We had a real nice Christmas and New Year holiday season with Brett & Megan coming up from St. Louis on Christmas Day, staying until the 27th. Heather had to work on Christmas, but she came in on 12/30 and will be here until the 7th. It sure is great to be able to spend this time with both of them and all the family. We're having some real winter weather here in the midwest so far and the snow we received at Christmas has stayed for a week so far and the ten day forecast says it's going to stay at least that much longer. That gave us the rare opportunity to ride snowmobiles locally for a change. Heather said she would like to ride snowmobiles while here, so I checked out the somewhat nearby ... read more

I got up early this morning to get over to Keweenaw Motorsports to pick up the new sled. Of course I had to drop off my machine for some minor maintenance that turned out to be a little more than minor. As a matter of fact, it's going to stay here through the holidays waiting for some parts. So, I'll be coming home with only Jan's new sled. I hope she let's me ride it! Oh, that's right. I rode it 60 miles today.....just to break it in and make sure it'll be good for Jan. It's a 2009 Skidoo MXZ Adrenaline 600 Etec----They sure have long names for these things today. They used to just be Panther or Blizzard in the old days. It was a beautiful, sunny day up here, just perfect with temps ... read more

Now to clear up any possible confusion about going to the Gay Bar. I haven't decided to go over to the other side. The sledders who ride up here know that the Gay Bar is just that: the bar in the town of Gay, MI. Gay is a tiny town that once had one of the many copper mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It's located on the eastern side of the peninsula right on Lake Superior. We received a couple of inches of snow in the morning and the trails were in perfect condition. The groomers were out on almost every trail and the trails were as good as they get. There were a lot of snomobilers here over the weeekend and I was concerned that they would have beat up the trails, but the groomers ... read more

I'm staying at the Ramada Inn in Hancock right across the bridge from Houghton for this trip because it is close to Keweenaw Motorsports. That's because I'll be picking up Jan's new snowmobile there Tuesday. It's a 2009 Skidoo MXZ 600 Etec. That's why I've got the 2007 Arctic Cat F8 for sale on Ebay. It's Sunday evening and I had a real nice uneventful trip here from home. Dry roads and clear weather. This is the first time in a number of years that there was actually snow cover all the way from home to here. It made me remember one of my adventure snowmobile trips that I never was able to do. When I was younger I wanted to ride a snow machine from Northern Illinois to the UP, but there was never a ... read more

When I decided to make this trip, I really wasn't sure how long I would stay. I thought maybe I'd leave Thursday. That would have given me 3 days of riding. Then as the snow began piling up, I told Sandy Krupp that I would leave Friday. On Thursday, with snow wrecking driving conditions and the forecast for it to continue to snow until Saturday morning, I asked Sandy Krupp if I could stay until Saturday morning. Too late; they were filled up for the weekend. The other places to stay in Twin Lakes were also booked. I guess that everyone in the Midwest saw the weather reports. So I asked Sandy to let me know if there were any cancellations and she called that afternoon to say that the Wyandotte Cabins had a cabin open ... read more

It's been snowing like crazy the past day and a half. As of this morning, I estimate we've gotten 20 inches of snow and it's still snowing. One of the girls here at the Parkview said they are supposed to get over 3 feet by Saturday. It's deep and beautiful. Still very few snowmobilers so I was breaking trail through about 2-1/2 feet of snow in a lot of places. My passenger side windshield wiper quit working, so I started out my day driving 23 miles up to Houghton and got it fixed at Keweenaw Automotive. So, after that little diversion, I started riding around 1:00 PM again. With all the new snow, I headed south and made a familiar loop for me. I rode 16 miles down to Mass City and gassed up there. I ... read more

Since the snow is thinner to the south, I decided to ride north Tuesday. I rode 28 miles up to Houghton to visit the guys at Keweenaw Motorsports and get a cup of coffee. They are a Skidoo dealer and really good guys. Dan, the service manager, has helped me several times when I had something wrong with one of the machines and got me back on the trails. Marty is the owner and I talked with him about news on the new machines. He told me that Skidoo is going to put their very advanced fuel injection system called Etec in the 800cc engine next year. They only have it available in the 600cc engines now. It is a real leap forward in 2 stroke engine technology. It produces a cleaner exhaust than 4 stroke ... read more

Typical of my most recent adventures, I got another late start to this day. I went to the Parkview for breakfast around 10:45 AM. By the time I unloaded my sleds it was damn near 1:00 PM. It was typical early season riding. At this time, the wet areas full of creeks haven't frozen yet so I got to do some wet stream crossings. The snow was very good and only a couple sleds are around so its not getting beaten up. I rode down Trail 13 toward Greenland for 20 miles before running into some very wet spots so I decided to turn around and head back north. The snow get quite a bit thinner 25 miles south of Twin Lakes. Theres supposed to be more snow north of here up to Copper Harbor, so ... read more

Well, my 10:00 AM departure estimate was off by 2 hours. I got going about noon. I'm getting ever lazier in the morning. 460 miles later, I'm in Twin Lakes. There's about 14" of snow on the ground and they're calling for more every day. They also have a winter storm forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday, expecting at least a foot of snow in that. I listened to almost all of Charles Kuralt's book after listening to the Bears game-WOO-HOO; Bears actually win a game! Listening to Charles Kuralt, I was once again reminded how travel is so much about the people you meet. I made up my mind that I'm going to take even more time to talk to more people on this trip. I've ridden the snow machines an awful lot of miles over the years ... read more

This weekend was supposed to be an overnight in downtown Chicago to celebrate my sister-in-law Kim and my 60th birthdays. Unfortunately, Jan's younger sister, Dawn came down with abdominal pain which the doctor thinks could be her gall bladder. Here's hoping it's something very minor. So, instead of a weekend of partying with Jan, her 2 sisters and the guys, I'm leaving a day earlier than my planned Monday departure. This will allow me to beat a forcecast light snow here for Sunday night into Monday. The worst part of beeing a snowmobile junkie is having to drive long distances in the winter with all of the crummy weather that comes with it. Fortunately, now being retired I don't push on in bad weather since I really have no deadlines to meet. It sure makes the ... read more
