(The panorama above is from the top of Hafelekar about 8,000 ft above Innsbruck. Also, please excuse the smudge in some of the pictures and video. It seems I got something on my camera lens while at Oktoberfest and I had to clean the lens each time I turned the camera on. I obviously didn't always remember to do this.) We started out for Innsbruck from Schwangau for what turned out to be over 2 hours of mountain driving through the Alps; many hairpin turns and elevation changes. It was a spectacular ride, though. The Alps may not be as high on average as the rockies, but they remind me more or the Teton Range, very jagged and steep---so beautiful. We arrived at our hotel, the Penz, and it was a very modern steel and glass ... read more

On Monday morning we started out for Innsbruck, our next destination. We planned our route to take us to the town of Schwangau in the Bavarian Alps. With Marilyn doing the driving, about 1/2 hour after leaving Munich, Jan brought up something about our passports. At that moment, Marilyn realized she may not have taken everything out of the safe at our hotel. She checked and she did have their passports and her international driving permit with her, but Dan thought he may have left one of his good watches in the safe. We pulled over to park along a street in a little town so Dan could go through the luggage to see if he had the watch with him. Uh oh, no watch! We said that we weren't too far down the road and ... read more

(Photos have been added to Onolzheim Entry Now..just click previous entry) With Dan & Marilyn off to Onolzheim, Isabel & Jens met us at our hotel to take us on a walking tour of Old Munich. Jens told us that Munich is really a young city, only about 500 years old.....nothing like most other European cities. Jens took us to the Augustiner restaurant for a traditional breakfast of weiswurst (white sausage), sweet mustard and pretzels. I've always loved pretzels, and I'm in pretzel heaven here. They are everywhere in sizes from about as big as your hand up to a foot and a half across. Nothing better than a stein of good German bier and a pretzel for me. The Augustiner is huge, beautiful and the oldest restaurant in Munich. We visited the Frauen Kirche, which ... read more

Marilyn's sister, Cheryl, researched and found out that their family, the Engelhardts, came from a small town near Crailsheim called Onolzheim. So, on Sunday, we decided to split up; Dan & Marilyn taking the car for the 2-1/2 hour drive to Onolzheim and Jan and I getting a tour of Munich from our new friend, Jens. Marilyn's story follows. Dan and I arrived in Onolzheim after a wondrous drive through the countryside of Germany north from Munchen. Onolzheim is a suburb outside of Crailsheim where my great, great, great Grandfather Joann George Engelhard was born in 1842. Onolzheim is a small berg set on a hillside with only one main Strasse and one restaurant "Kranfischer Rigi". We stopped in for a lunch of bratwurst and sauerkraut. The staff was warm and courteous helping us by looking ... read more

Months ago we were told that you did not need a ticket to get into a beer tent at Oktoberfest; just wait around for a table to open and then go in. Well, that may be true in the middle of the week at a normal Oktoberfest, but this is the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest and Saturday was opening day. About 2 months ago, we were told that it was now just about impossible to get into a tent without a reservation. That's when I started calling and working with a concierge at our Munich hotel, Simon. He said he would try to find something. About a week ago, he still had nothing and then 4 days ago, I got an email from him that he had a table for us in the Kafer Tent ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lausanne September 16th 2010

We started out from Stuttgart around 11:00 AM and headed south for our 4+ hour drive to the town of Lausanne which is on the southern side of Lake Geneva. Lausanne is in the French speaking part of Switzerland. About 1/4 of Switzerland is French speaking, 1/2 German, a small percentage Italian and the balance a local language. Lake Geneva is beautiful, with the Alps srrounding much of the lake. Unfortunately, the weather while we were there was overcast and hazy, somewhat muting the spectacular alpine views. The town center is an area with buildings dating to medieval times still in existence. The evening we arrived, we took a walk down to the Ouchy section of the city, which is the lakefront. We stopped at very nice little outdoor cafe, the MGM, and had a nice ... read more

Thanks to Marilyn's cell phone and trying numerous number combinations, we were able to reach Isabel to let her know that we were running late. She was shopping in downtown Stuttgart and I guess we didn't put her out too much. We arrived at our hotel a little after 7:00 and after checking in, took a taxi for the 10 minute ride to the Paulaner Restaurant where Isi met us and had the reservation. The Paulaner is an authentic German Restaurant with a large beer garden in front. I met Isabel (Isi) during my trip last year to Alaska in Glacier National Park in Montana. She was in the midst of her American vacation traveling from Chicago to Seattle. There were also some young people from Australia in our camping area and we all got to ... read more

As Riley on The Life of Riley used to say, "What a revoltin' development." Things don't always go as planned. Our plan for today was to drive to Rumbach, Germany, where Jan's family originated and then drive on to Stuttgart. Each leg of this trip was supposed to be about 2 hours driving time. We figured we'd get on the road about 10:00 AM and arrive in Stuttgart in the late afternoon. This was really the only day we had a deadline to meet. I had put Stuttgart on our itinerary months ago in order to meet a young person I met on my Alaska trip, Isabel, who lives near Stuttgart. The plan was to meet her at the hotel at 6:00 and go to dinner with her at 7:00. Dan and I hopped a taxi ... read more

After checking in at the hotel, we hopped a cab to the town center and started wandering around. During our meandering, we came upon a tent with a band playing inside. After asking at least 4 people what the party was, we finally found out it was an annual fair or kirmes. It turned out this was the last day of the 3 day event, but there were still some people partying pretty hard in the beer tent. The band turned out to be 2 guys with a guitar and keyboard playing both German and American songs. It was kind of funny hearing 2 German boys singing "I'm a Believer" by the Monkees. We had some fun trying to sing along with the rest of the crowd to one of the German songs. All we got ... read more

We were picked up this morning at our hotel in Frankfurt by our driver, Peter, in a VW van at 8:00 AM. It was about a 1-1/2 hour drive to Rudesheim, where we would board our cruise boat on the Rhine River. About halfway to Rudesheim, we entered the Rheingau area. Rheingau and the Rhine Valley is the wine growing area of Germany. There were vineyards for miles and miles and all along the Rhine during our cruise. This area is most famous for white wines. We arrived in Rudesheim a little early, so Peter drove us up to The Niederwalkkenkmal Monument overlooking the Rhine and the town. It was a lovely stop with great views. The Niederwalkkenmal Monument (pronunciation test when we get back!) commemorates the German victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War in ... read more
