Well I've arrived here safe and sound in Bali! My flight was delayed an hour leaving Jakarta, and I made a little video while I was waiting there to show y'all how gorgeous the airport is there. (I still haven't uploaded any pics or vids yet, I know, so I'll really try to upload some tomorrow. I just don't want to spend more than a few minutes at a computer!)
My flight landed in the town of Denpasar and then it was a hour taxi ride up to Ubud up in the hills (away from the volcano Mom, but it isn't really active anyway). Ubud is SO quaint, it reminds me a little of Woodstock in upstate NY only the southeast Asian version. =) It's got a zillion little art studios all along the little one-way, one-lane main drag. I only passed them quickly in the taxi (he didn't find my hotel on the first pass so I got a free tour of town) but I saw all kinds of of Hindu paintings, and wood and stone sculptures. Guess I'm going shopping! If any of you guys Google "Ubud Indonesia" and see any crafts you want, just send me an
email. I'll be happy to UPS stuff to you from here, it's worth the postage, this is a once in a&n bsp;lifetime kind of opportunity so take me up on it!
My taxi ride from Denpasar started just before sunset and we arrived here just as the last light was fading. We passed the most beautiful countryside on the way, countless rice patties, Hindu temples, and about a million people on scooters (I'm SO renting o ne). Words just can't describe how stunning this place is. I'm going to glue my camera to my hip for the next few days. I might need to stay in Ubud for a week or so to get all the shots I can. One the roadside on the way here, we passed a group of ladies walking on the side of the road all in gorgeous pastel silk dresses with lace sashes and belts, they all had woven bamboo baskets on their heads filled with cut fruits and flowers. They were heading to the Hindu stone temple up the road to give their offerings for the week. Everywhere you look there are little statues 3-6 feet tall (on most every corner) with little woven
baskets and flowers, fruit and incense burning. No wonder these folks are all smiles, they are living in paradise!
Ok, it's 8pm and I'm barely hanging on (this is the time I usually goto bed). I arrived in town, had some tea with my Guest House host KaDek, then he gave me a ride on the back of scooter into town (it's only a 10 minute walk but I guess he does that for all the ladies *blush*) I was just going to pick a restaurant for a quick bite before bed, but I saw this internet cafe and thought I'd let you know (Mom) that today's flight arrived safely. So I'm off to eat and sleep and I can't wait for tomorrow!!
Hey so a little request, can you guys drop a comment when you are here (even if it's just 'Hey Sue, read your post today'😉? I'd love some feedback to know who all is checking on me and if I'm giving too much or not enough detail, er just to know you are out there =) Thanks, and ttyl!!
