The Luggage Search
Unfortunately--no watch! On Monday morning we started out for Innsbruck, our next destination. We planned our route to take us to the town of Schwangau in the Bavarian Alps.
With Marilyn doing the driving, about 1/2 hour after leaving Munich, Jan brought up something about our passports. At that moment, Marilyn realized she may not have taken everything out of the safe at our hotel. She checked and she did have their passports and her international driving permit with her, but Dan thought he may have left one of his good watches in the safe. We pulled over to park along a street in a little town so Dan could go through the luggage to see if he had the watch with him. Uh oh, no watch! We said that we weren't too far down the road and we could go back to the hotel to get the watch and whatever else was in the safe. Marilyn said that the papers weren't important, but we sure didn't want Dan to lose his watch. Marilyn called the hotel and shortly after the hotel called back telling her that they did have the watch and some papers from the safe. Marilyn decided that the
hotel should just mail the watch back to their home and we would continue on our journey.
Schwangau is where King Ludwig II built castles as one of his hobbies in the late 1800's. The most famous of them is callled Neuschwanstein. This castle is built high in the mountains and is just spectacular. It was Walt Disney's inspiration for Disneyland's enchanted castle. In Schwangau is another of Ludwig's castles, Hohenschwangau. Both of these castles are only a couple kilometers apart and along with the town of Schwangau make for an unbelievably beautiful place. Everywhere you looked was another gorgeous mountain vista.
We had lunch at a lovely outdoor cafe at a small hotel and debated on whether we would take a bus tour up to Neuschwanstein. We also saw horse carriages taking people up the mountain. We still had about a 2 hour drive through the mountains to get to Innsbruck and we didn't want to make the drive after dark. After lunch we checked on the horse carriage ride and decided to go up to the castle. It would be hard to imagine a more picturesque place. And the weather? It's been absolutely beautiful every day;
70-72 and sunny. The views from Neuschwanstein were wonderful and there were several hang gliders in the mountaintops making the scene even more interesting.
Many Germans are not terribly impressed with the Ludwig II castles because they are not too old, favoring the more medieval castles. Ludwig II was known as Mad King Ludwig. Evidently he was quite eccentric and near the end of his life he was like Howard Hughes, refusing to see any people. He even had a table in his dining room that lifted from the floor below so that he didn't even have to see his servants. Was he mad or rightfully fearful for his life? His death remains a mystery to this day. No one knows that his early passing was by his own hand or that of an assassin.
