This morning the CIEE Study Abroad students are headed on a weekend trip to Rottnest Island. We had to get up nice and early and meet in the parking lot to head on down to Fremantle. From Fremantle we have to grab a boat that is going to take us over to Rottnest Island. Once on the island, we immediately got suited up for our bikes that we are going to be taking around the island. Before heading out we grabbed a quick breakfast. When we finished eating we headed over to a little cabin were we had an introduction to the island and a quick bike safety talk. Yay for helmets! After learning how to be bike safe we headed out. The biking wasn't to bad until we hit the hills which were a bit ... read more

Day One: Off to Costa Rica! Today was spent traveling so there really isn't much to report. Me and two friends are headed on a ten day trip with Caravan Tours around Costa Rica. We flew out of Newark super early, landed in Georgia then headed on to Costa Rica. Here we were picked up by Caravan and brought to our hotel. I expect Costa Rica to be super warm but it was actually a bit chilly. We tried to hang out by the pool but it was too cold to stay down there for long. On top of that we all had to get together with the whole Caravan group. Pura Vida! is what we learned which is a local greeting that means Pure Life. We went over a few rules, met our tour guide ... read more

Africa » Uganda » Northern Region » Murchison Falls NP August 13th 2008

After our eleven hours in London the group of us headed off to our true destination Arua, Uganda. After a few hours on the plane we landed in AFRICA!! We grabbed our bags and met up with the family we would be spending our time with. John and Erica have been living here in Uganda for quite some time now. They picked us up in a big old van and we all loaded ourselves into it. Our first stop before our voyage could really take off was to stop at the "mall" and grab some food. The "mall" was really just a food store, but what I was really focused on where the awesome birds flying all around us. There were quite a few Marabou Storks hanging out all over the place and my main mission ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City August 11th 2008

So I am on my way to Uganda, but you can't go straight there so it turns out my group and I have an 11 hour layover in London, England. Now while some complained about such a layover, I found this a fantastic opportunity to take a quick look around and London and that is exactly what I did. We landed in London at 7 am, checked into a hotel, and then head out to explore. Although it was raining when we first left the airport, now as we leave our hotel it is actually quite beautiful out. We took the tube into the Time Square of London. Here we walked along the streets being total tourist taking pictures of everything. The red phone booths were a big hit with all of us. As we were ... read more

NIAGARA FALLS!!! I had never been and finally decided it was about time to go! It takes about 8 hours to get to up to Niagara and it did seem like the longest drive ever but it was worth it. We did have to wait at the border for a good amount of time now that they are checking passports. I found it funny that when we finally made it up the lady in the booth asked us where we were from, where we were staying, and if we had any weapons. Interesting third question, I thought. Once through I was excited! Out of the four of us who went up, I was the only one who had never been there before. Walking along the strip was so cool. They seemed to have the most random ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin May 24th 2007

Last but not least on my European adventure is Berlin, Germany. The group of us left Paris in a couchette and spent the night attempting to sleep. When we made it to Berlin we got to our apartment and put our stuff done. After days of hostel the apartment was pretty cool, we got the whole top floor to ourselves so its an interesting experiences. We decided to walk around Berlin so first we headed to Rosa Luxemburg and then walked to Alexanderplatz. Out of no where it seemed the weather changed from a beautiful spring day to a torrential down pour. We took shelter in a restaurant waiting for the rain to pass. After that we just walked around for a bit and what I noticed most was all the reconstuction. We were in what ... read more

Europe » France » Paris May 21st 2007

Paris! One of the most traveled cities in the world, filled with light, shopping, food and fun. Filled with must see sites and must visit museums one can stay weeks without seeing everything that needs to be seen. I stayed for three days and know that I only saw a small portion of Paris and want to go back to see the rest of it! Something that one must do while your in Paris is take a romantic boat cruise down the Seine River. You can see some beautiful sites while the whole city is lite up. At night you can see the Eiffel Tower sparkling (which in all honesty looks a bit tacky). The cruise is a wonderful introduction to a magical city. The first museum that my group headed to is the world famous ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich May 19th 2007

Our next stop was Munich, Germany. The train ride was not as beautiful as the one to Salzburg but at least it was shorter. Munich is a very happening place filled with shopping and good food. Our first stop lead us to the largest church in Bavaria, Frauenkirche. The Gothic style cathedral has two towers reaching 325 feet high. Hike up the south tower to get a spectacular view of the city. When you first enter the cathedral look down at the Devil’s Footstep. The footprint with a small hooked tail at the heel is legend to be where the devil once stood when the church was first built. The devil was making fun of the windowless church that he thought he stood in. But he was tricked, from where he stood he could see no ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg May 17th 2007

From Venice, Italy we took a train for several hours to Salzburg, Austria. The train ride was really gorgeous and went by faster than I thought. When we got into Salzburg we didn’t have to much time to explore. We put our stuff in the hotel and headed for dinner. As a vegetarian I found it a bit hard to find something to eat, most foods contained some form a meat and when the waitress didn't speak English I had NO idea how to ask for a meal without it. The next day is when we actually got to go around the city. It was a Sunday so a lot of the shops were closed, but as we traveled on there was what I can only describe as a flea market that we were able to ... read more
