Geo: 7.73889, 98.7716On Phi Phi, you are either out on a boat or in a lounger on the beach. There are no temples or historical sights here, nothing to do but have fun and relax. So today I booked a day on a Long Boat, the standard for chugging around the islands. We went to a bunch of different little islands, and coves, did a lot of snorkeling and swimming. Had lunch on the beach and literally visited 'The Beach'. The beach where the film (with Leo DiCaprio) was filmed. Koh Phi Phi is actually two islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Lei. Don is where the village is at, Lei is a nature reserve so only day trips are allowed. Lei is where the movie was filmed. The last few pictures of the series ... read more

Geo: 7.7314, 98.7891It's pretty easy to know people on this island. You just sit down anywhere and the person you end up next to is your buddy. I met these two Aussies from Perth, Sharon and Kelly, and then shortly after we were joined by Eric and Bill. They are Canadian soldiers stationed in Afghanistan on a 30 day R&R here in Thailand. The five of us drank at the Hippy Bar and then stumbled over to the Thai Boxing ring down the path. It was an interesting night. Bill ended up getting in the ring and well, you can see the pictures.... read more

Geo: 7.73889, 98.7716Today I had my first, in what I hope will be very few, travel days from hell.It was probably doomed from the start as my van picked me up from my hotel at 5am, no day can be that good with a start like that. The crux of the problem was that my destination, Koh Phi Phi Island, is remote. Really remote. No trains go near it. So you have to travel by car/van/bus. The van that got me from my hotel was actually really nice, it was oversized - more like a small bus - leather seats, A/C, driver had a decent CD collection. I had the front three seats to myself so as soon as we got going I layed down for another couple hours of sleep. Everyone else slept too. The driver ... read more

Geo: 5.36904, 100.264Pinang is a small island, and so is really a great example of small island life in Malaysia. It was colonialized, so the main square has all these great colonial administrative buildings in it. There are also a lot of colonial buildings that weren't kept up, it a pretty interesting sight as well.I stayed in a hostel in China Town that was an old colonial house. It was a really nice place. I rented a scooter for the four days I was on the island and got to really see a lot of it. The beaches of the north side became a daily visit for me. I met a nice British fellow who spends a few months a year on Penang, and he showed me around up in the hill towns. There were some really ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684Ok, so I've officially become a slacker. It's all these islands man, it's hot and sunny and who wants to sit in an internet cafe! I'm writing this three weeks after the fact, so we'll see what I remember. It's raining out, and it looks like it'll rain all day today, so maybe I'll get a little caught up on my blog today. =)I only spent three days in KL, it's a big city, the capital of Malaysia. And I'd just been in Singapore for a week, so two big cities in a row and even though this is SE Asia it felt a little bit too much like home and I was itching to get out of my comfort zone again. Today I went to the top of the KL Tower and got ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684I started my day with a visit to the Sri Mahamariaman Temple; it was a short walk from my hostel. I met a nice older man at the door who took it upon himself to show me around. =) As we reached the back of the temple, there was a gathering of folks all around a statue that was getting a bath of water & turmeric from a priest. Near the back of the group I started a conversation with a lady who was making candles to light after the bathing. She was making them from an inverted lime rind and a cotton wick (which she spun from a big ball) and then by pouring in a kind of butter they made from milk. She told me this was an important day for this ... read more

Geo: 1.28941, 103.85Changing countries again tomorrow. Singapore, maybe the smallest country ever, just a little island, has shown me it's highlights. I'm continuing north through Asia, and the next country up is Malaysia. I've decided to just hit Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, for two nights. Then continue north up to Thailand - which I'm really excited about. So Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it's always called: If you saw 'Entrapment' with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery, you'll remember them traversing a really high outdoor walkway, it breaking, then them pulling a batman on the outside of a twin skyscraper? Well thats the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. That's where I'm off to tomorrow. Geo: 1.28941, 103.85Tomorrow is my last day in Singapore, I bought my train ticket to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and I leave Monday morning. It's a 6 hour train ride, but the train looks pretty plush and I splurged on first class.
