke up 2 hours later. I stayed awake for the last three hours of the flight, had another meal, watched a little TV and here I am. The whole thing was much easier than I had prepped myself for. Interestingly, when the breakfast ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Ok, so I guess this is a little taste of the mistakes that'll make my trip more interesting. I bought my flight to Jakarta (via Taipei) on Air China last week, and miss-read the day/time. I my mind 10-Feb 00:15 meant I'd leave at midnight on Sunday night, but Oops, totally wrong. What that really reads is the flight leaving at midnight on Saturday night. So, my trip to the airport on Sunday was brief, as the flight was sold out. =(I took a cab back to Marc's totally bummed out. I had to call China air on monday morning to re-book, pay $100 and now I'm taking off at 00:15 on 13-Feb, which means I need to goto the airport on Tuesday night, not Wednesday Suz, not Wednesday.Ahh well, I did get to ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42So, I've adjusted my itinerary and plans since I first starting dreaming of this trip, of course. I initially planned on seeing the Himalayas (India/Nepal/Tibet) then when I starting learning of Round the World tickets options, that seemed like a really exciting (and cost saving option). But as I learned more, and planned what the itinerary would look like, it felt like I was trying to fit too much in - stretching the experience too thin. So, I pondered what I really wanted to accomplish at the onset, and got back to the basics. I'm limiting the scope of my travels, for this trip, to Asia. And I feel really great about it.I've uploaded a new map here, and am still planning for roughly 2-3 months on the road. I'm going to buy one ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42So, it was a busy week last week at Mimi & Papa's. Didn't get a chance to read my guidebooks at all, or do any more planning/thinking. The good news is my grandparents are pretty well settled into their new condo, and it's really great. Every box is unpacked, and put away in it's new place. The furniture is all laid out, and we even hung a few things on the walls already. It's a really great new place, they are the first to live in it, it's got huge windows lots of light, and a great view. Now that I'm back in the relative quiet of Marc & Pauline's house I'm sure I'll get right back into the planning/dreaming groove I was in.... read more

Geo: 42.3586, -71.0567So, slight detour/delay in my trip. My Grandmother fell and broke her leg over the holidays; she's been healing well, but slowly and is graduating from Physical Rehab Thursday. She couldn't manage the stairs at the old house, so my grandparents will be moving into a new condo with an elevator on Wednesday. Needless to say it'll be a pretty busy week for them with the move, and getting Mimi reacquainted back into normal life after three months in recovery. So, I'm going back east for a week to stay with them, help unpack, and help in general with the million of little things that'll inevitably need doing in getting settled.I'll just delay my departure for my trip by a week or so, and as a side bonus, I'll get my Visa application/passport into ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Here I am in Borders, immersed in this very American scene, enjoying my latte and pouring over the pile of guide books I've collected on my table. I swear I have an addiction. I see a guidebook for some far off exotic and exceedingly foreign locale and I must have it...then I read it and I must go there. Is it possible to live childhood dreams? Can I really visit all these people and see all this culture I've dreamed of? This truly would be a life of privilege...Time really is the only currency of value. I can barely contain my excitement for what the next few months will bring. Later that day...How many epiphanies can a person have in one day? Has it been so long since I've stopped to reflect? How long ... read more
