Bright and early before the sun was even close to rising we were up, dressed and ready to go. In the pitch black morning we shoved our faces with granola bars and bananas to prepare ourselves for our race. We weren’t the only early birds, there were a handful of other folks dressed to impress.Several of them were friends we had made the following day: Arlene, a lovely Irish gal running the half marathon and three Americans working with Pricenton in Asia who were running the 10k. Piling into two tuk tuks we headed out to Angkor Wat. I have to say for my first race ever I couldn’t have picked a cooler location. Tuk tuks were swarming the area, hundreds of them bringing their racers into the area. We chose to get there early so ... read more

As it turns out that my next adventure was going to be a 19 day excursion around Cambodia. Less than a week after being home from America a handful of my friends and I were headed across the border to explore one of our closest neighbors, Cambodia. I was excited, besides America this was the first trip out of the country I was taking.I hadn’t done any research and outside of the 10k that we were running I had no idea what was going to go down, luckily my friend Erica is on top of things like that and had a basic plan as to where and what we would be doing. We left Bangkok via train bright and early on a Friday. The train is magical simply because it cost just 40baht. Exhausted most of ... read more

For too brief a time I was heading back to America to visit my family. I never thought while I was here I was going to venture back home, but when my mom, aunt and brother could visit Thailand leaving behind my dad and other brother I was willing to make my own trek home to see them.Ok I wasn’t just willing I was uber excited. I had decided to head home in October for a number of reasons but the two biggest being Michael, my youngest brother, was turning 21 and my all time favorite holiday ever, Halloween, lured me home. True the fall weather was a bit horrifying, but I was slightly excited to wear a sweater again so it wasn’t to much of a set back to know I would be home when ... read more

In my time here in Thailand I have gone through a few changes. Starting my journey here 22 months ago I began with opening my eyes to food. I had stopped being a vegetarian in a way to integrate into my community even more. I had accepted greng jai as something I could never go against and thus ate anything and everything that was placed in front of me whether I wanted to or not. In my village I had stopped exercising because people feared that I shouldn’t go out on my own. Because of all of these factors I gained a lot of weight. It didn’t help that when my American friends and I got together we weren’t out searching for the tastiest salad but instead for pizza, fries, and any other unhealthy cheesy option ... read more

Although I was suppose to go with my friend Apple the year before to her hometown in Ubon, I flaked out to spend time with friends. This year around I decided to join her in on a trip to her families house as well as for the Candle Parade. I didn’t know much about the Candle Parade, ok to be honest I didn’t even know I was going to the Candle Parade, all I knew was that I was going to her families house. So bright and early (ok not that early because Apple hates waking up early) she came to pick me up and we headed into town. Here we hopped on a song taew that took us to Yasaton and then hopped on a bus to take us to Ubon. Once in Ubon we ... read more

I was so excited when the time came for my family to visit me out here in Thailand! I ventured into Bangkok not just to pick up my family but to also get my foot checked out. Yes, I had done something remarkably stupid several months ago, I tore a tendon in my foot and instead of getting it fixed played two tournaments on it. So now with it swollen and all tournaments finished for the year I decided it was about time to get the sucker checked out. After finding out that I would not need surgery BUT I would need to wear a boot, yes a knee high, plastic, suffocating, can't get wet or dirty boot, for 6 weeks I took a deep breath and wondered how exactly a trip to beaches and living ... read more

Although I was there for a very specific purpose, an English Camp, it didn’t stop me from enjoying the island. We were stationed at the National Park found outside of the “city” and it was simply beautiful. The beach was charming and the rooms set back in the woods, everywhere you turned a new critter was scurrying past you. A group of us were teaching over 100 kids English as well as a respect for the enviornment with programs like a beach clean up and ID this object which could be anything from a shell to a leaf to a seed pod of some sort. It was a really great way to mix the two and for myself it was probably the best English Camp I could be apart of. When we had a bit of ... read more

After over a year of being here in Thailand I was finally heading down South to the real beach. After spending some time in Bangkok, my friend Duffy and I headed down to Koh Phi Phi before we joined other volunteers with an English Camp. We headed out the night of a Friday and spent the entire evening on the bus headed down to the beach. Night buses are always rough for me, I struggle to sleep on them and if I succeed at all it is never a real sleep. Despite all this, I knew a beautiful beach awaited me so I had no complaints. Arriving bright and early we hopped off our bus and into a tuk tuk and were taken to the ferry where we grabbed some breakfast and ferried over. Once at ... read more

When camp was over most of us volunteers decided to spend the weekend at one more beach, Dton Sai. We left Koh Lanta by ferry, drove through the main land and then hopped aboard a longboat which took us out to Dton Sai beach. Here we grabbed extremely cheap bungalows and took to exploring. We were just spending the evening here and wanted to check the place out. Where as Koh Phi Phi was filled with partying farangs and Koh Lanta was a natural park with just Thai’s and us volunteers, Dton Sai was somewhere in the middle. True most of the people that scattered the island were also farangs, but they weren’t the ones to party all night long or at least not in the let’s get wasted way that Koh Phi Phi exudes. This ... read more

My Balat (boss) asked me if I would like to take a trip with her and her family and not one to say no to my Balat I gave a resounding yes to this adventure. I didn’t know what it was going to be like to travel with her and her family but her being one of my favorite people in the village I was sure it was going to be interesting. Now when she said we were going with her family I didn’t realize it meant her ENTIRE family. Bright and early she picked me up and brought me to her house (she doesn’t live in KuKaSing) and we loaded up her truck. Her mother and brother were driving seperately so it was just me, her sister, her sister’s daughter and Balat for the start ... read more
