Today's plan was to be a real tourist and see a few of the famous sights in Quebec City. One of them is the Ice Hotel. The Ice Hotel is located just north of Quebec City. Each winter they build a new hotel made of ice and snow, changing the layout, number of rooms and artwork in the ice and snow. Each spring the Ice Hotel melts and disappears. The cost of construction is about $3 million. It is approximately 35,000 sft. There are 36 suites and rooms in the hotel. The suites have different themes based on the artwork inside them. The artwork in the ice and in he snow walls is pretty amazing. I guess people actually stay here overnight, but there is no heat so I'm guessing they are pretty bundled up when ... read more

I arrived in Saint Raymond yesterday. The total trip was just about 1,000 miles from home. This is really pretty country here, very hilly and rural. And lots of snow! Originally I planned to ride from here to Riviere du Loup in the Gaspe Peninsula where the guided tour is going to start, but I stopped at this snowmobile dealer to pick up my 7 day Quebec trail permit ($180, ouch) and after going over the map with the guys at the dealership I found out that it would be about a 400+ km ride (around 250 miles). This, by myself, before starting a 1,200 mile tour on Sunday seemed like a bit much, so I've decided to drive the truck and trailer to Riviere du Loup. The people I've met so far have all been ... read more

Tomorrow I depart for my snowmobile tour of Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula. I'll be going on a professionally guided tour with a company called Bonvoyage Snow Adventures, run by Gary Pruitt. I will be trailering my sled trailer with the Old Burban 990 miles to Quebec City over the next 2 days. I will ride my sled alone from there to the town of Riviere du Loup in the Gaspe Peninsula south of the St. Lawrence Seaway. That will be our starting point for the tour. We will ride the perimeter of the peninsula north of Maine and New Brunswick. Riding approximately 1,200 miles in 6 days. This is my first ever visit to Quebec and I plan to see the old Quebec City before I start the riding. It looks like it will be a new ... read more

The next morning was Saturday morning. Originally, had we been able to go to Land O' Lakes, WI, we were planning to attend the Frosty Snowmobile Club's Radar runs at Bent's Camp Resort on Mamie Lake west of LandO. One of the highlights of this event is the bikini run with girls wearing bikinis riding the high speed 1000' run on snowmobiles. They do it to raise money for breast cancer. We considered driving the 65 miles down there to see it, but since the trails there were now dirt and the trails up here are fantastic, we chose to stay up here and ride. We only received about 2-3 inches of snow, but the groomers were doing a heck of a job of churning up the snow and flattening out the trails, resulting in great ... read more

We awoke in the morning to 40-50 mph winds from the west, 20 degrees and snow. When we went to bed around 11:00, it was still over 40. The trees were swaying 20 feet at their tops. It was 8 AM and we had to pack for our move down the road to Krupp's, what with the Wyandotte having a 9 AM checkout. Kinda early, huh? We thought so, too. By the time we started loading up the truck, a truck and huge 6 place trailer pulled in by our cabin. These guys were ready to move in to our cabin. So we drove down to Krupp's and our cabin there wasn't ready yet, so we drove over to the Parkview to have breakfast. By now it was snowing hard and the winds were steady at ... read more

It barely got down to 32 overnight, but everything was a bit crispy. After such a warm day before, we knew we couldn't go too far south, so we decided to point the sleds north and squeezed the throttles. We headed up Trial 3, the Bill Nichols Trail, the super slab of snowmobile trails. 60 mph sustained speeds are easy to do on this great trail. Once again, the trail was groomed overnight and was very smooth. We rode up to Houghton about 25 miles north of Twin Lakes and crossed the bridge across the Portage Channel into Hancock. Once again, the temperature climbed into the 40's and it was a bright, sunny day. We chose to continue north on Trail 3 through Lake Linden and then toward the city of Calumet, where we gassed up ... read more

The forecast sure wasn't good for snowmobiling. We were at home in Illinois deciding whether to make a snowmobile trip to either Land O' Lakes, WI or go further north. The weather men were forecasting temps in the 40's in the Northwoods for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. With more snow on the ground as usual in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the UP we decided to try Twin Lakes as our destination. Those of you who have read this blog in the past know that I've been staying at Krupp's Resort in Twin Lakes for many years, so I called Sandy Krupp to try to rent one of their cabins. No luck, it's Presidents' day week and they were all booked up, but Sandy put me on the wait list for cancellations. We were on a wait ... read more

Last year in Cabo, we tried a little fishing for Marlin and Sailfish, which was a total bust, but that's to be expected in big game fishing. So, this time we booked a 1/2 day fishing charter with the goal of "action" fishing. We didn't care about really big fish, we just wanted to catch something since neither of us had done much fishing in our lives. We were hoping to catch something we could have cooked for our dinner at a restaurant. So we booked a relatively small boat, the Eagle Eye, a 26 foot boat, manned by Capt. Jim Perry. He was a real nice guy, except for the fact that he was a Cub fan. Growing up in Marathon, he watched the Cubs on WGN since he was a kid. He has my ... read more

Since we didn't get to fly in the seaplane, Jan wanted to do a bi-plane ride from the Marathon Airport. We've seen the sign several times in our travels. We booked a 45 minute flight that would show us several keys, the 7 Mile Bridge and the reef about 5 miles off shore. The airplane is a Waco with tandem seats in the front and a pilot's seat in the rear. It was pretty cool flying in an open cockpit airplane. These Wacos are aerobatic capable and were built in the 1930's in Battle Creek, MI. The weather was really nice for flying. Our pilot, Mark has about 3,000 hours flying time and is in a 2 year process of doing a rebuild on an old Waco he found. The Waco cruised along at about 110mph ... read more

When we were getting ready to leave Chicago, I told Jan that I didn't care if we did anything down here except lay around and relax. Well, we're doing plenty of that! The weather has been better than the 10 day forecasts were saying last week at home. It was in the high 80's Friday when we arrived and Saturday through Monday it was in the low 80's and SUNNY each day. As much as I love winter snow and snowmobiling, the one thing I hate and I guess we all hate in the northern climes during the winter is the abundance of gray overcast days. The sunny clear weather is a tonic for the soul. The forecast for Tuesday was for a cool day, with a high of 71, so we decided that would be ... read more
