It always amazes me how wonderful it is to completely change climates in 3-4 hours of travel. What an unbelievable country! It was -4F when we got up Friday morning and when we arrived in Fort Lauderdale at 11:30 AM, it was 85! This is our 6th annual winter getaway since my retirement when I promised Jan that if she could stand all the snowmobiling, I would take her away from the cold in the middle of the winter. This year it's Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key about halfway through the Florida Keys. 2 days ago, we were fighting the Blizzard of 2011, shoveling and blowing 4-5' drifts out of our driveway with Heather. Here's a link to those pics: Now......We just suck up the warmth and relax!... read more

Although the weather has been fantastic for the whole time, it's been gone-severe clear and in the 70's, the nights have been pretty chilly. Sunday night the low was in the mid 30's. So I figured I would hang around until the temperature warmed up a bit. Easy to do when you're comfortable, drinking coffee and eating sausage rolls. Jim had a conference call for work, but he decided to ride with me for a ways when it was time to go. We rode back to the Rogers airport. As I was riding there, following Jim, I was thinking how great it would be to just keep on riding with him. It would be great to be able to just head west with no particular destination or time frame. Maybe we'll be able to do that ... read more

After we arrived at Jim's house and I said my hellos to his wife Sherry and my nephew, Josh, we headed into town to check out the fest. The main part of the rally is on Dickson Street. Fayetteville is a college town. This is the home of the University of Arkansas, the Razorbacks. Dickson Street has lots of bars. Just what every college town needs. The place was rocking and rolling with hundreds of motorcycles parked along the street and thousands of people walking around. A lot of the bars had bands playing and you could hear them as you walked along. We checked out a couple of the motorcycle vendors on the street, of which there were beaucoup. We then headed down to the beer tent where the main stage was located. There were ... read more

(My apologies to Jim H. I should have called you about ths trip a long time ago, but I wasn't too sure if I would go here until I got back from Europe and I thought that would have been too short of notice.) I knew that if I took all two lane roads on this leg to Fayetteville, Arkansas, it would take me forever to get there so I took Interstate 44 for about 175 miles to Springfield, Missouri. At least Interstate 44 is pretty scenic with hills and curves. After getting off the interstate I would have about 175 more miles of riding two-lane highways through the Ozarks. Once again the weather was wonderful and the riding was a lot of fun. As I was riding the curves and hills of the Ozarks, I ... read more

I started on the road at 7:00 AM, even though I awoke at 4:00 AM. I'm still struggling with the time change from Europe. The weather forecast was unbelievably good every day for the next week along my route. It would be 70 degrees or so and sunny. I'm making a solo motorcycle trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Bikes, Blues & Barbecue Rally running through this weekend. My riding buddies couldn't make the trip. There are drawbacks to early retirement, such as having no retired friends to ride with me. My plan is to make my river run to the St. Louis area, basically following the Illinois River west and south to the Mississippi River and cross that, taking 2 lane roads as much as possible to O'Fallon, west of St. Louis. My son, Brett ... read more

When we ordered our very first beers in Frankfurt along the Main River, we noticed how the beer glass was rather unique. It turned out that almost everywhere we went the beer and beer glasses were different. There seem to be few, if any, beers that are sold across the nation, like in the USA. The breweries seem to be peculiar to cities and areas. Big Cities, like Munich or Stuttgart will have several brands. It was really interesting to try so many different biers-----Tough Assignment! Dan, Marilyn and Jan-Your assignment is to remember where we were when each of these beer pictures were taken. The prize???? How about a trip to Australia?!?! It was about a 3 hour drive from Salzburg to Vienna and this ride was much easier. Emily was on much better behavior! While Dan and I returned the rental car the day we arrived in Vienna, the girls did some research on what we should do the following day. They came up with some great ideas. We would take a 3 hour bus tour of Vienna which included a guided walking tour of Schonbrunn Palace on the outskirts of the city. In the evening, we were to attend a concert. Once again, out hotel was perfectly located in the center of old town Vienna. Old town is circled by a street called the Ringstrasse, which was built in the mid 1800's. Vienna in German is Wien (pronounced Veen, or as Jens told us, Vienna without ... read more

The Weisse Taube Hotel, in English The White Dove, is a very charming, old hotel. The building itself was built in 1365! It has been a hotel for over 200 years and has been operated by 4 generations of the same family; Bernhardt, our hardworking front desk man being the fourth. It was even bombed during WWII. We have had a variety of hotels, but this one was so charming. It has been renovated and is quite comfortable. It even has a lift. It may not have had all the amenities of our modern hotels, but we loved the history and charm of the place and staying in the middle of the Altstadt. After Dan & I walked back to the hotel, Jan & Marilyn were in the street waiting for us. It was time to ... read more

Click on the picture to the right and soon you'll see why it's relevant when you read this story) (Also, this story is a bit long, but not as long as the time we spent finding our hotel!!!) Our drive to Salzburg was about 3 hours and much of it very beautiful. Once we got into town though, it got real interesting. I mentioned previously that we had a GPS in the car and it was indispensable. I can't imagine how we would have driven all the miles we did without it, particularly in towns with the turns coming fast and furious and a tough time seeing and reading street signs. We got into the city of Salzburg following each of our trusty GPS' commands, turning wherever our little British Emily voice told us to turn. ... read more

A few weeks before we left on this trip we watched a couple travel videos by Rick Steves of PBS on Bavaria and Austria. In them he talked about summer luge rides in the Alps. We all were real interested in trying it if we could fit it in our travel. In Innsbruck, we searched the internet and asked the front desk person at our hotel about them to no avail. Nothing was coming up under luge, which is what Rick Steves called them. I finally found an article on the internet that referred to "sommerrodelbahn." Ahha! I searched under sommerrodelbahn and a bunch of sites jumped up on the computer screen. There were probably 15 of them all over the Alps. Sommerrodelbahns or summer toboggans are chutes or tracks on ski mountains that you ride ... read more
