Geo: 20.4816, 99.9383I have to admit, I've heard the term "golden triangle' used nearly everyplace I've been to; There's one in Australia, in India, in Kuala Lumpur, and even in the States, probably many more. This Southeast Asian Golden Triangle is defined by the borders of three countries where two rivers converge. Myanmar (Burma), Laos, and Thailand can all be seen at the same time when you are standing at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. What makes this triangle infamous are the drugs that pass through it. Most of the heroin circulating our world comes from Myanmar and has passed through this triangle.* The opium is grown by farmers up in Myanmar, brought by donkey caravan to refineries along the Thailand-Burma border, turned into heroine, transported across the border in Thailand, down to ... read more

Geo: 19.91, 99.83The Padaung people are actually from eastern Burma, close to the Thailand border. A few families of Padaung have settled temporarily as refugees in Thailand. They escaped from the Kaya State in Burma to Thailand in the mid 1900's. They belong to the Karenni sub-group of the Karen People, who are still fighting for their independence in Burma. Many though not all of the Padaung women wear brass rings (actually one long brass coil) around their necks which distort the growth of their collarbones and make them look as if they have long necks - which they don't. The brass coil doesn't actually stretch their necks but in fact squash the vertebrae and collar bones. A woman generally has about 20-25 rings or loops around her neck, they are first put on when the ... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98So I arrived in Chiang Mai on the 30th at about noon (my overnight train was delayed) and from then through today, June 8th, I've been chilling. Just chilling. Nine solid days of no sight seeing, no challenging my boundaries, no packing and carrying stuff, no big decisions on where and what to do next, no paperwork for permission to go wherever and do whatever, no coordination, no negotiation, no planning, no reading brochures, no stress, no nuthin'. I've been chilling by the pool, sleeping in, getting massages, watching movies in my air-conditioned room on HBO, getting room service, eating in the same handful of restaurants that are close to my hotel, and that's about it. On Friday I rented a scooter for an indefinite number of days and ventured out past my immediate ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Today I leave Bangkok..again. And I'll be back here..again. Bangkok is really the man hub for SE Asia, from it's airport you can easily go most anywhere in the world. So, on this outing I'm taking the overnight train up to a town called Chiang Mai. It's supposed to be a really great, chill, old village in the foothills of the Himalayas. Nice place to get some much needed R&R after Cambodia. I've spent the past couple of days getting ready for the move up there. I've gotten my laundry done, refilled the balance on my Mobile SIM card, just in case I can't do it up there, and went to the ATM. I'm not sure how rural this place is, so want to get all my necessities in order before I depart. I've ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Wat Pho, The Temple of the Reclining Buddha. The temple is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai Massage. Now one of my favorite things, for only $6/hr I confess I've indulged in twice weekly massages for the past three months. And let me say, I can now rotate my head farther around to both sides that I though humanly possible. I'm addicted, what'll I do when I have to leave here?!?!? Anyway, I digress.... This Reclining Buddha is really impressive, it's 150 feet (46 meters) long and 50 feet (15 meters) high. Unfortunately the building it's in in only a few feet wider and taller than the statue, rather like it's still in it's shipping crate. So you can't stand back from the statue to take it all in, and with a ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521The Grand Palace is actually a pretty sizable complex of buildings in the center of Bangkok. It was the official residence of the King from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. I visited the entire palace grounds in one morning, easily done no need for the two day pass. This Palace is definitely befitting royalty, it's got so much bling if you come here without sunglasses you'll probably need a doctors visit afterwards. Let's just say it's not understated. The Royal Temple is probably the coolest and most decorated building on the grounds, as you would expect. I think of all the palaces I've visited the place of worship is always the one that'll warrant the bulk of my memory card. Wat Phra Kaew, as the temple is called, houses the great Emerald ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521These photos speak for themselves, I visited a few more temples today. One that I've been to before, and a couple others that I hadn't. An unexpected bonus at Wat Bowon Niwet was the monks quarters being open to the public. I actually ended up spending a long time here, just walking around enjoying the atmosphere. There were monks all over the grounds, and I got so many smiles and bows I couldn't possibly recount them all. On a totally random note, the day after I visited these temples I woke up and my right knee was killing me. I mean it really hurt. I layed there rubbing it trying to think what I'd done to hurt it, I didn't fall...I was walking a lot on uneven ground, but why would only my right ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521So I'm back in Bangkok. You know all the guidebooks and blogs I read before this trip told me I'd end up in this city more than once. It's the hub to get most anywhere in Indochina, and here I am. So predictable. But I've been here before, and done most all of the things that I chucked on my 'must see/do in Bangkok' list. So what to do, hmmmm. I know! It's May 22nd and the new Indiana Jones is openening today!I'm heading off to the mall to see it first, before all'yall! Nya, nya. I can't wait, a whole two hours of understanding exactly what is going on. It'll be heaven! There is even a Dairy Queen at the MBK mall, so I'm going to get a Blizzard for the show. I'm luxuriating ... read more

Geo: 13.655, 102.565The photos speak for themselves, this trip was really not different at all from the trip into Cambodia. Except I knew what to expect this time. I hired a taxi from my hotel which got me to the border (6hours $15 US), and there I found a guy at a folding table outside the border office who sold me a ticket on the next bus back to Bangkok (5 hours $14US). I had 90 minutes to kill before the bus left so I went into one of the only buildings in town and wow, I was not in Kansas anymore. Inside the hotel was a huge lobby with crystal chandeliers and red carpeting. It was like a gaudy Vegas joint. And then I saw the gambling room. Who knew Poipet was a Cambodian Vegas? ... read more

Geo: 13.4691, 104.041There isn't a whole lot of night life in Siem Reap, really this town is filled with people getting up a dawn to go see the temples. After a full days touring in the hot sun most all of us are pretty spent by sunset. That being said we still have to eat. So the main thing to do in Siem Reap at night is to have dinner while watching a show. I did it almost every night. Then I collapsed in my nice air conditioned hotel room.Cambodian traditional dance has got a lot of similar elements to Indonesian and Thai dancing, the costumes, the Gamelan orchestra (though it sounds pretty different), the hyper-extended fingers, flexed feet (I'm so used to pointed toes it's still odd to see the opposite admired in dance), the ... read more
